6:11 I've worked for 8 years in Finance so it's not some fresh grad speaking. While it's true bosses hire people to help them, employees employers relationship is a transactional relationship at the start. What employee gives in exchange for what employer gives. Ask the employee what they seek also. Employers should not promise training/guidance to potential hirees if they don't have the resources in place to help these new people. Remember this: If the people you hire often misses your expectations, maybe realise this. The talented people you hope for don't actually want to join your company so this is the best you can get. Talented employees in demand have options. If you want to be an attractive employer, you need to also provide learning opportunities and guidance for new people.

As a 4th year architectural designer, I can totally relate to the struggles of the architectural industry. The false glorification of the profession has disguised the struggles and unnatural working hours. I will never encourage anyone to join this industry even though I've dreamt of being an architect since primary 3. Life is so much more than work, and if you are stuck in the office till 10pm every night, life's just gonna fly by and leave you in the dust.

I feel a bit of an imposter syndrome here with the kind words from the comments section. I've also many times let my colleagues down despite my efforts. So I just wanna say that everyone even your boss is fighting their own battles in proportion to their plates especially in these tough times. So be kind! And thanks for the love! ❤️

Bosses also need to learn to be bosses. Clear lines need to be drawn. A harsh demanding boss but who is very clear is better than one who is always on middle ground, "neither here nor there" and you don't know what to expect.

Can I just say that I really enjoy your podcast! The topics are relatable, thought provoking and educational too. The chemistry within the team is good, and I like how y’all delve deep into the topics instead of skimming them through superficially. Thanks for these honest perspectives you bring to the table, it’s refreshing 😌 great job you guys! also wanted to suggest if y’all could link the articles that you give reference to in case anyone is curious to read more

John describing his experience reminded me of when I got stuck as the leader on a project w my friends! I wanted to be nice/ liked so I did everything to make my team members comfortable and ended up pulling almost all the weight on the project but most of the time people will find fault with you in the end and gossip about you (even the slackers). It is a thankless job and I think the person he hired probably felt shitty about his/her own work ability and needed someone to blame too.

Interesting that you guys brought up about the disparity a Singapore felt working in a French company and the lack of opportunities he / she faced being an Asian in a French company. I think if you were to look internally into many local companies - we, the minorities face the same when we work in a company where the majority of the employees are of the majority race. And not forgetting, the many job postings that we see that states that "Mandarin speaking preferred" when it is not a job necessity.

My daughter cut her teeth as a content producer by interning as a PA. She cried everyday but I told her that if she couldn't put herself in the director's shoes and his/her position of creative stress and time crunch, she needed to reconsider if it was her calling. After three months, she became a sought-after PA.

3:52 so true lol can relate! Blame game keeps pushing around! Especially companies who follow hierarchy a lot especially in finance, it’s difficult to get things done. On the contrary, flatter hierarchy has its cons too. Love this podcast! Can listen to yall all day! Keep it up!

The essential problem in Singapore is that we are transiting from a production economy into a knowledge economy. Hard work is the strength of Singapore but we have maxed how much we can gain from just working hard. The marginal gain from every additional hour of work is very low or non-existant. Yet many Singaporean companies still use working harder and harder instead of working smarter and smarter. I once saw one SME that was working its staff to death. But at the point when they were about to close, they decided to take a whole week just to sit down and think through their business model. That one week, they cancelled many useless projects and funnelled resources to the high-value ones. Over the next 1 yr, the company reinvented itself and thrived.
@Callsign-Blade_RunnerSG3 жыл бұрын
@Jason Yip Singapore’s SMEs are notorious for it.. Many expects employees to work overtime but not willing to pay the 1.5 rates for it. A large section of them even outright don’t pay 1.5 cause of NTUC & MOM’s inaction.

I think this applies to all industry..either one way or another, no matter the job roles, there is bound to be a toxic environment or toxic colleagues.. Previously i was offered a role in a well known printing company ( japan brand) in operations & support.. Was really taken aback on the 1st day of work, there were already expectations set for you. U need to man up and learn on your own...and the fact that the colleagues there are really not good at passing take over duties and orientation and even supervising. You were expected to look for each department senior to ask them to teach you how to do a certain task...lunchbreaks were like 30 mins flat. I can foresee the japan culture already ingrained here..Thankfully, i left ..felt so stifled and see no opportunity for real growth...

This includes construction. For the amt of time at work, quite poorly paid. I was an engineer, I used to enjoy my job to learn new things but when you are talking about settling down. It is one of the worst industry. I left but my hubby is still there. Like what u all discussing few podcast earlier about 4 days work week, I am secretly hoping construction can be strictly 5 days work week. Now is like 6 days and occasional even Sunday need to go back. Starting this project, my hub has been working until really late at least once a week. It is considered normal for the industry. This is why no one is willing to stay in the construction (architect or civil engineer) line.

This could be mitigated to some extent if we are more innovative as a Nation. And innovation is a mindset or attitude that comes with substantial risk of failure. Hopefully we can spare more resources to experiment and grow from failures. Another way is to have more locals in management. How to do that? probably opening up the premium institutes for more local candidates, relax the entry criteria, better subsidies in tuition fees, provide resources that would encourage them towards this field.

I work in a large French multi-national company, and I can tell you that it is not the case. Management on all levels will always do their best in English when even 1 person in the call is not French. It might have been the case decades ago, but since I joined more than 10 years back, it is very much an English-first for international meetings, because that has been the main mode of communication in both verbal and written. Maybe it is not common among some smaller French companies, but global players will be more understanding and accept a lot of compromise in terms of the official "company language".

Hi guys :) I’ve been enjoying your podcasts since the days where GRVTY was the background 😆 It has been refreshingly entertaining and the comical spins have been hilarious (especially Dan’s Simp-ing days hasn’t yet seen it’s last) May I kindly offer a suggestion? This episode though rich in content, seemed a lil long drawn. Perhaps the fatigue that you guys experienced is getting a lil harder to mask. I appreciate the thought processes and work done behind this and the discussion that ensued even in the comment section! Perhaps “Daily Ketchup” could be used for this exact need, where a single topic would entail the entire podcast; whilst “Daily Who-Knews Ketchup” 😉😉 could cover what you guys did before, on the current happenings in our lovely island :) Keep up the good work and Jia you!
