Pure brilliance! Thanks a bunch for this video. When you see a finished build (or part of) it is sometimes hard to fathom how someone went about making something so awesome looking. But with this tutorial it is a great reminder that patience and perseverance is the key and to keep in mind what the final vision will look like rather than get disheartened by what the build look likes on the journey there.

@@lewisharris3400 No, sorry I haven't finished it yet. I've temporarily shelved it do so another project but as soon as the wizard tower is complete I'm going to wrap that one up. I think the interior for that build has made it a lot more time consuming than I initially anticipated and I got a little burnt out from the project. Just needed to do something new to get my creative juices flowing again. I'm very eager to get back to it and get it finished.

good morning.. I've just come across your channel this morning. Your's came up as a suggestion after watching another channel of scenery techniques. While I'm not a RPG guy.. the scenery that you've created is fantastic and the lessons taught easily adapt to creating any sort of scenery for whatever. I'm into model RR and mountains are always the "Big Scene"..That said.. your videos are excellent, easy to follow and you have done a really great job putting the steps together to make it happen. Mouldmaker and caster here, few tips for you. 1. Dont just pour all the plaster into your mould, do layers. 1st layer do a "splash coat", very thin, consistency like milk. This will get into all the details, and make sure you do not get air bubbles. Build up your layers, and make the plaster thicker, to yougurt, and then peanut butter. 2. After your first few thin splash coats, add some hemp, or burlap-or even strands of fiberglass. This will help it from breaking, holding it all together much better. If you happen to accidentally drop the entire thing, large chunks wont break off, the hemp/burlap will hold it nicely together allowing repairs to be made much easier. 3. When you pour up plaster all at once, the exterior will set before the interior, leaving the middle with trapped moisture that can leech out later and ruin the piece entirely, if not properly cured through. Thicker the pour, longer the cure, and weaker the final result without any supporting materials added. 4. Durhams is a great substitute for plaster that will set harder. Mixed with plaster, you will get something akin to dental plaster, which is used to cast moulds of your mouth, and sculpt dental appliances out of. Exterior splash coats can be done in Durhams, or a mix with plaster for harder exteriors, and back filled with normal plaster

Re the glue... you could try a polyurethane glue. e.g. Sikabond Techgrip. It sets quickly and is not too expensive. It will bond most anything to eps/xps foam, sintra, palfoam etc without melting the foam. It's not fast grabbing, but you could always just temporarily fasten rock pieces to underhangs etc. using pins. Regards.

When layering some of that plaster after putting up some of the side walls, it would be easier, cleaner and faster to put plaster into sandwich baggie, cut small hole in one corner and pipe it on like you would decorating a cake and smooth with fingers from other hand instead spooning it on. Just an idea from a baker and soap maker who pipes quite often. Great job BTW!!!

Hey there, great work. They have PL300 Foam Board Adhesive that is made for foam. It may work out a bit better for some of your projects. Hot glue will melt foam, so it may be best to avoid that. Plaster of Paris is fast, but not super resilient (if your piece is going to me moved around much). Dental Plaster is harder, which is often better for smaller pieces too (such as dungeon tiles). Your set is massive, so I'm not sure how that would change things. I don't know if you have tried Mod Podge on any of your works. It's a good base coat (that can even be mixed with Acrylic paint) that really seals and hardens the model. It's used by a few other makers - if you want some examples look up Black Magic Craft (he uses lots of foam sets). 10:15 - 10:28 background vocals on your audio ;)

Ah good advice in there. I'll take a look at some PL300. And yeah, someone else recommended dental plaster as well. I'll try modge podge as a base coat or as a sealant. Does it obscure some of the smaller detail in the foam/plaster being a little thicker as it is?

So I don't know how this trick plays with plaster but the cyanoacrylate gel covered in a layer of baking soda makes very nice sand for mini bases it even gets little ripples and could be very good for beach sand or or to cover with a blue or blue green tinted resin for the shallows.

There are tutorials on KZbin for how to make your own hot wire cutter for minimal cost (just a 9v battery, piece of wire or cheap/used guitar string, and a homemade frame). I've got an upright cutter which my wife bought me for a present 😁 which is perfect for straight vertical lines, and probably much better than any I could build myself, but a free-hand cutter like the one in the video is simple enough that even I could probably make one (and I'm not exactly a genius when it comes to electronics...).

Algorithm just brought me to you, and I am so glad it did! Love this project. Liked and subbed. A good quick grab glue you could try is E6000. Its also clear which can be nice. It can grab a part pretty much instantly and stays flexible a bit when cured. Its good stuff. I do think the hot glue gun would work as well, even on the plaster.

Hot glue works great as long as you're careful, too much high temperature glue on the foam will melt it, learned that the hard way 😅

Gotcha. Sticks on solid long term? I remember it always breaking up after a while. I made a wreath for Christmas with it back in grade six and I remembering it not lasting the following year. Could have taken a bit of a beating in storage I guess though... Left a bad taste in my mouth anyway. Especially for smooth hard surfaces I feel it just breaks off too easily. I suppose I should just get a hot glue gun though and try it out again. Have you had issues with glued parts breaking off?

@@RealTerrainHobbies i haven't accept for very small pieces, such as a foam chimney top that was giving me trouble, other than that, nothing! The tavern i made with almost exclusively hot glue on foam stays together quite well (even being transported in a cardboard box in the back of a car.) Added bonus, quick drying, keeping that work flow in motion! Definitely grab a glue gun for like 5 or 10 bucks at your local michaels, totally worth it in my eyes! (Ps sorry for the slight rant lol)

Late to the game! Have you considered using an expanding foam for the core of your larger builds instead of the xps? I've used it in molds and freeform. Sets up fairly quickly (about an hour from can to solid), is sand-able and carve-able, light and reasonably strong, though I wouldn't use it for making joists! I haven't yet tried to discover exactly how much volume you can fill from a single can, but I think it would at least equal a single 3" thick xps sheet.

Do you have any alternatives to the Lepage PL premium glue that you use? I'm in the EU and can't find it anywhere. Only US based sites have it and shipping + VAT or import charges are criminal on those cases. ATM I use gorilla glue but it expands and is a pain in the butt to use, tbh. Would love an alternative that doesn't melt XPS foam. :(

Thanks, Yeah I've tried it but the results just aren't as nice as what you get out of these molds and they feel a little off for my taste. But they're definitely a great solution if you just cant get your hands on some molds and want the next best thing! Thanks for the suggestion :)

so question re. the fumes: obviously you want to avoid as much bad stuff as possible, so a respirator is great regardless. but i've heard/read the white smoke coming off that xps is water vapor (since you're basically melting it), and the "bad" smoke is if it starts burning and is black?

Well I'm not sure about that. I've never smelled water vapor like that, a strong chemical smell, and I don't think XPS is infused with water. I know water vapor is released in say the combustion of wood, but not so sure with petroleum products. I'm sure its a vapor of some sort, but I highly doubt there's water. But, if so there is still most definitely other chemical vapors being released in the melting process which you can attest to strictly from the smell. The severity of the chemical vapors I would a degree is up for debate, sure. But here's where I'm coming from on this. I work in the construction industry and am exposed to various dust, solvent vapors etc etc to various degrees all through the lifetime of my career. There has been studies conducted and they show a blue collared worker, especially those in the trades or factory setting, has a shorter lifespan than those of the white collar or outside the construction/factory industries. So it's been my priority to lessen my exposure to ANY and such harmful chemicals and dust (silica/concrete dust is extremely harmful as well) as much as possible as it all builds up in our systems over time. Again, I am extremely skeptical of these vapors being harmless. Maybe less so than the black smoke, but I would still label it as something to avoid and an unnatural exposure to our body which absorbs directly into our bloodstream through our lungs, and that is something I would rather not have occur. At the very least, I'd put on a fan and have it dissipate and dilute into the air rather than breath in the heavier concentrations close to where they're being release. No apologies needed! I appreciate the insight and where you're coming from. Better safe than sorry, so I'm totally with you taking precautions. I'm just getting my feet wet with building with foam, and I don't think I'd be doing any cutting w/ a wirecutter anytime soon, but like being informed if the day ever comes. Hell when I get to actually cutting it w/ just a knife I'll prob put on a dust-mask, every little bit of safety helps in my eyes. But I guess that's a good follow-up question: what about just slicing with a knife? Do you use anything or does the foam cut clean enough nothing dust wise really gets in the air?

Ah, an excellent question. Well, at the risk of sounding cliche and predicable, I'm still going to have to pick Gandalf.😛 I love the image of the old and wise "good" wizard, out in the world laboring to keep the innocent protected and ignorant to the deeper and ancient evils of the world. He just fits that picture well. Probably Merlin from the Disney "The Sword In the Stone" movie (and folklore but I'm not totally up to speed on the actual myth or Merlin) fits this picture too, which was my first intro to a wizard I'm thinking. Pug, from the Raymond Feist books is also another really good one one, although he is quite young throughout most of the books. But, the wise old man with all his knowledge and secrets yet still striving to protect and do good is my fave. So I suppose Gandalf fits it best. How about you? I'm interested to hear about some recommended books I've never read or heard of!

Gandalf is certainly my favorite as well; I like the idea that despite him being this eternal Maiar locked in a battle of good and evil, he still takes time to hang out with hobbits and do fireworks :) I'd also say Merlin from the BBC TV show where he's a young man and always having to save Arthur from getting himself killed-- as cheesy as that show was, his character cracked me up, especially in later seasons when he learns a spell to disguise himself as an old man and becomes the crotchety old Merlin we all know and love!

I know nothing, but is it really worth it to make all the rock molds? Won't it be way easier and to just slap on the plaster and just use your tools to make rock formations? Thanks for the Epicness, can't wait to se the next video!

Yeah trust me, the molds are definitely the way to go. You can cover more surface area with more detail in much less time. You could try some samples yourself if you're still skeptical, but I'm holding fast to the molds.

I'm watching this and I'm amazed it looks great but my question as a new DM do you just use this once and done? Like do you create an encounter based on this terrain? How long does your encounter last? An hour? 2 hours? I'm just trying to justify spending hours on a project for only an hour of play.

Well for gaming specifically, I'm not sure but probably a good finale encounter to a campaign. For me the enjoyment comes from the process of modelling and just having the piece, rather than getting a ton of game play out of it. This specific build in particular that is, not Everything that I make or will make. For all of you, the techniques I go over can be applied to many of your pieces that are more practical. This is a bit of a showpiece and just a cool project I really wanted to attempt for the channel specifically. And Yeah, as @Train Jackson said, it can be used many times in the future as well.

Man, I'm absolutely blown away by the quality of your builds. Kinda curious to know how much the final piece weighs. :-) Might I suggest that you mute the audio from your recordings? Since you're already doing a voice-over and have background music, it's just noise. I think the sound of the Proxxon cracked one of my teeth. :-D Also, it's great that you're showing some additional info on the scrolls, but the tilt animation makes it kinda hard to read - had to pause the video. Other than that, the production is great. Great flow, storytelling, video and audio quality. Can't wait for the next episode! :-)

Thanks for the feedback. First time I haven't and thought I'd try leaving it in as something new to add to the feeling the viewer was more there and closer to the building process. If you found it just distracting instead good to know and appreciate the feedback.👍 Also good to know on the scrolls. Ill maybe try slowing the animation down in the future if I can, although that might make it a bit choppy. I like my scrolls😁

Never tried it before but I like the look of these plaster forms quite a bit. have you done any rock type terrain pieces with tree bark yourself? Did you get some decent results?

I haven't used it on such a large volume, cliff faces-rock boulders, but on miniature bases. The several layers on a piece of tree bark resemble nicely a rocky texture, like flakes of flagstone. It is lighter than plaster and also FREE.
