I would like a video also but from What I’ve read it’s very similar with caffeine, such a small percentage gets into the milk that it’s fine. I’ve definitely not given up coffee for the 11 months I’ve been BF!

I'm so happy to have learned this info!! All great options. Option 4: pump before you drink so you can store the milk for when baby is ready to eat! And that way, by the time baby is ready to eat again, the alcohol is already out of your body!

@@emilwandel Liquor is quite literally a poison. Certain fruit and fruit juices do contain trace amounts of naturally occurring alcohol, but they also have health benefits, so at least there is a reason to consume them. It makes zero sense to consume alcoholic drinks, knowing that it could be passed to the baby. Better to be extra careful, because why not? Does that satisfy your snarky response?

I had one cocktail and it hit me so hard! After close to a year with strictly zero alcohol, watch out for your tolerance, ladies! Only one partner should drink that night so the other can care for Baby. And do not cosleep when impaired!

Just want to highlight for those parents who are right at the beginning, still doing night feeding, up to your neck in sleep deprivation, that your tolerance may be a lot lower than you remember after nine months sober. Even if the breastfeeding is safe, falling asleep when you don't mean to is an increased possibility after a drink or two. Just my two cents, but in those first few months, I'd go all in on the sushi/soft cheese/deli meat/etc, but my partner and I wouldn't both drink on the same night. That way, one of us was ready for the night shift.

This, and cosleeping parents should never sleep next to their baby after drinking. A lot of parents sleep with their babies on occasion, if not all the time, whether they admit to it or not, and it becomes wayyyy more dangerous when alcohol is involved.

I'm really thankful for this video! I wasn't too worried about alcohol intake and breastfeeding, but this information helps put any worries to rest. I'm such a lightweight after going 9 months without a drink I doubt I could handle three in an hour, haha. That being said, I often wait to have an alcoholic beverage after I put my 10 month old to bed for the night. If I'm at a gathering where I want to partake, I'll split the drink with my husband. Otherwise I try not to stress too much about it - sometimes Mama needs a glass of red wine with dinner to reward herself and that's okay! ☺

This video is great! It's really informative and I'm really glad to see that there are people talking about this because talking about it breaks outdated stigma. I'm pregnant now, but when I'm breastfeeding I plan on enjoying a glass of wine if I'm out to dinner with my husband. However, I know that I still can't do that around my own family because I would never hear the end of it no matter how much data and information I give them on it. So, its great to hear people talking about it!

I’ve tried to breastfeed my baby right before a drink then wait 2 hours, but then the baby of course always surprised me and wanted to breastfeed right after. :) Finally opted to just not drink while breastfeeding… erring on the side of caution. Thank you for making the video - definitely educational and makes me feel better about the times I have breastfed my baby after having a drink.

It's nice to enjoy a wine with friends and family, and we've certainly earned it!

I don’t regret abstaining from alcohol the vast majority of the time while breastfeeding, but I am feeling a lot better about those nights where I had one drink after baby went to bed and he either slept long enough for the alcohol content in my milk to be completely insignificant before his next feed, or those nights when he woke up much sooner and I worried not enough time had passed since my one glass of wine or beer. Thank you!

While breastfeeding it’s important to eat from all areas of the nutrient pyramid. It is essential to eat 3 meals a day. While breastfeeding you are still feeding for 2. Protein, whole grain, healthy fats. Eggs make baby gassy. Caffeine is okay. Milk makes baby spit up a lot, so try soy milk as an alternative. Spicy makes baby spit up Breakfast : Oatmeal w/ banana Snack: apple Lunch: chicken sandwich w/ chips Snack: oatmeal cookies Dinner: burger w/ fries

In the 14 months I was breastfeeding my daughter I only drank a handful of times (like at a Christmas party and at a wedding). What I felt most comfortable with was feeding my baby right before drinking, only having one drink, and then not feeding my baby again for at least 2 hours after my last sip of alcohol. If my baby got hungry again before the 2 hours was up, I would feed her a bottle and then pump later to maintain my supply (and replace in my freezer stash what she had eaten earlier in the bottle) once the alcohol was out of my system.

Wow this is so good to know, i think it’s so important to be responsible with drinking around any babies or children, if you were out of sorts and something happens and you couldn’t take care of your baby, how awful would that feel… but also freeing to know that if your having a few drinks with a friend at dinner and have to breastfeed your baby within a hour or a few hours after it’s not going to have a great impact as long as your not doing this on the regular and being responsible within ur tolerance. Every mamma deserves to let loose every now and then, we are so stinking busy and give so much! for me it was during the holidays, one thing not mentioned I don’t think was eating changes the levels in ur blood alcohol levels or not?

Of course it depends a lot on how much you can tolerate and it makes total sence that inadequate parent posses a risk to the baby, i have friends who are done after a glass of beer, and for some 7 is nothing🤷‍♀️. Fun fact, my best friend in Sweden was served prosecco and caviar after giving birth in hospital in Sweden😍 I didn't get that in Canada but overall approach to pregnancy and postpartum goodness is quite chill here and I'm loving it😅

I would love to know in what situations pumping and dumping would be recommended. Also the effects of other drug classes on breastmilk. I know there is a pregnancy category given to each medication, would that correlate with the safety in breastfeeding? In my experience, most providers will not even consider prescribing medications while breastfeeding that fall in pregnancy categories C or D. Is there a recognized drug safety rating for medications while breastfeeding? I know this was hard to navigate with postpartum anxiety/depression while breastfeeding. I’ve had trouble navigating the evidence around these topics. Thank you for your content! It is so helpful! ❤

Can you site the source for that please? I can't find any studies on high alcohol consumption and you said earlier if blood alcohol content was .4% (comatose) the baby still would barely be getting trace amounts, equivalent to orange juice.

Great video! One aspect of drinking with babies around that wasn't addressed though is the psychological one. You would probably need to be quite drunk before you fell down with the baby in your arms, but the microscopic changes to your way of interacting come way sooner, even when you're only a tiny bit tipsy. Babies are wired to be "hyperfocused" on how you interact with them, since they are entirely dependent on you, so they do notice that something is off when you are tipsy. These minute changes in their parents'/caretakers' behaviour cause them stress. So because of this I would still be quite careful with drinking when babies are around (this obviously doesn't only concern the breastfeeding mom but also the dad and any other adults who take care of the baby).

Good for you for sharing this. Its super interessanting for moms. And also brave of you because im sure you have gotten some judgement for this I drink and breastfeed. I have a glass or two of wine and still feed my baby. I did it with my first born as well and got so much judgement and criticism from my mom about it. And its hard because i def feel ashamed to admit it to other moms. But im not an alcoholic, im not drinking every night or getting drunk. I just enjoy a glass of wine with my steak or after a hard day work or at a family get together. In the summer its about 3 or 4 nights a week ill have a couple glasses and in the winter just some weekends. Such judgement just makes it harder for breastfeeding moms to keep up on it. Moms are just people, we're not perfect. My family has a lot of gatherings/parties with alcohol and its not enjoyable to skip drinking at every single get together. These high standards we have make it harder for moms to keep up breastfeeding, and at the end of the day breastfeeding for as long as you can is the best for the baby. I honestly think these ridiculous standards were created by formula companies to try to make breastfeeding as inconvenient as possible for new moms. Thank you for the OJ fact!!! Def will be sharing that with my mom!!!! 😂 I already knew that breastmilk alcohol content was same as blood level. My big question is tho: if its 2-3 hours a glass of wine until ur system is clear, does that mean you tech should wait 9 hours after 3 glasses??? And when does the countdown start? From the last sip of alcohol you had or the first?!?!
@ktcarter7626

Def would add, i read that babies livers only start processing alcohol from 3 months onward, so maybe best to even avoid the 0.02 level alcohol in milk if baby cant process it!!!

Great video, thank you so much for all the research you do for these videos and sharing them! I have one question: breastmilk is continuously being made. If I have 3 shots in five minutes and then wait for like three hours until the alcohol is cleared from my blood, will it also be cleared from the milk that I already made 30-60 minutes after taking the shots?

Please do a video about the rising rates of alcoholism in millennial women. It's really important that we highlight the stress families are under and the dangers of alcohol dependency forming.

Hey, thanks for the video. We have been told the same by pediatrician and obstetrician as well. I have been looking for the data you are talking about. Can you point out some studies or databases ?

Maybe I don't know where it is, but it would be really helpful if you all provided links to the studies cited in the video. Thanks for the information!

Do the 2-3 hours start when you finish your drink? Or when you first start drinking? Does the pace you drink your drink affect these times and numbers?
