I’m a proud Asante. The British tried to destroy our Kingdom but we survived, and that’s how they still respect us. Asantehene was one of few allowed to come with their entourage during the coronation of King Charles, and main one whose photos with King Charles was published in the British newspapers. Asantes have always been brave, proud, and confident and that’s how every black person should be.

As a Ghanaian, let me share that there is a STRONG etiquette and formality to everything we do in our traditions. From the significance of using the right hand, to how you greet people when you enter a room, and say goodbye when you leave. The type or patterns of cloth you wear and how you wear it shows your role or place in ceremonies (Did you notice that everyone man around the Ohene/King or approaching the king, removed their cloths from BOTH of their shoulder? This is a sign of respect for the Ohene). The size of the umbrella that is carried over the chiefs, and I could go on and on. Please learn and understand these formalities and etiquettes when you travel to Ghana. They will help you show the proper respect and you will fit in well.

This is beautiful. Keep it up guys, We love your reactions. Little tip, the Ashantis or Asantes isn't an ethnic group. It is a tribe. And it is part of an ethnic group called Akans. In the Akan ethnic group there are Fantes, Asantes, Ekuapims etc. An ethnic group in Ghana simply means different tribes with similar culture. So several tribes who have almost the same language or culture are put into one ethnic group. Other ethnic groups have only one tribe, but many of them have several tribes.

If people can respect presidents, they are even more obliged to respect and pay homeage to kings. Monarchs will live forever from one dynasty to the next but Abraham Lincoln's son would not become president simply because his dad was president similarly to all presidents. The Ashanti people are a very specific and important nation of people in not only Ghana but in the story of Africa and the world. The majority of what we now know as African Americans are of Ghana and west african heritage. There are nations of people in Africa that are prominent in the international discourse and identity of the black story. The Ashanti of Ghana, Yoruba of Nigeria, Igbo of Nigeria, Zulu of South Africa, Khoisan of Southern Africa, the Messai of Kenya, the Hutu of East Africa, the Tutsi of East Africa, the Shona of Zimbabwe and the Xhosa of South Africa carry alot of history and identity with them. Yes there are indeed many other nations of people on the African continent with great contributins to the story of the African identity but these nations have shaped alot of how people view the African child and how the African child wants to be viewed as a member of the international community of races.

I do not think you fully understand the entire story of the Asante Kingdom. Elmina Slave Castle was built in 1482, but the Ashanti kingdom was established only in the 17th century, almost 300 hundred years after the Elmina slave castle was built. The kingdom was birthed out of a bondage. Asante means because of war. The Tribes were in bondage for hundreds and hundreds of years before the kingdom was established. Do your research properly, and then you will understand that there is more what you know or think about the Ashantes and the slave trade.
