Disagree with that. I think in the back of his mind, Carlo knew he was more than likely a dead man. He hoped he wouldn't be found out as a traitor, but he really didn't have anyplace to go that wouldn't further solidify his status as a traitor....so he hoped like crazy that he could be forgiven against his own gut feeling that he really couldn't be forgiven. That was what made Carlo sit tight and take the bait.

Michael and even Tom Hagen managed to use multiple Laws of Power. Here are some of the main ones: Law 21: Play a sucker to catch a sucker - Seem dumber than your mark. Judgement: No one likes feeling stupider than the next person. The trick, then, is to make your victims feel smart-and not just smart, but smarter than you are. Once convinced of this, they will never suspect that you may have ulterior motives. Law 35: Master the Art of Timing Which states: Never seem to be in a hurry-hurrying betrays a lack of control over yourself, and over time. Always seem patient, as if you know that everything will come to you eventually. Become a detective of the right moment; sniff out the spirit of the times, the trends that will carry you to power. Learn to stand back when the time is not yet ripe, and to strike fiercely when it has reached fruition. and a few more "hidden" ones scattered throughout the video...

Excellent analysis. Of course it was obvious that it was Carlo who had Santino set up, but they way Don Vito and Don Michael played him until the time comes (too bad Don Vito had passed), it was really machiavellian. I would like to suggest you, to make a big analysis on Don Carmine Luppertazi Jr and how he used the "Laws of Power", in order to pretend the weak & fool, but ended up eliminating two bosses (Don Phil and Tony) and taking over everything. If you rewatch carefully the "Meeting of Minds", the "Last Sit-Down" and even the first scene Carmine appears with Johnny Sack and his father, you 'll see, that it was Carmine all along!!! Hope you 'll find it interesting and make it soon!!! Thank you in advance

Who was Carlo dialing on the phone when Michael walked in? Someone posted earlier on one of these podcasts- Carlo was calling his mistress to tell her he wouldn’t be coming over and would be delayed.
@bradjohnson4825 ай бұрын
Yes, in the book he was talking to one of his girlfriends. He was right about not coming over.

You think there’s any significance in the fact that when the situation that led to Sonny’s death happened his mistress called and said she wouldn’t be able to make it and then when it was Carlos turn He instead called the mistress saying he wouldn’t be able to make it I feel like there something to that

But when you think about it, the family would have looked much better had 1) Sonny been wise enough not to associate with Carlo, 2) The family ensured not to put Carlo in a position where he'd be capable of hurting the family...Maybe try to encourage Connie Corleone to find someone who isn't so untrustworthy and ambitious? Maybe you don't put someone like Carlo in a position where he has so little importance that he'll consider betrayal as a potential good decision, yet important enough to be able to betray the family in a way that ends up costing Sonny's life. I know that this is incredibly easy to say in hindsight, but it's equally as easy to pretend that everything that happens in the movie is the result of brilliant plans by the Corleone family...I mean, yes the movies are in large part about Vito and Michael's plans, but the very reason why they have to make those plans are because they ended up tough situations that they hadn't perfectly anticipated. Obviously you can't always control what your enemies are going to do, it doesn't mean the Corleones are weak or stupid, it, I just think that, while the plans that we see take place on screen may seem to be brilliant and very well coordinated, we shouldn't forget about the bad planning or lack of planning that led them in such situations to begin with. Maybe they aren't such absolute masters of the "rules of power" and such...Now let's be clear, I'm not saying that these aren't amazing movies :p.

Michael Corleone controlled his emotions perfectly. He listened patiently and carefully planned his moves. Nobody could know if he was angry or happy. You could easily assume that you had fooled Michael and not know he was watching you very carefully. Michael would have been told about how Carlo bashed his wife around and how Sonny bashed Carlo almost to death. So Michael knew that Carlo had the motive to hit back at Sonny. All Michael had to do was to pretend he did not care or know about how Sonny was murdered. Michael just needed some proof that Carlo was a traitor. Once Michael knew Carlo was a traitor he nailed him such that Carlo could not escape his fate. Michael had absolute control over his emotions but was also very smart.

The fact that Sonny didn't totally beat Carlo within an inch of his life was seen as a sign of weakness by the other families.
@mohammedfarid91612 ай бұрын
That's a possibility as the Italian culture especially the Italian mob culture could have deemed it as a weakness or something intolerable I guess!!

It's a sign of weakness but not in the way you think. Sonny revealed his temper is his weakness and unfortunately, this resulted in his doom.

When you shut up and watch. You gather intel. Knowledge is power. Michael , Tom and Vito knew this. Sonny was only brilliant when he was levelheaded. His kryptonite is his temper. He couldnt think straight. Hes dangerous. Men like that are easily controllable.

Carlo had already shown severe disrespect towards Don Corleone by his treatment towards Connie, of course he'd be a traitor to the family in other ways. This would be obvious to any mobster with half a brain for the game

They kept showing Hyman Roth on here; Michael did play somewhat dumb with him, but Roth was no fool and knew how to play the game even better with the Rosatto brothers incident and the attempt on Michael’s life and Michael’s attempt on Roth’s life.

@6:15 Giving Connie a hard time? Connie was a brat that didn't know her place. Sonny was a fool coming between a man and his wife. His mom warned him not to interfere. Knowing Sonny had her back made her more insubordinate and disrespectful. The Godfather never interfered. She shouldn't have called Sonny. Sonny cheated on his wife and she accepted it. Connie refused to accept it from Carlo.

People like you are so fucking stupid. None of that mattered in terms of the family. There are deeper things at play, even to the point of discounting cheating on spouses. You have to understand this kind of family and its relationships. People like you are about as deep as a puddle on the counter. Morons.

As much as our host has laid out his explanation, Carlo could have succeeded. The book and movie relied on a cheap trick, a convenient way to move the story along. Michael did not have proof. He assumed, but until Carlo flinched, he did not know.
