Which here in parts of Canada one needs a good CCA # on vehicle batteries in our -30c winter weather.

Thanks Mate good Video.. I bought one of these a couple of years ago.. just found it again... was in the boot of my car.. never used it but I will now after seeing your video...

CCA: Cold Cranking Amps, specified by SAE & BCI, most frequently used value for starting battery at 0’F (-18’C) IEC: Internal Electro Technical Commission Standard SAE: Society of Automotive Engineers Standard EN: European Automobile Industry Association Standard DIN: German Auto Industry Committee Standard CA: Cranking Amps Standard, effective starting current value at 0’C

They don't test real CCA, they test internal resistance and calculate the CCA. Selecting a different amperage I guess changes the algorithm, I wonder if the manual/spec actually mentions this! The old school testers did it for real.

Yes they did and carbon pile loads that you crank down on to compress and lower resistance killed more batteries in the hands of many that didn't know what they were doing whereas good battery suppliers use these smart testers which give more info about the battery and are much safer to use........who needs sparks from poor joints at 500-1000A near a battery that produces Hydrogen ? BOOM !

If you Google for a Ah to CCA converter, CCA = 7.25 x Ah. So 120 x 7.25 = 870 if that can be believed. Have you put an Amp Meter in series with the tester to see what it does? I prefer the old load box with voltmeter and big load press button on top. Load resistance is a coil of 8 gauge wire.

Yes I have a few different testers, including one that applies a 100A load, that one really shows up the weak batteries!

How can it possibly test and battery for something like CCA of 500 (Cold Cranking Amps) with two little resistors as a load? Have you ever seen the old school battery testers that the garages used. Big slab of copper, two spikes to cut through the led oxide and crud on the terminals and a meter that measured the battery voltage when it's pulling a massive amount of current.

That easy just make a very quick short and you can calutate from that - they can sink a lot of power in few ms

It calculates it based on the small load and the internal resistance it detects, this is better than another of my testers which only has a few 2W resistors in it, in fact that it was I up graded it to after it smoked… it used to only have a single 2W resistor !

I'd be curious how accurate the internal resistance measurement was. If you take a reading for reference and then add a very low value resistor in series with one tester lead and take a second reading does the calculated resistance increase by the known added resistance? I'm a little skeptical of testers that don't really load down the battery with 10's or 100's of amps. But maybe it can make the calculations, it had more internally than I expected to see.

These batteries are probably damaged, as I mentioned they dropped down to 7V over a period of weeks of discharge, so the resistances are probably correct, I do have other testers which I can use to cross check, so maybe I will do that.

Scott, did you miss the white cable on the plug inside, has a slice in it.. not sure if that will make it any better.. just seen it at the end of the video.. cheers mate 🤙🏼🇦🇺 Joe from Australia 🤙🏼🇦🇺

In your second test on the first battery, when it gave you 100%, you didnt set the Battery type to AGM. You left it on STD type. Presuming this would have given the incorrect reading..
@TheDefpom Жыл бұрын
Yes, it was more of a demo of the tester, I did recheck it with the AGM setting later.

Hmm I think I will stick with my top Don one it does cold cranking Amps, starter current etc I guess you get what you pay for
@TheDefpom Жыл бұрын
Yes I have another testers that can check for alternator performance etc, but it was considerably more money.
