Fun fact, the 588th Regiment only existed with this name for about a year. In early 1943 it was renamed as the 46th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, the "Guards" indicating their elite status within the Soviet Armed Forces, only earned by units that had proven their expertise in bringing a lot of hurt to the invaders. Major Marina Raskova was a navigator, participating in a number of female aviation records in the late 1930's, for which she earned the highest award in the USSR, "Hero of the Soviet Union". In 1941 she used her Hero status and personal connections to convince J. Stalin to allow her the formation of 3 all-woman aviation regiments, 586th (fighter), 587th (fighter-bomber) and 588th (night bomber) regiments. Initially these were all-female, including ground crews, but due to losses the 586th and 587th later accepted men as well. The 588th remained girls-only. And this song is a great memento to all those ladies. It does make my eyes water every time I hear it.

little nitpicking, the prefix 'guard' was more of an honour given to units with distinguish service than an actual showcase of how elite they are military wise, although in many cases these to criteria overlapped each other

if you look at Kolobanov's feat, the hero of the Soviet Union was crossed out in his award documents, replaced with the Order of the red star, although he deserves it twice, they say they quarreled with their superiors

This is why Sabaton is so great, you learn so much history that many people don't really know a lot about, if anything at all. And you can rock to it at the same time! The Soviet Union was one of very few countries to allow Women into their military. In the start of the war they were rejected, but after Germany invaded in Operation Barbarossa and Soviet lost many men and had big losses, they changed opinion and allowed women into their military. In total around 800K women served in the military for Soviet Union during WW2. Many of them snipers actually, like Lyudmila Pavlichenko with over 300 confirmed kills. There were also several women only air fighting groups as said in the video, and many women were partisans doing sabotages and fighting guerilla wars.

Pretty sure you noticed those words because they were emphasized in the story before the song, lol. This is easily on the top 5 of Sabaton’s songs in my opinion. And yeah, singer’s name is Joakim. Some songs still need some research in order to get the full experience. For The Poet and the Pendulum, for example, I really hope you at least do a little research on the circumstances that led to its creation.

There were legendary Soviet female snipers with hundreds of kills, female fighter aces, female tank crews. Here's a Wiki entry for one the fighter aces: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia_Litvyak About the slow speed and tight turning, the British Swordfish torpedo bomber had the same characteristics. It made for a difficult target for fighters and anti-aircraft gunners would miss as they would lead them too much. It may have been woefully obsolete by WWII standards, but it could take off from carriers in seas that were too rough for more modern aircraft to take off and land. It doesn't matter if the plane is obsolete when it was the only one that could fly in the conditions. All that to say that the comment about them being hard to shoot down by fighters rings very true. When a Swordfish went up against a British fighter in a training exercise, the fighter stalled and crashed, killing the pilot as he tried to stay with the Swordfish. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened to a few Luftwaffe pilots when trying to shot down a Night Witch.

Thanks for your reaction and sorry for my english. You've asked why women were allowed to fight. First of all, in USSR women has the same rights as a men, western traits of women rights, feminism etc are alien to our country. Another reason - that was war, that was not just question about allow or not, it was question about surviving. Whole country fighting against invaders. Some in front lines, others by working in factories. Even now, in Russia every family involved in that war, every family lost their husbands, fathers, sons in that war. USSR lost about 9 millions soldiers and more than 18 millons civilians

Personally I recommend saving the research for the review portion AFTER the song! Go in fresh and unknowing. Then research, listen again, then comeback for your review. Thank you David, a story lost to history and not found in the dusty history books, but one Sabaton can tell to remind us what the price of war is and of those that were willing to pay that price. As a vet the "thanks for your service no get lost' rings so true. These women could of flown what ever planes were in the victory parade, but instead the leaders get to enjoy the glory of victory these women paid for and now aren't even allow to share in. Great reaction and even better analysis as always. Sabaton and YarnHub create magic and seem a perfect partnership. I would suggest you do the research for Sabaton AFTER the song by going to their History Channel where Indy Neidell the historian (and metal-head) tells you about the event and the band explains how the song was written and why it was done the way it was. The one thing you will come away with is that no one researches history before they write a song like Sabaton!! Hope you are enjoying the Holidays and please stay safe!!

I understand your comments about not digging into the story behind the song in this case. However, if you ever get around to reacting to the "Poet and the Pendulum" by Nightwish, all 14 minutes of it, I strongly, strongly recommend you know the backstory. When I purchased the Dark Passion Play album, I had no prior knowledge of Nightwish. The album and the band just sounded interesting so I bought it. The "Poet" just baffled me plus "Bye, Bye Beautiful" and "Master Passion Greed" were totally devoid of context. It was only as I began to learn the backstory did I realize that the "Poet" was a true masterpiece and feel the gut wrenching emotions in the other two songs. If you know the backstory, have some tissues handy when you listen to the "Poet and the Pendulum".

It's true it was more rare to see woman soldiers during WW2, however as I understand it all Slavic women are fierce soldiers and ready to fight when needed. For example in Ukraine there are women snipers ,normal soldiers, and pilot's. I just saw a documentary on that conflict there, and how much those women are appreciated in most male army. And from my own army experience, I can say that women outperform men in certain things. They focus tasks more easily. Or it looks like it on surface.

Great video, I love Sabatons music. Was very much of two minds when I saw this, on the one hand the animated and cinematic videos give you a much greater emotional attachment to the story being told, and the gravity of the songs usually hits harder. On the other, they're live shows cannot be topped with sheer energy and engagement. Which is a better experience for you? I'll leave that up to you as whichever one you go with, you won't be left wanting.

Well, actually, as far as Soviet Union (not Russia - they aren't interchangeable) goes, quite a lot of women officially fought in WW2. I'd say the Red Army had more women in ir than any other army fighting in the war. And they didn't keep them back. These women were nurses, snipers, scouts, pilots and even tank crews in some cases. Think about it, they were so eager to fight the Germans. Even if the army didn't take them in, they would become partizans and they would fight anyways. Why waste the potential?

Taking a job as a nurse was usually the easiest way to see combat, even if it wasn't really part of the job. It put them close to (if not on) the front where it would be easy to take a weapon from either the enemy or a dead or injured ally and take the fight to the Germans. In Stalingrad in particular you'd see nurses basically become a part of a unit and fight alongside them, and dear lord were they ferocious. On a big-picture level, they were also more valued than the men when it came to the roles as snipers and radio operators. The former because they were comparatively more patient and could endure longer periods of discomfort than their male counterparts and had slightly better vision, on average. The latter because (again, on average) they tended to speak more clearly and better enunciate their words when speaking--which, as you can imagine, could make quite a difference when you're reporting on the location of the enemy, calling down artillery fire, etc.

I've found the best thing to do is to listen to them (with subtitles, if you can) and then find the associated episode on the Sabaton History KZbin channel. :) A lot of the time, they're right, it's great to find out - but a few do state their stories: this one, No Bullets Fly, Attack Of The Dead Men (it's in the lyric video) to name the ones I can recall off the top of my head. One thing I love about Sabaton is that if you didn't know the history, they make you want to. As for the animation, Yarn Hub employs young animators who are just starting out, if I understand correctly.

Cloth and wood hull has another added advantage, low radar footprint because metal reflects radar waves easier than wood and cloth that absorbs most of them. Also the reason Brits made a full Bomber using wood and cloth hull.

Yeah you are absolutely right, Sabaton's animated videos are so well made they are pretty self explanatory, no research needed, it will ruin the experience. If after the song you will go deeper on the story, you can check the Sabaton History Channel episode of the song, they go deeper with the help of an history teacher.

And technically from their tactics of attack night witches was the first stealth Bomber's. Despite the fact that 6 months after the war were disbanded and Soviet union was like "OK, we made you fight as you wanted, but now you are women go back to the kitchen". Huge respect to all this women of 588, 587 and 586. Nazis were in fear when night witches flight against them

Soviet Russia has always kind of been ahead of other countries as far as letting women participate in combat in modern warfare. There were some very notorious Russian female snipers during WWII including Lyudmila Pavlachenko who was credited with 309 confirmed kills.

Desperation. The Soviets were less discriminatory as a whole, while still having a lot of chauvinistic pigs individually. The Soviets desperately needed troops, especially skilled and educated. You can teach a peasant conscript which end the bullet comes out of and how the pointy end goes in the other guy pretty easily. But true marksmanship, mechanical knowledge and piloting skills, not so much. Such skills could be found in the upper echelons of the female population. All of the Night Witches were highly educated, most had college degrees, and most were already experienced pilots. And keep in mind they were the dregs of the female pilots, the better ones being assigned to medium bombers and the cream of the crop to fighters. And they did fear nothing. "No Bullets Fly" talks about the B-17's guns freezing in the sub-zero wind chill. These ladies flew in similar conditions IN OPEN COCKPITS. And not once every day or so, like the B-17s, but three or four times a night. I saw an interview with a 588th ground officer. She recounted watching a pilot return from a sortie, climb out of her plane, shaking with cold and fear, to stretch her legs while her plane was refueled and rearmed. She then took off for another attack. The officer said she did this six times. That's SEVEN bombing sorties IN ONE NIGHT. It made me reevaluate everything I have ever accomplished. Their planes were flimsy and burned like torches. Due to the Soviet stance that death was preferable to capture, they were not issued parachutes. If they survived being shot down... well, the Soviets were ok with female combatants, but the Germans were horrified. German generals illegally ordered that any of these unnatural creatures captured were to be shot immediately. Over 30,000 Russian female soldiers were executed on the Eastern Front.
