While it might not have been the all-action extraveganza promised in the trailers, and definitely not one of Guy Ritchie's better films, Ministry was still a decent WW2 adventure movie. But could have been so much more.

I honestly feel like this one didn’t deserve the gaze of this channel. Movies don’t have to be ground breaking to be good. This was a perfectly fun classic feeling summer action movie, that wasn’t pushing any nonsense, had tough guys being tough and bad guys being bad and was a thoroughly entertaining and violent romp that felt at home with classic WW2 action films like the dirty dozen, guns of navarone, or Kelly’s heroes. Movies don’t have to reinvent the genre they exist in, sometimes it’s fun to just get something that’s what you paid for

The reason I think it fell short of being as good as Inglourious Basterds is due to the fact we’re never really shown the villains as serious threats. We see the Nazis succeed twice against people we are led to believe won’t bend to them: Hans Landa in the opening scene with the farmer and later the Nazi who calls Michael Fassbender’s bluff at the bar after just the slightest of mistakes. In Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare it felt like they were playing on easy mode.

I find the ideal movie would be a balance between the two, despite Brad Pitt's speech in IB there was a distinct lack of 'killin nazees' until the very very end. Gonna go with my man Steven Spielberg, he struck a great balance between Ze Germans as a threat but also actually show them being vanquished. They were cartoony but at least Indy had to run from them. The problem with a commando raid is the nature of a raid by the allies is it naturally puts the heroes on the offensive from the start. Maybe there should have been something where they're immediately put on the backfoot like ending up in a duel with a U-boat where their ship is sunk and swim to shore with little weaponry. IDK how precisely to do it, you want a rampage but you have to earn it. Even Rambo was on the backfoot before striking back.

Why the hell do the major international movies always cast Til Schweiger? The guy does not have a good calling anymore here in Germany and we got some much better actors. I am pretty sure Jürgen Vogel could pull of a scary and crazy Nazi boss, just checked and he did already. But I guess nobody else wanted the job (german actor for nazi role, again) and Schweiger takes anything that makes money. Also you would have to play against Waltz' Landa-Benchmark. I'm an old woman. My son watches all the clips from the Drinker and all those other young fellows who should be outside in the fresh air more, and I find them quite amusing, even though my son has to translate for me from time to time as I don't speak CGI. We saw the trailer for this movie and had hopes that here was at last a movie it would be fun to see. It led my son to explore the book this movie came from--"Churchill's Secret Warriors", and the more he compared them, the more he felt disappointed in the coming movie. That book was so full of dramatic attacks and rescues--all absolutely true--that five movies could have been made from that one book. The side story of the exotic-looking lady and her colleagues never had to be inserted. It took up space that could have been used for so much more. There is a whole series of books on the subject, moving through the history of Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, written by Damien Lewis. I urge everyone here to read those books, especially the Brits amongst us. It will buck you up during the weirdness happening over there now, and you will be asking yourselves, "What ever happened to THAT kind of Brit?" It might give people ideas, and stiffen some spines. We need to do the same here in the US, as everything some mocked the Brits for tolerating before, is starting to happen here, and we're not fighting it either.

I think the problem for me is the spy mission with Nazi’s side of the story kept me expecting a betrayal of some kind that never quite came. They kept pointing out all these surprises such as the number of Nazi’s on the island, reinforced ship, etc that I was waiting for Heron to end up being a traitor intentionally feeding misinformation. Maybe with Appleyard’s help. But when that never comes, it makes the emphasis on the island seem infinitely less essential to the actual story and has me wishing we got more time with Cavill’s crew.

It's almost as if her entire role in the script was tacked on later to what was originally just a "boy's own" commando raid. Not surprised they're terrified of ever showing a female character in truly a bad light without also letting her have the last word about how sorry she is and the person she hurt the most was herself. I can see how Guy Ritchie would feel he was in no position to stand being second guessed over showing the girlboss as a traitor, or even being suspected of being a traitor. She has to be perfect.
@AmericanRollo
@AmericanRollo Ай бұрын
@@Treblaine Fact is her entire arc is essentially fabricated. While she did run missions with women, she was never there. Guy says this was a way to honor her in the film, but it absolutely made a lot of the film feel like studio mandating a female led side quest after initial viewings. Not even saying that’s what happened here, just how it felt in the film
@Treblaine
@Treblaine Ай бұрын
@@AmericanRollo It's easy to second guess after the fact (so I claim no great wisdom) but if you're going to add a fictional female character why not add one that's a bit more down to earth for balance against these larger-than-life commandos? Someone like a nurse or a mechanic who was swept along in the adventure but has a personal stake, like they lost a loved one in a U-boat sinking. I think on balance people appreciate a more emotionally open female character. But having her be the cold blooded badass just like the boys protects the movie from allegations of sexism.

I read the book this movie is based on last year. It wasn’t focused on one mission, but many years of ingenuity and bravery by people who were dragged into a war with few options but to leave behind the “honorable English warfare” ideal of the past and embrace trickery and cleverness to defeat Germany. Without about a half dozen of these folks inventing new weapons and offensive strategies, we probably would have lost the war. If you like non-fiction, check it out.

We appreciate your honest assessment. It's sad when the elements are all there to deliver greatness but then fall short. I saw it in theaters on 4/20 (A certain person’s birthday) after being at the gun range shooting a lot of WWII weapons, perhaps it was just the lingering excitement from that but I honestly enjoyed the movie. The criticisms are valid and there’s certainly points where things aren’t great, but I found it easy to just have fun with. Like the supply ship doesn’t look remotely like the real vessel, but then again there aren’t many 80 year old freighters around today, partially because of the damn U-Boats. But it’s a real freighter, and the HMS Violet, a violet is a flower, the ship should have been a flower class like the HCMS Sackville. They used HMS Belfast, but hey it’s a real WWII vintage ship so I’ll take it, the U-Boat looks like the one they keep in Malta from U-571, so it looked pretty good. Overall I guess I was just so prepared for crappy CGI that looks terrible that the authentic feeling sets were enough to placate me. Long and short I’d say go see it but treat it like if someone made a movie about a Sniper Elite mission.

Now that youve said it, Cavill would be awesome for the Bond role.

My favorite genre is HIstorical Fiction, but I think WW2 has been done to death. I want to see a Korean war movie done well, but considering China owns the west now, doubt I will see that. As an aside I saw an recent South Korean movie taking place during the Korean War with Liam Neeson as General McAurthur. The plot was mostly the Chinese counter attack that drove the allies back, and a band of fighters that stayed in Seoul in order to by time for the retreating forces. Not sure if it was a true story but it was badass.

@@Halfort57 I think “defeating the wrong guys” is relatively self-explanatory. “Brother war” is a way that European infighting is sometimes described. Look into Churchhill’s benefactors and associates-bloodthirsty and resentful figures who took advantage of his hatred of Germany.

Seriously. The most laughable line was when the woman said Hitler hates the jews because he was jealous of their ability to survive. Sounds like projection to me.

This is so true lol! I am really tired of these kinds of films. It all got so repetitive. I don't know why people won't explore other stories. It's not like Jews were the only people that suffered in history. We can make other historical revenge stories.

@@hamzablackfyre3741 Let me tell you a big secret. Jews weren´t the only people to suffer in history but they are the only ones ruling the deep state right now. So what do you think, do they let others take their spotlight, hmm? :)
