skekVar & skekUng the Skeksis Generals

Is skekVar the General also in The Dark Crystal film? Was that skekUng in Netflix's Age of Resistance? Am I the only one confused about this? We'll be looking at these two Skeksis and more on today's episode of The Dark Crystal Conjunction.

After I saw the titles of each, I kinda put two & two together and realized it was a different dude. He DID KINDA look like a younger version of the one from the movie tho...

SkekUng has more of a hairier mane of hair on his head with prominent side-burns- a very early 19th British type look, his beak is thinner with a hook end. His mouth has fangs peering out in his upper jaw and has sharpened bony brows. His attire seems like organic with the back ridges extending upwards as an intimidation tactic. His personality is also very different from SkekVar- SkekUng seems more aware of the political game than SkekVar ever did and while SkekVar seems to be a proud warrior; SkekUng seems like a badly restrained mad dog who’s surprisingly charismatic amongst his peers; but seems more sadistic and violent than SkekVar.

In episode 9, they mentioned skekUng by name, and how they should probably summon him along with some other travelling Skeksis to the castle for their war against the gelfling. Not to mention that his facial structure is actually not very similar to that of skekUng upon closer inspection. With that being said, skekVar and skekUng are not at all the same person. At the time skekVar was still alive, skekUng had been away from the castle

skekUng was mentioned by the master of ceremonies in episode 9 of age of resistance as a strong warrior. Since chamberlin killed the general in the season finale, it's likely that SkekUng will take the generals place and take command of the garthem in the next season, as well as try to take a seat at the emperors side

Also skekVar's nostrils are positioned on his beak, while skekUng's are behind his beak. Var's upper-teeth are mostly hidden when his mouth is closed, while Ung's are visible as if he is permanently snarling. The top of Var's head is mostly bald (although we only see this when he removes his helmet) while Ung has more hair on his head.

Doubt it. It is likely that not all Skeksis live in the castle. SkekNa and SkekShod from the movie has not appeared either. It is possible that the 3 missing skeksis lives in a residence somewhere else. There should also be two more skeksis somewhere out there.

Hi, Would you explain in a video why at the end of the series, the Gelfing and Aughra told the Skeksis to retreat back to the castle? I was confused about why they seemed happy with that option since they knew the Skesis would still have control of the crystal and could keep harming and experimenting on it. Thanks!

They thought they could win a war against them. Because while they are considerably stronger 1 to 1 against gelfling and Arathim, they would be 10 against an army of the entire gelfling race. They would likely have no problem winning if not for the Garthim

I never agreed with that decision either, should have finished them when they had the chance, bu that is not the Gelfling way. You have to understand that the Gelfling are innocent and mostly docile and very gentle natured creatures, I would even describe their warriors as "soft". So they assumed the Skeksis would go back to their castle and just remain there and accept their defeat, but as we all know, that is not how the Skeksis are. Atleast thats how I see how and why they made that choice.

Rather they just allow them to retreat back to their castle and escape.

Here's a question I'd like answered. Aughra clearly distrusts the Skeksis in Creation Myths, but it is established in AOR that she entrusted them with the Crystal. I wonder if this is in reference to the fact that in CM volume 2 Aughra mentions losing her faculties after the crystal cracks: "A hole grows inside of me. I felt the Crystal crack in my very heart. Where once was great knowledge. Like smoke. It slips away." Could the cracking of the crystal have given her Alzheimer's-like symptoms, and she simply forgot that the Skeksis were evil?

Creation Myths also makes the point time and time again that there are some things she is blind to. Raunip could see things from a very different perspective, probably cause he was a little more on the malicious side in his younger years. It definitely does seem like Aughra forgets things and especially when distracted by the stars (not to mention when she begins astral projection).

I don't think so, I believe this is just something they (the producers) changer for the sake of the story. It's not true to canon in many, many details. Also, they said the skeksis gave Aughra the observatory, when in fact it was the Urskeks, many many maaaany thrines ago, whey they first appeared.

What I really want to know is what was skekUng's title during the lifetime of skekVar as General? Thanks to the show, the Garthim didn't exist until after skekVar died and they used Gelfling as Warriors. My believe is he was title the Warrior, based on the conversations the Skeksis have in Ep.8 to call the rest of their number back to the castle, or he took the title of Conqueror after skekGra was banished.

You’re right. skekNa (Slavemaster) and skekShod (Treasurer) from the, movie has yet to appear in the prequel. It’s likely that not all skekSis live in the castle. I believe that skekEkt (Ornamentalist) was not present during the first episodes but arrived later. It’s possible that the 3 missing skeksis from the movie lives in some other residence in Thra.

Please talk about The Hunter and The Archer and Augrah as the next topic!!!! I have so many questions. Why did the Archer disappear when falling to his death? Was he going back to Thra? (the skeksis, and by reason the mystics, can’t cause they aren’t part of Thra, but Augrah was involved...) Was that the moment he was reunited as one with the Hunter? How did that happen mid fall? How did their deaths result in Augrah’s rebirth? I haven’t seen these moments talked about. I would also like more info about The Heretic and the Wander’s background, if there is any past what they give in the series. I haven’t read any of the books, so I don’t have info from those sources yet.

I got the same questions! With all the works we currently have out there is no newer info, so it would all be conjecture. But we got three new books coming out in November, two specifically on Age of Resistance, so once I get my hands on those I'll be digging for answers. :)

My question would be if Netflix grants a season 2 of the Dark Crystal. Based on the information you've to examine from the books and movie. How do you see the two worlds leading into the other or will they remain slightly separate rendition of the same world? Because in the series the Skeksis have been reduced from the count in the movie. Augura in the series knows very well what's going on and is on the side of the Gefling in this war versus her position in the movie. I'm wondering how they or if they will flush out connecting the movie to the series. I hope we can learn a bit more about where the UrSkek come from and what authority banished them?

You asked about the feathers (or whatever they are) moving on their backs. In the film, when the Chamberlain is disrobed, there is a quick shot of him where you can see little arms curled up on his back. Even though the Skeksis don't seem to use their secondary arms (except for the Hunter), perhaps their costumes are constructed in a way that permits their secondary arms to manipulate them. Maybe those little arms pull handles and cause the costumes to move like a peacock's tail feathers.

Ya, that very well could be. It is mentioned elsewhere that since they kept decorating themselves with more and more robes they made their other pair of arms atrophy, basically. The hunter could care less about that and he obliviously stays in better shape and dresses more practically for THE HUNT! Also, if you look at Creation Myths you can see young Skeksis with all arms nice and limber.

Thank you for explaining. Personally, I always knew SkekVar and SkekUng were completely different Skeksis, but I can understand how some fans may be confused. It’s interesting how similar SkekUng is to SkekVar. They are both very (yet fittingly) opposite to their UrRu Counterparts: UrIm the Healer is SkekUng’s counterpart, and SkekVar’s counterpart is UrMa the Peacemaker. It’s interesting that both generals love to shed blood, while their counterparts try to heal and bring peace. Both pairs are a perfect representation of light and dark balance. I know most of the UrRu/Skeksis pairs are very and fittingly opposite, but it’s almost ironic in the case of these two. The only pair that is very opposite but not fittingly so is SkekNa with UrNol. Their counterpart relation is perhaps the most interesting, given that their roles as a Slave Master and an Herb Tender have absolutely nothing to do with each other, opposite or otherwise.

I'd suggest the rising along the backs of the Skeksis when angered are probably there quills rising beneath there clothes, I seem to recall the chamberlain had a row of them along his back and shoulders when he was disrobed.

I noticed SkekVar's puppet doesn't look detailed as the rest of the Skeksis. Perhaps because he wasn't going to live into future seasons and he was just a character to build up tension with chamberlain and ultimately to his demise. SkekVar's brutality is setting the bar low and when SkekUng appears, we will probably feel as though killing SkekVar was a bad decision

It seems like the Skeksis had multiple Skeksis in military roles, which is why it was so easy to exile skekGra while Skeksis who aren't so easy to replace, like the Scientist, are just sort of beaten into staying. Someone was also probably happy to take his job.

@TheDarkCrystalConjunction Q&A, where are all the other Skeksis that don't appear in Age of Resistance? I noticed that SkekNa and many other Skeksis from the movie and books didn't appear in Age of Resistance? Why is that and where are they? Hope you do a video on this? Thanks!

I may, not much info on them except skekSa who is in the books mostly on the sea parts that we got tiny tiny glimpses of in the movie... since those mostly dealt with water and that is extremely tough for puppets they left that Skeksis to the books. Other than that we just hear they are out and about in Thra, not really at points of interest from Age of Resistance.

Here's a question to explore, one that's been bugging me for a while now. Where did the two False Shards come from. As I understand it, it has been hinted or stated that the Skeksis made the decoys to fluster anyone looking, and if so we can probably blame skekEkt for making two perfect replicas. Anyhow, I just hope a Season Two does happen, and answers these questions and more.

Short answer is there was a crystal chamber where the original shard fell into and Aughra and her son, Raunip, spend a long time looking for it and just wind up grabbing a whole bunch that may match. Creation Myths vol. III shows this. But there is still lots of story to tell, cause how to SkekGra & urGoh get it to forge that sword!? Then how does it wind up back in Aughra's observatory. :Questions questions, too many questions!" - Aughra :D

SkekUng is orders of magnitude cooler than skekVar, who seems clueless and careless by comparison. Even Emperor skekSo may find it rather difficult to intimidate the future Garthim Master. SkekUng is fiercely vigilant, whereas skekVar is too often oblivious in his bluster.

Question for you...Regarding the original movie, was the puppeteer performer Swee Lim's Mystic character retconned after the movie to then become the Mystic Herbalist named UrNol? Because as I watched the movie credits rolling, I saw the character named "Hunter" under the list of Mystics. [Whaat?? Not a Skeksis?] I researched the performer Swee Lim online... sources all state he was the Herbalist, even though the movie credits show his name next to the character "Hunter". Was there ever a "Mystic Hunter" in supplemental books? Or was it only in the Dark Crystal movie rolling credits? BTW, I thought the Skeksis Hunter character in AoR was fantastic! Just wondering about the name changes from movie to series. Great vid here about the General(s)

Trivia fact...original Podling and Kira language was Russian or another Eastern European language. Since I know Serbo-Croatian I could understand Kira saying "sit" and "be good" to the Fizzgig. As well as "Thank you" at the Podling tavern. The show, however, uses some gibberish.

During the Trial by Stone scene the Skeksis in the background can be heard referring to SkekUng as "general". "General's really mad now" and SkekAyuk says something like "The general's the champion!".

The thing that raises up on their back when they're wearing their heavy robes or armor is their second set of arms. Unlike the Mystics (The UrDu) the Skeksis' secondary arms are smaller and somewhat weaker, and only the Hunter really uses them on a regular basis.

In the books they refer to those counterparts as female as well, which is strange cause technically they are gender-less and Jim says in an old interview that there is one though that is the most feminine. So I assume the pronouns they take are don't mean much more than their titles they take on and less to do about their sex, but we may get more explanation of that in latter material. :)
