It's interesting from Jordan himself also that he seemed to lead into the story like we'd understand once he told it, but there was no explanation of any danger or reason for security at all. It's also pretty sad that the entire point behind his story is that when we HUMANIZE each other rather than DEMONIZE, we remember that we're all human, and actually want a lot of the same things. There was a woman who walked into the bathroom with a journalist, Katy Tur, getting ready to go into the lion's den with one of the many Trump rally's back in 2016. The woman was a hair dresser. She asked to help Tur if Tur wanted help. The start to talk. No hecking. No curse words. They were comfortable talking with the other. When they went out into the arena, it changed. The woman turned into a vituperative, nasty person. She was yelling mild words like "F**k You!". There were nastier words, too. After the rally was over, she found Tur and asked for a photo. She was bubbling over and hoped Tur would come to more rallys for all of the great times. She was separated with the rally vs. her normal life in her own mind. Tragic and very, very dangerous.

This isn't so bad. There are nasty members of congress who are apparently real sweethearts and surprisingly intelligent, but when they're on the floor, they play to the voters. Lindsay Graham has a lot of Dem friends because he's like that, and that means he's capable of doing meaningful work, including finding compromises with his political opponents, behind the scenes, where it often matters. A lot of Dem senators respect him. There just haven't been many opportunities lately where it's been politically advantageous for him to work across the aisle. Republicans are all kinda stuck right now, and it's not because they have two faces. They're just cursed with the most vile leadership they've ever had. And I agree about "vituperative".

Hey, this is great! Reminds me of a similar situation I was in just last summer! I was traveling on an international flight from the U.S. to Finland and sat next to a fellow from Russia who had lived in the U.S. for a long time. We started talking before the flight took off UNTIL IT LANDED and then KEPT TALKING as we walked off the plane (at a couple points I had to strongly push the conversation aside so I could sleep/eat/etc.). We were complete opposites on /everything/. He was a Russian Orthodox Jew who was incredibly conservative while I am a liberal Christian. He was a strong and fast Trump supporter while I am adamantly against (and appalled by) this administration. Ideologically, we were entirely opposed (if I began to share the topics we discussed, my liberal friends would be utterly horrified anyone could believe what he believed). But here’s the thing-I absolutely adored him. He was a fantastic listener, he genuinely wanted to hear ‘my side of the story’, so to speak, he was affirming and kind, highly intelligent, and by the end of some of our conversations he even told me that he’d never considered what I’d proposed. By the end of the flight he was showing me photos of his family and we were laughing and having a wonderful, wonderful time. Even as we stepped off that plane, he kept looking behind him to wave over and over again. I’ll never forget that plane ride. On paper, over the internet, we’d have never made a connection like that-it’s possible I would’ve even resented a man like him. But in person, knowing the real human, I loved him. Despite all of this madness, despite the hurricane of evil and illusions that has been cooked up, I do believe people are fundamentally all searching for the same things: connection, safety, tenderness, love. Thanks for sharing this story, Jordan. Somewhere out there is my own “brick suit guy”, and I really love and cherish him, and the future I believe in and want to make is a future for both of us. Keep on, friends.

Studies show that the more you study something, the more you appreciate and understand it. A college professor did an experiment around this idea where he had students research something they didn’t like and they found that the students came out with a different understanding and appreciation for what they researched. That is why they have to keep us divided.
@nicolecopland46111 күн бұрын
"they," as if republicans haven't been wanting to eliminate education and drive Americans into poverty EVERY chance they get for DECADES. I think it's healthy that people know the differences, e.g., one party CONSISTENTLY destroys the economy while telling voters they won't. One party CONSISTENTLY pulls us into recovery. One party thinks all Americans deserve rights, too, while the other demonizes minorities and immigrants continually.

Exactly why social media has made things more toxic - there’s no room for true human connection and nuanced conversation with the goal of understanding. It’s all about gotcha moments and defeating the opposition, treating those with differing beliefs as enemies and idiots. Understanding is NOT the same thing as agreeing, but when we disagree we tend to shut people out and not even try to understand one another. Jordan Klepper and Trevor Noah I think are phenomenal at having this type of discussion with those who they disagree with.
@JVSMusic7012 күн бұрын
Very cool story, gets me thinking that online discussions suffer from the same problem, like cameras in congress, people who would have a normal discussion on a disagreement in real life will try to outdo each other to win the argument and get more extreme to do so.
@1PeakMindset10 күн бұрын
In both online interactions and face-to-face conversations, people often prioritize proving themselves right rather than truly engaging in active listening. Instead of seeking to understand the other person’s perspective in greater depth, they focus on defending their own viewpoint or winning the argument. This tendency can lead to missed opportunities for meaningful connection, mutual understanding, and productive dialogue. By shifting the focus from proving a point to genuinely listening and exploring different perspectives, we create space for deeper communication and shared growth.
