This is a great and instructive video, as all of the ones I've looked at have been. I'm currently waiting for my base tissue 'rocks' to dry so I can finish the base and get to painting this sucker. I started about three days ago, working on it for a few hours each day, watching TV or playing on the Xbox while waiting for glue and/or water soaked tissues to dry, as well as working on regular minis. DMScotty's worm is the best I've seen to date, and when done, mine will be pretty darn good as well. I'm so glad a player sent me to this site since his 3-D printer couldn't make it happen. Keep up the great work!

I wanted to suggest, if you do want some very sturdy stuff to build the skin with, diaper wipes that have been set out to dry are very very sturdy and do not break at all under getting wet :). Good show this time!
@TheCaboose56810 жыл бұрын
Something I learn back in school when I did this stuff, in the body of the worm you can take a few marbles and layer them in with hot glue to keep them stable to weigh down the base.
@theDMsCraft10 жыл бұрын
True, you could really use anything to weight it down.

I do have a tip that may help. When I do the glue/sand technique, after the glue is dry and you dump the excess sand off I always take a large soft brush and gently brush away any sand that may just be barely hanging on. That way you do not have to worry about it falling off after you have painted it and dont have to go back and touch it up.

Thank you for this tutorial, DM Scotty! I love making sculptures of monsters so this was a delight to watch. If you're ever looking to try a new clay brand, Creative Paper Clay is awesome; it's got a nice texture and it dries really strong; you can sculpt it really easily with a little water smoothed on your finger. I'd love to see more diy monster sculptures in the future; there might be a remorhaz in my campaign so I've been watching this for reference.

theDMsCraft Also, have you ever tried using cold porcelain as opposed to model magic? You can make it for about 1/4 to 1/5 of the price of the latter with white glue, all purpose flour, a tiny bit of lemon juice or other mildly acidic household liquid, and a bit of glycerin as a conditioning agent. You do need to store it in the fridge when not in use, but it is a dirt cheap air dry clay.
@theDMsCraft8 жыл бұрын
I love cold porcelain but it can be tricky to make sometimes and I was going for ease of use. I also like the fact that model magic is very light and will not cause the model to be top heavy. Cold porcelain would be awesome for the teeth though.
@zakhoskins64048 жыл бұрын
theDMsCraft I was thinking about putting down a thin layer of it on the carapace as well to get really fine scratches and pocks in it for a nice battle-scarred look. Will probably stick with the toothpicks for the teeth though as they already got a very nice point to them.
@zakhoskins64048 жыл бұрын
+theDMsCraft So I took a couple weeks off to work on other stuff and I'm trying to pick this back up. One question. At 11:34 you said the carapace was made out of card stock, but at 12:22, you referred to it as cardboard. It does look like card stock to me, but I didn't want to screw it up. Which one is it?

Because of this, i was able to focus on what you had to say and not struggle trying to follow along watching a fast forward build video. Seen a lot of how-to's on YT but they leave a lot to be desired because I feel I can do what they do but because they always fast-forward the video, it's a struggle to follow along and understand, thanks.

Love the tutorial, only had one issue-you layered the chitin plates backwards. Tunneling it's going to get all kinds of dirt in it, and the cunning Archer could put an arrow under them from the front. Plus, Fremen would have issue riding it... ;) Great tutorial, love the textures, love the colors, may try this one myself, but using salty dough or summat similar ribbed with florist wire. Easier to shape how I want maybe. Dunno. Never done anything other than Christmas decorations before.
