Getting rid of cards with less perks shouldn't make that big of a difference. The credit limit on them are relatively low and it shouldn't affect credit utilization or your overall credit limit on all your debt that much. Credit cards are being handed out like candy to children in the US. It's their problem for not pre-emptively offering to upgrade your card to one of their better offerings if they have any. If you are a good customer with a particular big bank, you'll be getting junk mail from them offering you a better card from time to time. Especially if you have a lot of money tied up in their investment products or sitting in a bank account.
@ChimpRevolution5 жыл бұрын
@@MrAnonymousRandom it's not really the utilization that hurts you it's that a lot of the time these cards have a extra year of use when cancelled that is removed from your credit report which means it shows you as having credit for less time lowering the score

@@louib716 That's very cool that you use a cash back card for work very cool.
@MichaelMarvin5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how much personal travel you do. Yes, with points you are taking a little more risk betting your points won't be devalued, but absolute worst case scenario you redeem those points for a 1 cent a piece statement credit (which any reputable credit card offers). In this sense, you always essentially have a 1% cashback card. You also can generally get a lot more value out of many of these cards then comparable cahsback cards if you're studied on the points game and know how to properly leverage points. This is especially true for hotel cards which still offer standard reward redemptions based on tiers rather than dynamic pricing like airlines. As he says in the video, you start factoring two people into a hotel stay, let alone a family, and you are really getting a great return on your money. If you don't like to or prioritize travel, or you don't want to put the work into figuring out how to leverage points, then yes, chashback is probably the best option for you, but if you do like to travel and you don't mind studying up a bit on how best to use your points, then points cards are absolutely a better deal. Just depends on your lifestyle. Points cards are literally the only way I can afford to travel, and I highly value the couple Amex cards I hold which allow me this freedom.

Wish I knew about you & the tier breakdown two years ago. Started with my Wells Fargo student card four years ago. It got upgraded to the platinum card- No AF no perks. Then got the Best Buy VISA (needed a new laptop in college & couldn’t afford one in full-they had the 18 month interest free). Graduated & got the Macy’s AMEX for the store rewards points and at the time Plenti Rewards for gas & grocery. And then got the TJMaxx MasterCard for store rewards. Started watching your videos and decided that since I have 4 credit cards with no real perks to just apply for the AMEX Gold. So the AMEX Gold is my only “good perks” card and it’s a tier 3. Should I cancel the store branded cards (2k, 5k, & 7k credit limit on them)? Can I upgrade my WF platinum to the Propel (it has no AF and great perks & make it my tier 2)?
@Dudeee_5 жыл бұрын
Hi Allison! Regarding the propel card with Wells Fargo, yes you can call them and do a product change to go from platinum to the propel card. The propel offers really great perks. 3X points on almost everything with no annual fee or foreign transaction fees! It’s a really great card to have. And it has a good sign up bonus too! 30,000 points if you spend 3,000 in the first 3 months.
@renshawjoshua5 жыл бұрын
Never close accounts in good standing. Regardless of you never use the card; it is still giving you higher AAoA, higher total credit available toward your utilization, and continuous on-time payments to leverage against possible credit difficulties that may arise in the future if you experience financial trouble. The only reason to ever cancel a card is if it is associated with an annual fee you don’t feel like paying any longer; and even then you have to weigh the negative consequences of doing so.
@renshawjoshua5 жыл бұрын
Dudeee_ Just a by the way; typically credit issuers do not offer “sign up bonuses” if you are upgrading a card. They are bonuses meant to entice new customers to “sign up” (it’s in the name of the bonus). Some issuers may still offer the sign up bonus on upgrade, but the overwhelming majority do not. Contact your issuer and double-check prior to making the switch.

Deathnote819 You are partially very incorrect/ don’t know the reasoning behind it Buisness Cards are not factored into or add to your 524 , only because Buisness cards do not get reported to your personal credit report., when and if you get them...... However. The fact that and if you are already sitting at 524 as reflected by your personal credit report , IS VERY MUCH locked at when chase is considering you for an ink card. Given this information, It’s better to first apply for biz cards when first starting out, with huge exception of capital one biz cards. ( not a good strategy at all , as you WILL NOT be approved for a biz card when first starting out). Or , the more sensible route is to fit in and try for a chase biz card app , a few years down the line, in between one of your personal applications ....again though , making sure though that you are below 524 at the time of the application..... otherwise you’ll almost certainly get denied......

Question: if I'm denied on an application for an Amex card, will it hinder my approval odds on a card issued from another company/bank on their network (i.e. Macy's American Express)?
@DustinEvans19665 жыл бұрын
I’m sure most people that are into credit cards know this. But for beginners watching videos like this. Hopefully you got your chase cards first. But once you have your chase cards. Especially the chase branded ones like freedom, CSR,CSP or any chase branded business cards. Don’t get rid of them. They are the only cards I’ve ever had and never have closed. If the annual fee is to much. Chase allows you to upgrade or downgrade. So say you have a chase sapphire reserve. And you don’t want to pay the fee. Don’t cancel it. Just downgrade it to a no fee freedom. Then you have the ability to upgrade back up to the regular chase sapphire preferred or reserve in the future. As for myself. I would not say I’m super into the credit card points like some people I know. But I’ve never been under 5/24 since I started almost 7 years ago. Also unless you are a big spender on chase cards. Don’t call them and play the “ I don’t want to pay the annual fee game”. I’ve found them to not be as generous with this as say Amex or citi is.

I have a question. Can I pay off the amount I owe without having to wait for statement up update? Like pay it off right away or should I wait until closer to due date to pay it off?
@BlackestNightVideos5 жыл бұрын
Nemo Nobody you can pay it off whenever you want. Just make sure after you pay it for the month don’t use it until the new billing cycle begins. Example I have a capital one card and my bill is due on the 10th every month. They send statements about once a month but I never mail in a payment I always pay the balance through the capital one app on my phone. I usually pay my bill a few days before the due date.

@MichaelMarvin5 жыл бұрын
You raise a really good point. I don't know about other companies, but Amex waives fees for all active duty personal on all their cards, including the $550 a year Platinum. You should absolutely shoot for that highest tier card if you have a good history and are planing to stay with the military for awhile. Open all the top tier cards and enjoy the benefits without paying for them. Even if you plan to go inactive, you can always downgrade your product to something more reasonable afterwards.

You only have 13? Also why the Cap One Plat as a first card instead of the Discover It? It fits squarely into tier 2 and from what I understand doesn't require any credit history. It was the last card I went for in my app spree, I got 13 personal cards (plus a business card) in under a year, and I still was approved for $5k. For reference, the app before that was the PayPal Cash Back MasterCard and I was only approved for $300. I made sure to apply for higher priority cards that were more likely to be declined earlier and saved the easier ones for last.

@TomsLife95 жыл бұрын
it depends on what you're looking to do with rewards or building points but there is a loose rule that Chase will deny your credit card application automatically if you have opened 5 credit cards within the last 2 years, so that is probably a good rule of thumb to apply among all credit applications, not just Chase.
@renshawjoshua5 жыл бұрын
If you are new to building credit; you want to apply for as many cards as possible as you can keep up with satisfying the introductory bonuses for. When I began to work on my credit in earnest; I got approved for 8 cards within the same 24 hour period. 3 chase cards on the same day (Freedom, slate, and CSP). I had a credit score of 620 and only two cards prior (Capital one platinum and target). 7 years later I have 802 TU / 804 EQ / 798 EX and 17 cards (21 accounts total). Hit them hard and hit them fast. You want to get the clock rolling on AAoA ASAP. You want to maximize your available credit so utilization will remain low. You want those inquires now so they begin to fall off sooner. Don’t be afraid of getting declined. Call up their reconsideration department and talk to them. Getting declined does not lower your credit score except for the hard inquiry. The difference between 5 inquires and 10 inquires is literally a matter of a couple points. Go nuts. Don’t wait until later in life to work on your credit. You’d be surprised how easily credit card companies will extend credit to somebody in their 20s with a decent score and income; until you realize these credit card companies are licking their chops hoping they just got another customer about to have 40+ years of earnings to make they are hoping to get you into debt and take in the interest over that time. Remain vigilant and treat your credit responsibly, and the sky is the limit at what you can reach.
