My biggest tip is PATIENCE. I was ready to throw in the towel after 4 days of drinking, eating and power pumping.... it works, but it can be hard work! You've got this! And if it doesn't work, you're not a failure. However you feed your baby, you're doing great ❤️❤️

One of the best things for me was getting enough sleep and trying to relax. When I stressed out about my milk supply and started not sleeping enough to pump and power-pump, I was actually failing at seeing results. Only when I started to nap with the baby I noticed my milk production increasing. Also, the tips of water intake and eating are very true! So, relax, sleep, eat and drink and power-pump in-between, but be sure to get some sleep.

You are absolutly right. Sleep is very important for milk supply. Because our body make more milk when we are sleeping.

These are good recommendations. But one thing I had hoped you'd address is the fact that a lot of women think they need to increase their supply when in reality their supply is fine. Lots of women think they don't make enough milk when they actually do. Baby's diaper output, weight gain, and general health tell you way more about your supply than things like how much you pump, baby's fussy behavior, baby's sleeping pattern, whether or not baby guzzles down a bottle after nursing, etc.

I was one of the unfortunate ones that wasn't able to produce an adequate supply. I was only making 1 preemie sized bottle a day, even after taking Domperidome, a medication meant to increase my supply. I had to supplement with formula. I think it was the stress, lack of sleep & not drinking enough water that affected it. Hopefully these tips help for the one on the way!

I’m a mom of 2. I exclusively breastfed my first born for 13 months. And I’m currently exclusively pumping for my 6 week old baby. What I found has worked for me increase my supply this time around is making sure I pump between the hours of 1am-5am. SLEEP, EAT, REPEAT (breastfeed/pump 2-3hours) Also, showers REALLY helped me lactate. After I would shower, I was basically RUNNING to my pump as I would be dripping like crazy the second I stepped out. Even when I would clean the shower for two minutes, something about the hot steam really made me swell up! 🍼

Gatorade, tons of water and the Hakaah helped my milk supply so much! Using the hakaah on the opposite breast while breastfeeding helped empty both boobs which then helped my body produce more. Also, you can store that and help with your freezer stash. I also pumped sometimes immediately after feeding to make sure I was fully empty and I pumped in between feedings to build my freezer stash, by the end of month three I had so much in the freezer, it no longer fit so I was able to donate my milk for around 6 months:) I hope this helps someone out there, and if you have any questions, let me know! I breastfed for a year and found that feeding on demand and staying very hydrated did the trick. I read about 'breastfeeding vacations' where every so often you just spend the day in front of the tv or in bed and just feed, feed, feed. @taabbym
@taabbym 8 ай бұрын
It has been incredibly helpful for me to gulp down drink a large cup of water right before each feed, + snacking on something like a nut bar, oatmeal bar, protein bar, etc during feeds. Something small, even if it’s a little bowl of berries. That way you never feel hungry throughout the day and you’re plenty hydrated. Specifically, I feel very engorged some hours after eating oat products like oatmeal or oatmilk and granola cereal. So I recommend incorporating oats into your diet in some way, daily. I’m exclusively breastfeeding and now have lots of oversupply in the freezer which my baby hasn’t needed yet. No bottles used so I’m not sure what to do with it all yet but I believe the routine of breastfeeding about every 2 hours all day long plus the tips I mentioned helped me get here.

I am a surgeon, wanting to have kids. I am still in my residency but 31yo. Can you talk about the work/life balance as doctors as well and how you decided when to have a kid? Thanks
@jadelightsword
@jadelightsword 3 жыл бұрын
Having a kid in residency is tough. I'm a peds hospitalist, and decided to start my family years into my attending life, because I knew I wanted a long maternity leave. I'm still < 35, since my training is shorter than yours, but I did end up needing to see a fertility specialist to get pregnant (just ovulation induction, no IVF or anything more involved for me). On the other hand, I will get 6 months total of leave, and am at a better place financially. How important is leave to you? How about time to breastfeed and pump? Basically all the doctor moms I know weren't able to continue breastfeeding much longer after they went back to work, your supply just dries up, and I imagine you're not going to get much time to pump during surgical residency. And then what about just time with your new baby? Balance that with the importance of your career, and how much help you will get from family. Not any easy decision, good luck!

I am a surgical resident as well, and just had a baby in residency. I have to say that the most important thing in terms of work/life balance assist surgical resident and parent, heavily relies on having a great support system. At least for me, that is what has made the difference. I also talked in depth with my program director, in terms of maternity leave, and was able to get the most amount of time I could. Is it a challenge, yes, is it doable, yes. And I am glad I went back to you. For reference, I am 32 years old.

Having kids in residency is tough. I had my first at the end of my OB/GYN residency in April. Thankfully when I got back to work, I only had a few weeks left before finishing, but it still was hard. Whenever I got pregnant, I talked with my program director and my co-chief residents to help with scheduling. I had a ton of call leading up to delivery and all of the more intense rotations before I had my baby so that I could be on easier rotations when I came back. It is so important to have an open line of communication with your co-workers and program leadership if you do decide to have a baby in residency. Additionally, having a supportive partner and splitting responsibilities with them helps tremendously. My husband is a master bottle and pump part washer now 🤪

I have never had supply issues, yet from the beginning I’ve had lactation consultants and midwives and people on the internet telling me to pump all the time in addition to feeding my baby, and do all this stuff to increase supply or I’ll risk not having enough. Then last week I went to see my midwife who got back from being away and I told her my boobs were hurting a lot, and she was like “why are you pumping so much? You’re probably overdoing it..” like, there is SO MUCH pressure to do all this stuff. I’m exclusively breastfeeding my baby and he’s gaining a tonne of weight, there is no reason I should feel like a lazy failure for not pumping so much I produce enough milk for two babies, I only have the one. So now I have a freezer full of milk for no reason, and a clogged duct and painful boobs.. I think people should maybe not get into all this unless there’s a problem. Women did this for a long time before breast pumps were invented. My mom didn’t own one and she was perfectly able to feed us.

You couldn’t have uploaded this at a better time. I am almost 7 weeks pp. I am pumping. I kept saying “at two months I’m transitioning to formula”. I was sick of always pumping & get just enough for each feeding. But as 2 months creeps up (sooo fast 🥺) I look at my son and think “if I have something he needs & that benefits him, I’m his mommy and I should be giving it to him”.. I just can’t allow myself to just stop so soon. I sometimes have to supplement with formula in the middle of the night, if I can’t pump quick enough. And I HATE doing it. I can tell he doesn’t like it as much, it smells awful (& tastes awful.. I’ve tried both formula and my breast milk). If he spits up after formula it also smells awful. I just can’t bring myself to fully transition just yet. Aside of feeling I should be giving him what he needs, it’s also an attachment thing I have with him. It’s hard to explain. Thank you for these tips. I’ll be trying them ♥️

Hey mama! I transitioned to formula completely and 2.5-3 months postpartum. I struggled a lot with supply ( less the 1oz total a day!) anyways I feel that struggle of if I can give I should. My family ( me, husband and newborn 2weeks old) all got Covid and my supply took a hit which is why I couldn’t produce any more than what tiny bit I had. BUT I was able to provide him antibodies for Covid ( he had no symptoms) once I decided to formula feed and put him to breast if he wanted a “snack” or comfort I felt sooooo much better. I had to mourn the fact that my feeding journey wasn’t what I wanted but in the end me and my boy are healthy and happy. Don’t feel bad for supplementing for a time ( or transitioning completely) but maybe look into other gentle formulas that might take better while you build up your supply ( if that’s your goal) But don’t feel guilty mama- you are doing the best you can and that’s what matters! Good luck mama!

I pump as well and I’m about 9 weeks PP and I have not had to supplement yet but my supply lately has taken a bit of a tank plus my baby has needed to increase the amount he eats I pump just enough for him in a session and have some in the freezer (not a lot but some) but it stresses e out that if I loose any I won’t have enough. Here is what I find works for me so I don’t have to struggle to pump when baby is hungry and it will just be ready for him, always be a feed ahead. Even if your just making enough try squeezing an extra pump in or if you have anything in the fridge/freezer give the baby that so when you pump that can be put aside for the next time he eats and so on and so on. It gives me peace of mind so when my baby is hungry (he starts crying almost instantly after starting to show hunger cues) I have it ready for him. Then after he finishes it I pump for the next one. Also idk if your baby is sleeping thru the night yet but I’ve found that since he started sleeping thru the night about a week ago that when I still do my night pumps it’s just extra for me to put away and store for later.

I exclusively pump and noticed that my supply dips when I’m not hydrated or fed enough (duh), if I’m stressed or uncomfortable, and generally in the middle of the day (predictably). Whenever I have issues, I use my Lavie massager, warm up my boobs (I like the Lansinoh gel hot/cold packs), perform compressions during pumping, and use the Hakaa on the opposite boob. Since my breasts are extremely large, I can only pump one side at time but it gives me plenty of dexterity to work on the one breast to push out any clogs. I will say to be very careful with the Hakaa because it can overstimulate your breasts and cause you to overproduce. Don’t use it every time unless you need it. As an exclusive pumper and pitcher method user, I’d love to see some content geared to that. If you aren’t sure yourself, maybe you can collaborate with someone (maybe a zoom meeting)? I think a lot of breastfeeders/chestfeeders are completely unaware of the EP world and don’t even realize it’s an option. For me, it has been a lifesaver since BF was causing me so much undue stress.

@phr00tsnax
@phr00tsnax 2 жыл бұрын
@@yvonnehernandez2498 The hakaa works by suction, so it’s not like a traditional manual pump that you physically need to squeeze a handle over and over to pull out milk. When I was producing, I was wearing a 36F. I couldn’t use any true nursing bras or pumping bras because nothing would fit right. I also have very flat nipples. When I was BF, I needed to use the hakaa first to pull out the nipple AND a nipple shield to get my baby to latch. I would also use it on the other side while my son fed so I could catch the letdown. Once I switched to exclusive pumping, I would pump one side and let the hakaa dangle on the other, but I had so many issues with it falling off once it was halfway full. I ended up buying a strap that would wrap around it and I’d wear around my neck. Can’t tell you how much crying over spilt milk I did until I found that stupid thing lol. Anyway, it would help catch letdown, pull out clogs, and allow me to use both hands to compress the pumping breast so I could get all the milk out. Without it, I was constantly getting clogs.

I’m almost 2 week’s postpartum and my baby is a preemie born at 29 weeks. My supply has plummeted over the last couple days. I wasn’t producing a ton to begin with because I just started. I’m going to try these tips and hopefully it helps.

@@mariange88 slightly yes. I realized that I had to let my body do what it’s going to do. I’m 8 weeks postpartum and getting maybe 2-4 oz combined (before I was getting an ounce max) and I’m doing nothing extra just pumping and breastfeeding once a day at the hospital.

@@adyasams9081 I am 2 weeks postpartum and struggling with breastfeeding so have only been pumping. Had a very slight delay in starting to pump regularly. I’m also producing about 1 Oz max combined per pumping session right now. And was wondering if that’s within what’s “normal” for this stage. Been waiting for it to increase since my baby already eats a lot more than I can produce even in one session (have to supplement with formula)

Virgin beer and the right sized flanges. I was struggling as an exclusively pumping parent with building a simple 24h supply in the first 6 weeks they tell you not to pump. Exept the baby is not taking the breast alright on account of heavy gynecomastia that hospital staff could not handle and even at home I couldn't, especially not at night, you know what I mean. However, tweaking my flanges and finding the right size as well as some non alcoholic beer (and I've some oatmeal cereals now that you mention it maybe that helped) probably saved me as I'm now in a good middle spot of 12h advance supply. Baby really does not feed at set hours, sometimes will wake up every 3 or every 4h, and the 3 weeks growth spurt was definitely the killing blow on that supply so much we had to spend an entire day feeding them store bought, not that it's wrong, but it's not our project for our baby and it made me feel terrible. And feeling terrible in face of my low prod was terrifying and I think it also affected my supply! Take a step back, relax. See your doctor if it keeps happening and investigate post partum depression, it's definitely going to help with more than your baby's food

Fenugreek powder every morning with a glass of milk or water helped me to increase my supply. On top of that I eat Oatmeal for breakfast and oatmeal snacks. I did this with my first baby and doing the same for 2nd as well. Every individual is different might woke on some might not on others.

Hello! I have an almost 3 week old newborn and I'm noticing my supply going down. BUT, I am aware that it IS because of me being inconsistent with my pumping. I went hard for the first week and pushed myself way too hard, this c section took alot out of me and this is My second son, but my FIRST time sticking to breast feeding + pumping for more than 1 week!!! My question is how often a day/weekly should I be power pumping, I never knew about that and I'm totally with it! Tonight I'm going to be back on my pumping every 2 to 3 hours and I want to incorporate power pumping asap! Also, it makes me feel better to hear that I should be putting Bubba on the boob ad much as possible! The past couple days have been rough, I've been sitting here thinking he's on it too much! This is all so new to me, I'm amazed by what our bodies do for ourselves and for our babies. Pray for me yall. This is definitely one of the hardest things I've done 😂❤

This hopefully helps me with my diminishing milk supply. Eating more & consuming lactation supplements like lactation cookies/chocolate mix/tea are NOT helping me that much and is just putting on more pounds on the scale lol, but definitely the emptying of breasts and pumping in lots of water seem to help. I have tried power pumping 2 weeks ago aftrr reading from pinterest blogs and it did help! My mistake was I only did it for one day because I didn't know that you should do it daily for a week (and it wasn't mentioned in the articles). I will definitely try this once a day for a week and hopefully it will work!🙏🙏🙏 thank you in advance ☺

Are you eating, sleeping and drinking enough? Also keeping stress in check is important. My Dr recommended pumping after each feed to empty the breast fully as baby's latch is too weak. Just make sure to pump the side of breast baby just ate from. Good luck and hang in there. I went from 10ml to 60ml of milk in 1 week, baby is still underweight but it's important to keep going!

I just want to put this information out there because I truly believe it saved my baby's life. When I had my daughter we got off to a rocky start.. I had a traumatic 32 hour labor followed by an emergency c section topped off with a hemorrhage where I lost over half of my blood supply and took 3 bags of blood. Please don't be frightened first time moms to be, this is not the normal experience! And just know if I got through it you can too! But anyway I was extremely dehydrated while in the hospital, I was there for 7 days and they gave me lots of TLC and IV fluid and some plasma as well. but after going through something like that your body just needs time. So long story short ish I was not producing anything! I had to resort to formula with the hope of breastfeeding once I recovered. Well unfortunately she never took to my breast after that, I had a lot of professional help, but it just wasn't happening.. so instead I pumped and I managed to keep it up for four months. But sadly without the direct stimulation from my baby my milk supply went from barely keeping up to drying up! That's when we started formula feeding 😑 it's all basically garbage.. at first my baby showed signs of a cow's milk allergy, her father is sensitive too, so we tried the various "gentle" formulas and then the non dairy.. Soy is the devil if you ask me, my poor baby was so backed up and when she finally passed a stool it was hard as a rock! You couldn't smash it it was a truly rock solid and she was in so much pain. Finally through desperation I saw a different formula on the shelf, enfamil A2 I looked it up on my phone while I was standing there and found out that milk has two different type of protein, A2 the orginal and A1 which our cows in the US started producing when they bred them to be bigger in order to produce more. Most European cows still only produce A2 and there are still A2 cows in the US but most formulas are made with A1. A2 is much easier for the body to breakdown and digest, A1 is not for some people, I can tolerate A1 but my husband, our daughter and my mother in law cannot tolerate it. I got the A2 formula and it changed my baby's life! She is happy and strong, she's a healthy weight now where before she was dropping weight like crazy. I've also found A2 milk at the grocery store in the section with almond milk, my husband and mother in law are now drinking milk for the first time in 12 years. If you are a struggling formula mom look into A2 it just might do the trick. Gerber has an A2 formula, so does enfamil, I use the enfamil, simulac also has one.. but I honestly don't like simulac.

Hi, this video really helps. My baby is 4.5 weeks old, my milk supply hasn’t increased much yet. I started with SNS or bottle formula too up + pumping then doing more direct feeding + bottle top up. Not sure how much he gets from my breast, he starts then falls asleep after 5 mins. I try to wake him up and keep him under my breasts for 15 mins. He seems to be more alert when he’s bottle fed. If my milk supply isn’t increasing from him not sucking enough. I don’t know what to do next. (First few weeks, I triple fed him, breast for 10-15 mins - top up - pump, no changes on milk production). Any recommendations?

My baby fell asleep instantly at the breast and that way she didn't drink, so I had to use formula. It is a bit better now that she is almost three weeks old, but she is still hungry after breastfeeding. If I breastfeed her each time she cries, offer both breasts, then have to give her formula afterwards anyway, I don't do anything else the whole day. That's why it is so frustrating that the breastpump doesn't work for me. I am so close to giving up, because milk supply doesn't seem to get better, power pumping is not an option because nothing comes out, and if I'm not able to have 2 hour feeding sessions multiple times a day and therefore sometimes only use formula then immediately the milk supply tanks. My doctor just tells me DoN't GiVe Up. Any tips appreciated

Do I need to add the extra calories to maintain this excess weight or do the extra calories come from my fat stores. I'm not actively trying to lose weight rapidly but like you, I also struggle to eat throughout the day and I can't think of eating EXTRA. I've been losing weight slowly as a result and my milk supply is great. Little on the over supply side.

Another question is first to feed the baby, and you said wait an hour and then do power pump. Why not do power pump right after you feed the baby? Let’s say I just fed the baby and wait an hour and pump for another , so when the power pump is done, baby is time to wake up for another feed time again. Where comes from the milk then?

Thanks for sharing these great tips! Breastfeeding was polar opposites for our girls and we had such a difference experience with both. These tips are super practical and helpful for something that can be incredibly stressful for a new Mom!

I plan on having gastric sleeve and trying to get pregnant after around 2 years. Would I be able to have a regular birth center birth? Or would I be considered high risk and have to go to the hospital?

I hope I get a response, if I try to pump like this, by the time evening comes I’m empty and she can’t get anything out and it’s just awful. 😞
