You need Laurentius movie of Waterloo, with Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Christopher Plummer as Wellington on in the background to provide ambience

My friend and I played this for the first time last night and my gosh this is a fantastic game. We made a few rules errors and didn't even finish the game...but after the first huge combat on the battle board, we were hooked. Very happy to have this one enter my collection.

Great review, the game must be played 3 player to really get the full value from it. The tension between the two Allied commanders trying to get their act together before the on rushing French hit them is wonderful.

Yeah, I'd like to try that at some point. So far, only played with two players. Thanks!

I always love how infectious your positive reviews are. Just a suggestion: since you're a historian, have you ever thought about doing the occasional overview of types of games and/or companies? I think you'd have an interesting perspective wargames in general or, for example, Avalon Hill, specifically.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer8 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Do you mean something like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3yxiYmBmdSUfJI
@zeldadlez18 жыл бұрын
Yes, but a little more focused. I know Top X Lists are great for overviews and are easily digestible for KZbin (hence their popularity), but I love when people zero in on a topic more in depth. I just thought you in particular would be a good person to do that, especially on the war game and historical front. Just an idea, though!

Who knows. Maybe I'll tackle something like that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion.

With a healthy abundance of inside time I reached out to my Father today to make plans for watching Waterloo the day after his birthday here on the 10th. We have played C&C Napoleonic’s together a couple times and it was fun. I am thinking this title here might be the next step for us. Me I love my plastic obsession and have watched this review maybe a half a dozen times over the last three years or so. I really value your opinion and treasure these reviews you do. I have come to learn that just because I don’t THINK that I would be that into a certain game you praise does not necessarily mean eventually I will not come around to it (likely what is likely to happen with this one). I have come to noticed an interesting trend where the games you recommend tend to stick around on my shelves longer than the ones I pick out on my own. If I can be so bold as to inquire… how many “new to you” games do you try a year?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. That's an interesting question. A quick count suggests I reviewed about 50 games last year (not including expansions and reprints). I maybe played 6-12 more that I didn't review. Hope that answers your question. (I should point out that I didn't play games for about the first three months of last year, however.)

Maybe Columbia Games should have gone with 20mm blocks instead of 24mm. To increase fog of war each player could be assigned 8-12 decoy blocks.

Columbia’s Napoleon or command and colors? Surprised you didn’t compare the two. Or maybe that’s another video?
@TheDiscriminatingGamer3 жыл бұрын
I really think they are two different games. Commands and Colors is kind of its own system - plus its multi-scenario. Napoleon really plays quite differently. Blocks are used very differently as well in Napoleon - fog of war, loss of steps, etc... I really don't think there is any comparison other than superficial presentation.
@greginfla_13 жыл бұрын
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer Do you prefer one over the other? I have Columbia‘s Napoleon with a 40 x 30 map and a double set of wood pieces.

You know I watch all of your videos even if I am not interested in the games just for your humor. I own version 2 or 3 of Napoleon and enjoy it. My game does not have the terrain blocks though. I wonder if Columbia makes an up grade kit.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer8 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I really liked the terrain blocks as it really gave the battles of sense of the defender picking his ground. Thanks for watching.

Sold this puppy. The map was a huge disappointment for me. It is ridiculously small and after originally being billed as mounted arrived on thin cardboard. Probably a very good game in there somewhere but I expected them to sort out the map size issue this time, but alas no.

I agree that the map is too small (see review), but its ultimately functional and the game is fantastic. I hope you get chance to give it another look.

Thanks for the review. There are a lot of Napoleon games around: Command & Colors, Victory & Glory, Waterloo Stratego, Napoleon 1806, Waterloo: Napoleons last battle, etc. It would be good if these games could be compared to each other. Is Napoléon better than all these other games?

I believe that the game relies on too much luck. You can be playing Napoleon or War-hammer chucking 6 side dice. I played the game once and probably will not play again. It follows the very simple silly system of Columbia games. Great intro game, but for serious player pass it up.
@TheDiscriminatingGamer8 жыл бұрын
Let's not forget, von Clausewitz said, "War is the realm of chance." I'm okay with dice chucking if it's structured into a game with real and meaningful strategic choices.
