I love the fact that more of our people are telling our story in a better light. It is not making our parents look as bad as other people did when they told their story. It’s not making the thugs and dealers look bad either. It’s telling the truth about how we really grew up. Our life was not that bad and the people around us were respectable and caring. We all were as one in our neighborhood. We had our village life without the problems showed on tv. We had block parties like we all were close family.

White people got the same thing. In the 50's and 60's my parents wouldn't think twice about loading all seven of us up in the ole station wagon and go jam. They were both musically inclined, so Saturday nights were for getting together with friends for food, drink, and music. Kids running around at night with the lightning bugs, playing hide and seek. My parents would be lit, and there were no car seats! Some of my best memories as a kid. Busta was bringing it back for me.

Same here. About 25 years ago a friend and I bumped into him back stage at a concert and we were barely 18 years old. He and his security sent us on our way. At the time I was a little dejected, however in hindsight, he kept us from becoming groupies. We had no idea what that world was about and could’ve easily ended up on a trajectory of being used and discarded. Sometimes rejection can save your life. Thank you 👑KING BUSTA👑

Oh my heart! I've been going down the funky rabbit holes of Diddy and his gang and other industry guys from that time when a 21 year old or 18 year oild girl --a 16 year old even better--would be given the red carpet treatment stright to the roofies and the drugged champagn and their lives would never be the same. So many hollow-eyed men and women who will never shake the tragedy of a major sex abuse pile-on with their idols. This shows me that Busta is not just a decent man, he is a protector. Sure those girls in the above letter were not under 18, but that is not the point. Nothing magic hap;pened after midnight on your 18th birthday that will help you survive physical harm, disrespect, and aBUSE. Busta is a hero--as we are being made aware of the unholy evil that has ruined so many people's lives, it seems that Busta needs to be heard. It ain't the biz, it aint the culture, it's the individual. Chill O Ski--he woulda masde it even with that name!

@@oakcode- This is true. However, experiencing life, however mundane (or not) gives a generalised wisdom about life itself. For example, if you are a child in the street and you diss a stranger, an elder might say, “stop that.” Because they know the NEXT stranger you do that to might walk over and beat your a** (at the best), knife you through the heart at the worst. Because they have SEEN the consequences of people’s thoughts and actions. People don’t talk about other people’s business all the time, but they sure store the knowledge. B’s parents (and community) are as it should be. It takes a community to grow good children. It’s an invisible support system. Busta has always been an idol of mine. I really thank both of you for this interview. B, I am so glad you found your way back to yourself. I hope and pray that the young listen to your wisdom - when you talk about your childhood, it is global wisdom. What you felt is what so many young people feel - probably MOST young people. Your mom would send you to different countries to experience different cultures? Oh wow, what an EXCEPTIONAL woman. My admiration knows no bounds. May your message, ethos, determination and SPIRIT of you spread through the young people of the world. If you come someplace small in the UK to “play”….well, I will look for you. What would be really brilliant would be if you moved next door. I can totally imagine the philosophical discussions about life & the universe. Be well. Thank you both again. @@ShaneM420at first, I was going to list his faults. But your implication is spot on. He acknowledged his guilt but added the caveat that he did what he needed to do at the time and all the better for it. Without the "mistakes" of nearly killing himself, missing the kids' experiences, he wouldn't have had that life changing experience, etc. Life's complex, I bet he could have stated some mistakes if asked, but that wasn't the focus. The mistakes seems to have lead to good things... So, are they mistakes? Even not seeing his father much after his success, it taught him a valuable lesson that will make his own children better people. Thanks for the question.

I've only ever heard, what I call, 'surface' Busta Rhymes interviews, so I was massively surprised with this dialogue. It was excellent. It stopped me in my tracks a couple of times. Superb, in fact. It was refreshing to hear about the genesis of his dynamic stage performances and he's right, come to think of it, it was/is very Sting-like plus catching a rare glimpse of Trevor made this discussion even more special. Busta openly sharing his vulnerabilities, Caribbean paternal upbringing, passion, and wisdom definitely resonated. Appreciated his authenticity about his experience with losing not only Chris but also his father. The varying hues of grief need to be spoken about more, especially by men and I'm sure what has been shared will provide hope and guidance to many. I'm saving this interview. And if anyone is scrolling through the comments, yes - it's definitely worth a listen.
In a world that discourages men from being vulnerable and having open discussions about their personal lives, It is refreshing to see Busta Rhymes taking that torch and being open about his personal challenges in life. He has done a lot of self reflection and now sharing his widsdom. I like his music even more now.

Damn, i'm like 50 minutes in and I'm getting emotional at how passionate Busta is. Having grown up with his music it was always his energy that made him stand out from the crowd, so the insight into his dance hall roots (I also love dancehall music) was incredible. Even now when his tunes come on, we all just start bopping our heads and smiling. Time and time again we hear people say 'Do something you love, not for the money but because you love it. The money will come'. This is the best advice you can ever be given. I went self employed 9 years ago doing something and was interested in. I'm now in the best place I've ever been because of it. Go Busta!
@mella_butter Жыл бұрын
It's actually the worst advice. The money doesn't always come. But I'm happy it worked out for Bust Rhymes but it doesn't for most of us. Do what pays the bills unless you can get around it.
@shadeofheresy Жыл бұрын
Yean...no. I totally disagree with you. If you put your heart and soul in to something and work hard at it, then it nearly always works out better than the old 'just getting by'. Every siingle one of my friends and family who has given up well paid jobs to pursue something they loved has done well. So the whole 'It doesn't for most of us', comment is just not true in my experience. It's not always about the money either way. I would rather earn less and do something worthwhil.@@mella_butter

Man this was deep. Busta's music was a part of my childhood, I'm an 80's baby. I now find myself in one of the most competitive industries in the world, Wall Street. I absolutely love it. However, the statistics of success would make any normal person quit. You're looking at less than about a 5% chance of success. I have felt totally insane, stupid, discouraged, and like I'm totally wasting my time. But I have also seen success as well in my journey. The line that hit me so hard was, "It's delusional until it works." I know it can be done but damn that was powerful. Thank you so much for this interview.

I thought there was something wrong with me. 10 years after my father's passing I still cry when I'm asked what happened to him. Like Busta same day I spoke to my dad and planned on seeing him was the same day I got a call he had passed..... One can never know how to heal from such. My dad was my confidant, teacher and father. I still don't know how to heal from his death.

Great interview!!! I can remember the day, a close friend of mine that was always finding the best new music, played Leaders of the New School. My ears soaked in the energy, my head bobbing, arms pumping, and I was drawn to Busta’s powerful presence. He was in a different class, a higher level than the guys he was with. I’m no fanatic for anything, but I’ve kept up with Busta over the years. No matter what he’s done, he’s always had that invincible aura to him. It didn’t seem like he needed anyone. When he spoke of his friend dying and where he went after, how bad he got. And talked about getting the right support group around him, so he be his strongest self......... that may be one of the best gifts, I needed to hear. And I completely understand. I’ve lost so much over the years, and I’ve been in a dark place, unable to get back to a good place. It’s because I’ve been doing it alone, and drowning and drugging my pain away. I’ve isolated and pushed everyone away. You may not be invisible Busta, none of us are. But you’re definitely one strong individual, with a giant heart. Your works are still needed and appreciated!!! 32+ years later, this 49 year old white dude, is still drawn to your energy. Thanks for the interview!!!

Wow! This interview was tastefully done! Steven, your ability to create a safe space where someone such as 'The Busta Rhymes' could be vulnerable and speak on areas of his life so openly is commendable. Busta is undoubtedly the best in what he does(I might be biased because we're both Jamaicans), listening to his story really lit a fire under my ass. I am learning to be selfish, to be able to say..."I can't do this right now maybe later" or simply "I am unable to do this." I am so happy that I stumbled across this interview, it really has me self-reflecting. "Identify what you love where your actions speak more than you can say... not the drive for money but what ignites your soul = preordained success & happiness." Busta needs to be a guest lecturer in schools...very intelligent & articulates very well.❤

Busta needs to return to Uniondale High School again for the new generation to hear his inspiring words of wisdom. Also at other high schools on Long Island, New York & the city’s five boroughs! He did come to our to his alma mater in the Uniondale community several years ago, but he is at a point in his life where he can encourage the Gen X youth to strive for their purpose in life and do what they are passionate about! Definitely would be an awesome guest motivational speaker at high school and college graduations! I’m proud of Busta and his achievements, I’m 60 years old and a fan of his and the old school rappers, MCs & DJ’s. Hip Hop was born from my generation in the Bronx & Brooklyn where I was born & bred! I still think he's evolving, and is going to continue on his journey, and one day I think there will be a definitive and fascinating documentary to make about Busta Rhymes and his life and work.
