I bought a new mountain bike from Walmart, huffy rock creek 29, just recently purchased new tires for it, Kenda sport nevegal 29 2 20, I ride at the trexler nature preserve in Allentown Pennsylvania and it takes everything, berms, jumps and more, a great hard tail.

Great review, agree with all the shortcomings. Got this for my 14yr old last March to see if mountain biking was something he'd be interested in, and I didn't want to spend $2k for an entry f/s bike at the LBS. Picked up a used Markhor fork ($100), DNM coil shock ($50) & MT200 hydraulic brakes ($50) and he's been good on local black diamond trails and even at the local bike park. Will be upgrading to a "real" bike this Christmas as he loves riding now. Which means the bike served its purpose.
@TheCrashingDad
@TheCrashingDad 3 жыл бұрын
THAT'S the way to do it 🤘🏼 I think with a form, shock, and brakes that actually work like normal...this bike could serve that purpose. Maybe grippier pedals, a dropper post, short stem, and wider bars would be good too...

But there is that one Walmart bike that tops them all, the Axum DP Hardtail $500 is no joke. (If you can get one they're being snatched) Of course any regular nice mountain bikes are modded, so it's fair with a couple mods they're a competitive true ripper! Definitely getting one. Thanks for the vid man, it was awesome, I was also thinking of a modding a cheap Walmart Dual Suspension indeed, had this in mind as one of the only options, not anymore lol.
@TheCrashingDad
@TheCrashingDad 3 жыл бұрын
@Hector Munoz yeah...it's a tough call on alot of bikes on whether or not to upgrade them. I'd say any bike that doesn't have thru-axles and a tapered headtube isn't worth upgrading. Hard to upgrade, and not very future proof.... Not to mention, not sturdy enough to handle the rigors of gnarly mtb 😬🤷🏼‍♂️ Just my opinion.. But definitely keepingy eye out for an Axum fort non-mtb friend
@Hector55Munoz
@Hector55Munoz 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCrashingDad Indeed, must look at the frame features to see if it's worth it, but hey the Axum is Aluminum, (unlike that one has a steel rear end) 67.8 aggressive head angle, tappered too. 32 teeth 1 by 8 drive.. I believe there is a way to get over the axle problem with those wheels, although I think they're double wall and of good quality on their own with 2.6 wide tires. It's like Walmart with Schwinn did us a favor in secret man :)

Used to dh race in the late 90s. Just got back in to riding after over 20 years and bought a $600 Felt 29er ht. It doesn't suck, its actually pretty good. Great frame, cheap Suntour coil forks are just as good as what I used to race on and the cheap x4 derailer shifts way better than anything I've ridden before. Even the cheap no name wheelset is actually pretty high quality. This bike and its components are better than the high end stuff I last rode on. Its perfectly capable and durable. We used to ride the same trails that you young guys think requires a $4000 bike with cushy long travel suspension on 26ers with 100mm coil suspension. Its all perspective.

Yeah, but bikes have come a LONG way in 25 years. I also got into MTB’ing in the mid/late nineties as a teen. They were still figuring out frame geometry and there were many differing and odd experimental layouts. Some worked better than others. Nowadays, most of the frames have almost identical angles because MTB’ers have pretty much agreed on what works and what doesn’t. Even the tires are much, much better. You’re not going to find many 29’ers with 2.8+ width on 90’s bikes and we didn’t know what we were missing. Tubeless tires and disk brakes? Unheard of. Oh, and Felt makes some great bikes, too, even on the low end . I own a FZ100 road bike and I love it.

I actually own this bike. Your review helped me make my decision on a budget bike. Let's remember, you just took a $300 bike on a double black diamond trail and even jumped it from a 5-8 foot drop off. Rims didn't even warp. A bike like this is perfect for a beginner trail rider. I've slowly upgraded mine. It's heavy, but very strong. Every upgrade makes it more capable. It'll be well worth it for a budget rider. I recommend it.

Wow 🤘🏼 that's awesome that you were able to make such a huge jump 😎I was on a $400 hardtail for a year and a half while I saved up for a $2500 aluminum full sus.. But I feel like that first year and a half taught me how to work on a bike that was always breaking (eventually totalling up to $1200 including repairs and upgrades)...and taught me how to ride. I was a much better rider once I had the full sus 🤷🏼‍♂️ Although, it's still my opinion that a Walmart bike is more prone to frustrate and turn people off of mtb 🤷🏼‍♂️

When I first bought a beginner bike (a 3x7) I found if I kept it in an easy gear the tension kept the chain in place. And then I bought an entire sx groupset for $325 off aliexpress and haven't dropped a chain since.
@TheCrashingDad
@TheCrashingDad 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point 🤔 I never dropped.a chain when I was climbing or in an easier gear...... It was only when I was going faster and in a harder gear...makes sense. Less chain tension. Unfortunately, that's exactly when we don't want to drop a chain 😂 And yeah...it's hard to justify upgrades to a bike that arguably doesn't deserve them ..😬

if you want some thing, slightly nicer, I have a Schwinn ascension. The deraileur has a clutch, it has a one-way drive train. Hey Mechanic buddy - I'm pretty sure most cable operated mechanical disc brakes bend come from one side to bend the rotor... Even Steve's prized Pauls Components brakes do it :D I'm not saying they don't seem sketchy (I have Tektro Mechs on my fatty and yea, they're not the best), but they are FAR better than rim brakes! Anyway, quality content, Crashing Dad!!

Wallmart has this bad habit of putting a abused bike back in stock….it’s anoying! And wallmart don’t like marking them down when I find one I like….they seem to only have that one in stock.
