Funny thing about wanting ciri as the lead all they needed was to put in the work and put a good show. If they could get to where ciri is grown up like in the games ,they could have strong lead Ciri base on the game version
@VAWM. Жыл бұрын
Ciri is basically the lead in the books though. Yeah, the early short story collections focus on Geralt (and they're also my favourite Witcher stories) but once you move into the main series with Blood of Elves, the books are pretty conclusively about Ciri. She and Geralt end up on opposite sides of the world and the story largely focuses on her struggles, powers and rivalries from that point on. Geralt is still a major part of the books, and the interactions between him and his adventuring party are Sapkowski's best writing in the series imho, but I think it's wrong to say the books are definitively about him at that point.

Amazon has done a number on a few 'how can they possibly fuck this up? - ohhhh, like that' IPs (Wheel of Time and LotR). Really need to hope lessons have been learned, but the doubling down of the 'we know best' attitude of these showrunner types this new witcher shit feels like it represents doesnt make me feel hugely optimistic.

I know nothing of Warhammer but the fact that Cavil is not just in the show but is a producer and he's genuinely passionate about the source material makes me want to try it. It could honestly be the first adaptation in the last 10 years where the show runners actually give a shit (besides Dune). Here's hoping the rest of the producers don't coordinate against Cavil because if the show is good, it will also show what fans have been saying for years that you can only make a successful adaptation IF YOU RESPECT THE SOURCE MATERIAL.

I'd just like to add that since Henry is clearly a bit fan of the books and games, and that a former writer of the netflix series admitted in a recent interview that several of his co-writers openly showed their hatred and mockery of the source material just supports my theory that at least one of the reasons Henry left was because he did not want to be a part of his butchery of something that he loves any longer. Mr. Cavill, I tip my hat to you, and I wish you nothing but the best going forward.

Such a fair point. You know for all the shit talked about the Witcher, I kept my head down & followed Geralt's story, & I enjoyed it. If i looked around too much or too deep into other characters, well that's not my point. Mad respect to Mr. Cavill, an actor who, like the greats (Pacino, Di Nero, 90% of the original Lord Of The Rings cast & 97% of the original Star Wars, & hell Star Trek TNG) cared about their characters & treated them as entities who deserve respect, actually found a way to enjoy the Witcher. I tried, I really did, to enjoy Blood Origin, Christ my phone had an alarm set for when it came out. But the acting was so over the top or stunted. 1 of my biggest cringe parts was b4 the made the 1st Witcher, stone fart & Lady Lark pretending to be sexually attracted to each other when they "kissed" there was a sound I heard, a romantic/charismatic black hole opening up in the space/time continuum. Anyways, we'll be ok. Maybe these are all learning sessions for future writers, Gods Please, Make It So. Peace fellow human...

Can we have our own characters please? I’m an old ass Caribbean woman and I fucking love the Witcher books in all their Slavic glory and the games for bringing my favorite characters to life. The books are unique for their complex and deeply flawed female characters and remain a testament to the lasting impact of the women who helped rebuild Poland after the war. Their influence is all over those books. It’s also refreshing to see a stoic, strong yet genuinely good male character with depth and charisma. I crave seeing people that look like me and my family in more entertainment but we deserve our own stories and the fans of these stories want to celebrate what makes them uniquely Polish. This pandering is basically corporate trolling as a marketing ploy and unfairly makes these actors take the brunt of manufactured rage for no good reason than free publicity.

Back then I thought that it looked cheesy, but now I think it was the most faithful and so far the best Witcher adaptation. Just because it says production is made by Americans and has big names ( Although I think Henry Cavil was the best actor of modern series along with Jaskier, Ciri and Yennefer), does not mean good quality. What I liked about the Polish production, is that I felt immersed in the world the series has portrayed. And the Jaskier songs (voiced by Zbigniew Zamachowski) were fantastic. I think anyway that short stories and novellas from early Sapkowski work are his best works, and maybe the first novel. Did it feel annoying? no. Was it the characters' only personality trait? no. That's because the story was great, and the characters were so well-written. This's spot on, plus GOT's writters didn't fulfill the need to get any representative character a "I'm the best" screen time, even to the point any distinctive character arc isn't to be found. . For example (as much spoiler-free as possible) Renly isn't interesting because he just kills every characters in his way with the left hand, while the right one is busy opening a Pepsy can then putting in to his mouth. He is interesting because...of the way he behaves, and specifically the way he interacts with other characters. . You could have ethnically distinct countries, with a sprinkling of other races, from other areas, traders and whatever, but if you must have a diverse cast all in one place, here's a thought, why not have lots of the story set in port cities, or crossroads on trade routes, where the different races converge. Which usually makes for a interesting setting, for deceits, double crosses and heroism, and shady dealing in back street bars. Istanbul sort of thing, I'm not a writer or anything, but you know, it just might work visually and plot wise.

When I was older I read all books and I fell in love with world created by Sapkowski. I remember first time when I play the first game it was a wonderfull experience for me, I use to weke up every morning and play this game, I waited for the second and third game like hell. When I was older and my mental helth was bad (I had depression), I used to get in my car and ride to the woods. I spend houres in wild reading this series, and this story helped my get through worst time of my life. Hell, I even nemed my dauther Cirilla. I wrote my batchlor about the Slavic coulture in Witcher, I have tattoos inspired by Witcher, I train sword fight. So you can see how much this series has inpact on my life, and now when I watch this shit, I feel ofended and in some way betrayed. This Netflix crap shoudn't by called Witcher, becouse this has nothing common witch the Witcher. It's punch to face to the Slavic coulture and spit in the face of fans not only here in Poland, but all over the world. In my opinion, the foremost problem with these new fantasy and so called "historical" movies and tv shows is the determined imposition of modern Anglo-American cultural norms and values into the societies of worlds that have nothing in common with the modern human civilization. The language, behaviors and mentality that is depicted within these new fantasy shows is a product of a modern cosmopolitan elitist (priviliged Hollywood upper class) experience of reality rather than being derived from an understanding of the historical record and the profound cultural differences that have existed between various societies.

100%, and unfortunately it's not just movies. As an avid reader, it blows my mind how often modern fantasy stories don't seem to understand this. The entire point of fantasy (and sci-fi) is to be taken on an adventure to a time and place outside contemporary realities. And to experience all of the trials that environment places on the characters. Instead, today's fiction author's vision of fantasy seems to be some retarded variation of a popular MMO they played in their youth, where the culture is a lazy facade filled with quest-giving NPCs. "Character progression" just a stat improvement on a skill sheet, and the harsher realities of medieval civilization presented only as tropes the author uses to virtual-signal their own post-modern viewpoints on.

One thing that I love when it comes to fantasy and sci fi universes is a well-realised and believable world where it feels like there’s already been centuries of events that have taken place before the story has ever begun. World building is an important facet of storytelling as it can easily destroy the story, the plot and every character in it all if somebody either forgets how an economy works or what it would be like to travel over a hundred miles on feet.
@matthewmosier84392 жыл бұрын

@JustinStrife2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewmosier8439 It's scary how spot on your comment is.
@ryang25732 жыл бұрын
I disagree. World building is important but it's secondary to a good plot. Granted, if there's poor world building, everything else must be that much better to compensate for it if you want people to like your work of fiction. But it's not THE biggest factor and a LOT can be overlooked if everything else shines. I like to use the original three Star Wars movies as an example. If you critically examine the feasibility of something like the Death Star, or whether a bunch of stone age walking teddy bears would really prove that much of a hindrance to a galaxy-spanning Empire, you can rule it all as absurd very quickly. But most people overlook those things because they're invested in the story's characters and want to see them succeed in spite of the odds stacked against them. The Witcher fails on BOTH accounts though. There was not a single character shown that I cared about and the lore behind events was a muddled mess. Things appeared to happen with no rhyme or reason behind them, nobody's motivations were clear or understandable, and overall everything had this "generic fantasy" vibe to it with little to distinguish it from the countless thousands of other stories just like it.

In terms of the “diversity” you mentioned in every geographical area, they did the same thing with The Wheel of Time. In the first episode they are in The Two Rivers, which is a majorly secluded area which rarely gets visitors and the area has an ancient history. The book even describes what a Two Rivers person looks like and describes how weird it is that one of them looks different. It’s a major plot point in the book, because obviously this character did not originally hail from the Two Rivers. However, in the show it’s just a “diverse” hodgepodge. It literally made 0 sense.

We want psychologically fleshed-out characters, realistic physics, consistent non-physics (magic) mechanics, and a captivating scene rhythm. Everything else is a bonus: good graphics and effects, pretty people, battle choreography, music, costumes, and even above average acting, Id say. Sometimes you can get away with mediocre acting and not ruin the immersion. We don't care about the color of anyone's skin, as long as it's the skin the source material describes. And if it doesn't, and it's a good fit for it, you can make them green for all we care. This is literally the formula. Its that simple. And in a world where the movie industry is so powerful and wealthy this is trivial to make. I know people that can make computer algorithms that can write book adaptations with such parameters and spit them out daily. But Hollywood can't be bothered.

You don't have to show it to a pub full o Witcher fans in Poland, I assure you that's what we all were doing during Christmas and it was wild. In the first episode, I had to keep reminding myself that those burly bearded guys with Scottish accents are elves, not dwarfs. I also love how a bearded, Viking-looking guy (at first I thought that he is the human in that scene) at the end sees a human woman for the first time and has no idea what she is, even though the only difference between them is the shape of their ears, which wouldn't be able to see from that distance. You know, why spend time and money on design and showing the audience that they're different races when you can just shout at them instead? And I also like the point about the 1000-year war. When I was in college, I had to write a short sci-fi story for the final exam in my creative writing class, and I put there a throw-away line about two races being at war for a thousand years and the professor a bit sarcastically pointed out to me that that's a bit long time to be at war. Boy oh boy, if she only knew that people are paid good money by Netflix for writing shit like that. The dialogues were great too - I like how in one episode the guy with cleavers says that terribly cheesy line about thinking that he was done with killing, but the killing wasn't done with him, and the writers must have really loved it and thought it was the greatest line since Clint Eastwood's "Go ahead, make my day", because the narrator uses the same phrase about the dwarf girl and the elves ten minutes later. Speaking of, I love how they allude to slavery in the real world by adding the line about elves being responsible for their ancestors' crimes against the dwarves. White guilt much? Also, I wonder how many reshoots there were since that bug monster from episode 3 looked pretty good, but the main beast seemed like something taken out of Dinotopia. Or maybe they just wanted to honor the infamous golden dragon from the Polish version of the Witcher from 2001.

Honestly the "thousand years war" is not so far-fetched. Reconquista is counted as a singular war, that lasted 781. Not that far from 1000. That said, it's more like series of conflicts. As which, 1000 years war is quite possible. Also, a war doesn't have to actively consist of military actions and constant killing and destroying. For example North and South Korea are at war since 1945. The war is at total standstill (as far as I know), and you'll only experience it by high military security at the border. Being anywhere else in South Korea you'd think the country is at peace. While there are peace talks going on, it would be possible to create plausible conflict that would go on for thousand(s) of years with little to no battle. Especially in fantasy/sci-fi setting where creatures might live very long, or distances might be absurd, or other factors are at play. With all that said I'm not protecting the Blood Origin series. The war presented there is just plain stupid. Someone just wrote 1000 because it "sounded cool", without considering practical implications as above.

My favorite example at the moment is the latest Dune movie. Everyone who read the books knew this would be a tremendous undertaking, near impossible, but denis villeneuve manage to capture the FEELING of the books in a way only a fan could while still telling a story that was essentially the same as the books. He didn't need to be 100% faithful to the story because what he had accomplished was incredible enough.

To an extent, huge fans might also be blinded by their fandom and fail to realize what needs to be cut, edited, or changed through an adaptation. However, I would much rather have a showrunner be a fan than totally ignorant, or downright spiteful, of what they're working with.

What every studio really needs to do is make sure that they are hiring people who understand the source material and will respect it.

@@CatCraine It depends. True huge fans will learn about the world to the point that the world is their reference point. Look at the LotR trilogy, where they all agreed the point was to provide the best adaptation to film as possible, not a retelling or inspired by situation. That wasn't possible in Hobbit because if WB big wigs interfering, but it made money anyway and as far as I'm concerned that gave tacit permission to studios to throw integrity out in favor of broad mass appeal... or at least what the directors believe means mass appeal...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the witcher world completely devoid of magic until the Conjuction of Spheres brought it there along with monsters and Humans? So how can a sorcerer even exist prior to the conjuction and cause it? So what is it: Are they making a ridiculously predictable "twist" that this isn't the world of The Witcher, but the world from which the Wild Hunt comes from, or are they once again ignoring the established lore for their own convenience? Either way sucks...
@Modie2 жыл бұрын
They are just not even interested in their own lore. They basically made up that there is "magic" and "chaos magic" which is supposed to be stronger somehow and comes from another world. Which is weird because in the actual series they only ever talk about "chaos magic" but there is literally no difference aside from "fire".
@Kamo4422 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking. I thought the non-humans and monsters went to the human world during some event. (I can't really remember its been awhile since I looked at witcher lore)
@Modie2 жыл бұрын
@@Kamo442 I mean they are right in the idea that humans came to the world of elves and dwarfs. That's why they are called "Elder races" because they lived there before. Monsters also came TO the world (which makes sense because they just cross). Though it isn't said that there were NO monsters before since you could argue whats the difference between monster and animal? I am not sure anymore if the books also said that this conjunction introduced magic to the world in general or just to humans (since I guess the idea is that these humans came from our world). I feel like both interpretations would be fair. Just stick with one and don't mix them up like they did in the show. Only other important point is that elves from the Witcher world also traveled to another world which are then the Aen Elle
@DonPatrono2 жыл бұрын
You also forgot to mention the part where Witchers were created from human kids that were experimented on for years and years first by the wizards from the Rissberg order and then by the expert mutagenists Idarran, Malaspina and Alazur, all a long time AFTER the conjunction of the spheres....whereas in this shitshow the first "witcher" is an elf that drank a reinforced mojito and then did the oompa loompa bdsm dance with some monster entrails
@RoboRoby3212 жыл бұрын
Haha good joke thinking the writers even know what the conjunction is, or how magic appeared. They know it's a medieval fantasy product so go to their Hollywood definition of medieval fantasy and just use that info, they don't care about little things like franchise lore

I feel really bad for Henry cavill. This whole series could have been so great and something he could have been really proud of. I hope he’s at least proud of his personal performance cuz he really did do an outstanding job. It turned me into a Henry cavill fan as I’ve never seen any of his other stuff, but now I think I’ll finally give Superman a try. I thoroughly enjoyed the Witcher season 1, not knowing anything about the lore. But season 1 in my opinion was pretty good, even though Witcher fans had issues with it. Season 2 was an absolute punch in the gut and I was so confused about how bad it was. It barely had their one shining star involved in any scenes! Wth?! I won’t be watching the Witcher anymore and I hope cavill can get his chance to be excellent again in something more worthy of his talent and enthusiasm.

Multiple side quests in Witcher 3'll blow your mind with their writing and the complexity of your decisions. There are far better games than Witcher 3 in terms of gameplay, RPG mechanics, graphics, etc. But Witcher 3 has countless characters and lore that'll engulf you in its vast, beautiful, majestic world that barely any other game can. Witcher games and the books gave these showrunners everything on a platter, but they somehow made the worst possible thing out of it. It's actually impressive how talentless they are.
