The whole waiting thing at restaurants tips are almost necessary to make ends meet considering they pay you ass wages in the first place. That being said, I still don't agree with the way they implement them, making customers feel morally/socially obligated to tip.

In Washington state you can only make minimum wage as a waiter/waitress. On top of that 10% of whatever you buy comes out of their check. So if you don't tip atleast 10% they are loosing money from your order.. pretty fucked.

I'm so glad we don't have to tip in England. I do tip people if we get great service though but if they're anything less than great I'm not tipping them. We get paid decent wages for being bar staff or waitresses over here though, tips are just a bonus.

Just about the tipping thing. I worked a walk in party of 14 last weekend by myself. I did everything perfectly they even commented about how good the food was and how fast the service was. The bill was about 300 bucks. I have to pay the kitchen a tip out of 4% of the total bill. Which is pretty standard in the industry. And the guy that paid the whole bill gave me a 5 dollar tip. So I worked for an hour and a half couldn't take any tables while I worked this party and at the end of the day actually lost 7 dollars for my efforts.
@PhilthyCasualMedia8 жыл бұрын
The tip system sucks, but you have to do it. let's face facts, if you are having a bad day and you fuck something up at your job the worst thing that happens is your boss yells at you. No one takes your paycheck away. I agree with those that will say that the restaurant should pay more and tipping should go away. The converse of that is everyone has to agree with the menu prices going up... Significantly. Red Lobster might be able to eat the cost (not that they will of course) but Mom and Pop's family eatery can't afford to. Long story short: if you aren't going to tip your server, eat at McDonald's.
@polpottopg8 жыл бұрын
Never have tipped, never will, unless the service is absolutely amazing, i refuse to if im not obligated
@PhilthyCasualMedia8 жыл бұрын
+Auschwitz was a "prank" that was the whole point of my comment. You ARE obligated to tip. Tips are literally the bulk of a server's pay. The system is not supposed to be an "atta boy" for doing a good job, it is you paying the restaurant for the meal's food cost and preparation costs in the meal, and the gratuity Is payment to the server for the job they did for you. It isn't fair, it isn't right, and it is one of the only legal avenues of wage discrimination left but until our society all collectively decides to do away with it and pay more at the restaurant it is not optional.
@dzemohendrix8 жыл бұрын
+Jarrett Tennis Then you should absolutely reform the payment system of the servers in restaurants. This current one is pure bullshit.
@PhilthyCasualMedia8 жыл бұрын
+dzemohendrix I don't disagree. I am a big proponent of knowing what things cost right up front and getting paid a decent wage, but until that happens a quite protest against tipping because it is "stupid" or what have you just makes a customer a douche-nozzel. I'm pretty sure if anyone who thinks that they don't have to tip would be forced to work for 45 minutes to an hour with no pay, they wouldn't be very happy about it.
@kidslikethem14728 жыл бұрын
+Auschwitz was a "prank" Servers make $4.25 an hour man. Some places a server gets one person an hour, that's a dick move especially if it's not expensive food, drop two dollars or some shit.

The obligatory tip is such a ridiculous concept. That doesn't happen over here, people just actually get paid for their work. And then it's the customer's fault if they don't want to pay an extra 15% after paying for a meal or whatever. Maybe someone should fix the system?? It's the boss's fault for not paying proper wages, get pissed at them.

Exactly, most people don't know that you can only make minimum wage also. And that 10% of your sales comes out of your checks. Atleast in Washington state it does.
@KimberlyPristine5 жыл бұрын
Servers make at least minimum wage at $7.25, that is federal law. I think where a lot of servers misunderstand is that, say salary is $3, the rest of that $7.25 comes from tips. If the server doesn't make up the rest of the $7.25 from tips, then the business pays out the difference, but in then end, servers do make at least minimum wage.

Its not that easy, if you actually try to talk to your manager about it he will just pretend to file a complaint and then say that the chain you work for said it couldn't be done. And forget about talking to the chain restaurant itself, the owners (i.e McDonalds co Reps/Outback/BC co reps) are nearly impossible to reach. Not to mention that fees to take the restaurant that shafted you to court is higher then the actual money you lost of your wages.

I know this video is a year old, but I just came across this.. you realize as a waiter if you don't tip me I don't get paid right? I make $2.13 an hour. They're allowed to pay me under minimum wage because getting tipped is the "standard." Now yes, technically if I don't make at least minimum wage, they would have to supplement me up to that. But that means in a 5 hour shift I would make~$35. Now in those 5 hours, I would typically carry heavy trays, ruin my back, and run roughly 10 miles waiting on you hand and foot. All for $35 if you don't tip me. You can't just not tip and call it fair, unless America changes their standards and pays us fair wages.
