Yeah. They've banned full automatic weapons from new manufacture for civilians already, so now they're just banning "scary features." I'm honestly worried that the next step for them will be banning semi-automatics or detachable box magazines, which would ban pretty much every non-revolver pistol (and some revolvers, too) and probably 50-95% of sporting rifles sold today. Then when that happens, what happens to my lever action? If I keep that thing well oiled, I can snap off a shot every 3/4 of a second for seven shots, because 6 in the tube/one in the chamber. Would that be classified as "too fast firing?"

There are videos out there of people shooting, one with one 20 round mag, once with two ten round mags. The time difference was .2 seconds for all twenty rounds out of a semi-auto AR15.

There's a ban on federally licensed dealers selling guns to those under 21 (The Brady act) but private sales/manufacture/finding a gun/being given one by family or friends/etc is all still legal. Aside from that, the age to carry and own firearms is under 18 in half the states.

DDG I can understand owning a gun if you feel that it is necessary for your safety. I live in Australia, do not own a gun and never have. The difference is I have always felt safe here living that way. My question to you is (assuming it is possible) wouldn't you prefer to live in the U.S without feeling like you need a gun to be safe? One of the fundamental roles of Government is to protect citizens and uphold the rule of law, it's not just a service that some citizens choose to opt-in to. It actually comes down to the fact that in the modern day people don't require access to lethal weapons to be safe and carrying a gun actually increases the risk of being shot (google "new scientist carrying gun" for the evidence). Easy access to guns creates a false impression of safety, while enabling bad people to kill efficiently.

In the UK you're allowed to own a shotgun or rifle for sporting purposes, but you have to keep the ammo and gun completely seperate places, and can't use them for home defense. I think something similar for assault and high caliber weapons in the US could work. Lock up assault rifles in shooting ranges or designated shooting areas, that kind of thing. Gun control doesn't necessarily need to be outright bans on firearms, just controlling them to reduce the likelihood of their misuse.

The problem with banning guns is that there's already enough guns out in the wild already that are laundered and no longer able to be kept on record. Not to mention, it doesn't take much to make a simple zip-gun that could kill someone just as easily as the most high-tech weapon out there. I was a pizza delivery driver for 8 years and open/concealed carry. My weapon just being visible has made several people back off of their plans, and once saved me from being pulled out of my car.

Further to that, I suppose the gun control concept stems from the fact that the U.S has such a high rate of gun related deaths (not just mass shootings) in the developed world, and the highest rate of gun ownership. The question is whether a less heavily armed American populace will mean fewer gun related deaths each year, and whether pursuing that outcome must necessarily violate your right to bear arms.
