I think one thing that could have been mentioned is this game plays a lot faster than most other Garphill games. We have really enjoyed it because we get that Garphill engine-building-with-cards feel in under an hour (and then sometimes want to immediately play again).

THIS IS SUCH A GOOD GAME! can't stop playing it. Sooo fast so much fun, I absolutely love it. Totally different to all others and comes in 3rd of all Garphill games after Paladins and Scholars.

It's funny that Shipwrights is missing from Mike's shelf. Every other Garphill game has its place there 😅

Couple of things, in almost every card drafting game I've played the cards are not balanced. There's always a bingo for some and not for others. In my group Jarls are useful but not nearly as powerful as getting ships that give income early on. I kind of wish all ships did that. Craftsmen are great and I do agree early buildings are nice so you can play craftsmen or townsfolk under them to build that engine. In the games we've played (all 5 player) the folks who can build at least two big ships do the best it seems but we've had people build zero buildings and win, build 6 small ships and win. Jarls rarely are used for anything but getting a gold. Also, just a suggestion, play the first couple of turns as a turn based game rather than simultaneously when teaching. It allows others to see how the mechanics work and lets the teacher explain things more easily. It makes things a tad longer but I think improves play in the long run. The only issue we have with the game is advancing on those dang tracks! No one has ever gotten a victory point on those in my group! We love the game, 8.5...

"This multiplayer competitive game is best played solo" is honestly a pretty damning review.

I'm glad Mikes here to interpret Chris and Tom. lol........

I disagree with so much as to what Tom said here. Of the things he dislikes in this game I actually love. I love the puzzle of working out an engine, through tight resources, and workers that have to be used not regained, and thinking on how to pivot tactically if I do not get the resource or card I need. Jarls are not the most powerful cards in the game that you must draw all the time. Not if it means you have to forsake a townsfolk going to a building and creating an engine building synergy. I have had games where I've built three large ships, so it is wrong to say it is impossible..
@npckse85086 ай бұрын
Consider that Tom has played so many games, that it is possible when he identifies issues, he is seeing something from all the thousands of other games, some likely similar to this one that he can forecast into this game. Also consider that he is likely not playing this one 6-8 times, enough to see how the game actually balances out, which let's face it, typically requires more than 1 or 2 plays.
@CaptainPedantic6 ай бұрын
@@npckse8508 I have played this more than 20 times, which is why I can say Toms assumptions of the Jarl card being over powered is incorrect.

I get very strong "It's a Wonderful World" vibes from this game. DT gave that game an excellent but liked this one less. I'd be curious what the differences are?

I’m sure they’ll get it right in a couple years with a third redux 😅
@TheEternal7926 ай бұрын
I actually don't agree that the jarls are the best cards or are automatic drafts. Are they good? Absolutely. Are they the best? Situationally, maybe. They require a gold to play, so you're losing a point/flexibility just by playing them, AND you're taking up a valuable spot underneath a building you've constructed. That's a hard sell, imo, when I could put better engine-building tools under there like the craftmen I would be able to reuse for multiple ships or townsfolk to make that worker placement spot even stronger. You could discard them for a gold, sure, but I don't think 1 point/resource is reason enough to take the card automatically. If there isn't another card in the draft that's useful to me, I'm much more likely to take a card that lets me draw another card or gives me a worker. I do not disagree, however, that buildings are significantly stronger early game.
@blacksheep99505 ай бұрын
Funnily enough we played this today and a Jarl card went right around the table until someone got given it as their sixth card. All cards are situational and people just had other priorities.

When this was first announced I hoped this would have a great redemption arc, too bad that it only ended up being "less bad".

I wouldn’t classify a 7 and a 7.5 as “less bad”.
@travisskane54596 ай бұрын
@@michaeldilisio557 In a vacuum, a 7/7.5 is alright; yet given the amount of experience the designer has now, I thought perhaps this could have been elevated to a worthy addition to the series. I cut the original version from my personal collection because it wasn't going to ever get played again, and I don't see anything that tells me this would get a play either.
@cthulwho81976 ай бұрын
@michaeldilisio557 we live in a world that contains a thousand plus games that score 8+. So I'm happy to pass on a 7. I'm overjoyed to pass on a 5.
@npckse85086 ай бұрын
@@cthulwho8197 Except you are describing a world where you pass on games because the Dice Tower decided they were below an 8. A world where someone else decides what games you need to play and which to skip. Sounds boring to me, as the Dice Tower peeps don't always get it right. In fact quite often their reviews and opinions differ from quite a few other people, because you know they are just a handful of people offering reviews. Even Tom and Chris and Mike would offer that a 5 or a 7 from them may be a 10 from someone else.
@cthulwho81976 ай бұрын
@@npckse8508no, I am describing a world where, unlike the Dice Tower, I am not sent a free copy of every game that is published. A world where I, and pretty much every other person, has limited funds to spend on games. I cannot afford to buy every game regardless of what others think of it in the hope that whilst they said it's a 5, I will think it's a 10. It's far safer to buy games that the vast majority of people think is a great game. Is a world where I can't afford to buy every game ever published a boring world? Possibly. Good for you if you can buy 1,000+ games a year. Will I miss out on a game I love despite everyone one hating on? Maybe. But I'll have dozens of other great games to play, so I'll survive. 😁 I mean if someone else wants to buy it and bring it along I'll give it a go. Then I can make my own mind up.

We love playing the Garphil trilogy games as Sagas, but have to admit we avoid playing the Runesaga because Shipwrights was not good. I see a similarity with Architects, but never played LoY. No game has balanced cards unless every person gets the same X cards. Every game can feel imbalanced, from Terraforming Mars to Everdell to Earth to Spirit Island. If cards are different, they aren't balanced.
@npckse85086 ай бұрын
I would offer that seldom are they supposed to be completely balanced. Any game with any left of drafting inherently has those issues. Part of the fun of the game for me.

First Shipwrights is not a trash game at all. It's only flaw, I think, is being too long for what it is. Same concept with twenty-thirty minutes of play, and we'd be talking about an enjoyable good game.
