as someone who's not from america, the idea that any president: 1- can pardon themselves 2- can pardon any blood relative 3- cant be prosecuted if they are on office or not (?) is wack

Totally agree. These laws are asking to be exploited. You can't prosecute a sitting president? Why not???? A crook is a crook and surely nobody wants a crook as their president?? But they do in USA. It's all going to implode like in the film 'Downfall'.
@wojciechmuras5532 ай бұрын
Is that really that unusual? The Polish president has many of the same powers. EDIT: Just checked the UN database, and as I said, it's the polar opposite of unusual - the vast majority of countries, from paragons of democracy such as Finland, through autocratic one-party states like China, to the most tyrannical dictatorships like Eritrea, have and routinely use the power of pardon. Nothing to get excited about. I counted 14 out of the ~195 countries that don't have this option.
@jorgeramos49942 ай бұрын
A majority of governments has a pardon system apart from the US. Is not at all something uncommon, just something that, like many institutions used to have some moral or ethical compass. Although it is a prerogative, people used to exercise it with a lot more care...

Biden went rogue, regaining salience long enough to complete his redemption arc. His own party insiders couped him, so he decided to focus on his personal affairs and not the party’s. Demos are so incoherent and low info. They have no solutions. Even their platitudes lead us in the wrong direction. Besides, power of pardon is a perk of the commander and chief of the military ie the root of all law and order. As someone who wants to abolish/divide the Dems, Biden is a hero.

As a Canadian, I have been constantly stunned over the last 10 years or so at what has been exposed in American democracy. For such a celebrated democracy, the amount of power to just rule on things with Executive Orders, Presidential Pardons and stacked courts is absolutely shocking. I can't think of other Western democracies that give their President and a handful of elite insiders so much personal, unfettered power to overrule the rule of law, or democratic process. Stunning.

A few things you may not be aware of: • Executive orders are limited to directing the actions of federal agencies, and are still bound within the parameters of congressional legislation. They are not a replacement for law. • I’m not sure what you’re referring to by “stacked courts”, but the President cannot change the size of the Supreme Court (one of the things that was considered in this past term) without congressional legislation. • In the same vein as the above, the President may nominate judges for the Supreme Court or lower federal courts _but_ the nominees have to be confirmed by the Senate.
