So many people buy fish/aquatic animals because they think they’re easy to care for when that’s not the truth. For example so many people buy betta fish and just stick them in a bowl. Betta fish need a minimum 5 gallon tank( preferably 10gallon), they need proper filtration and heating system, silk or real plants to not tear their fins, not to mention weekly water changes and good quality food cause they don’t have the best digestion system. A betta fish can last over 5 years if taken of properly. All pets deserve the best care, whether it’s a dog or a fish 🐠

We have a small private pet store in the town I live in and I see those little betta fish in those small bowls and I don't know much about them except not to stick my hand in the bowl but I think all fish need room to swim not just float in the water. Thank you for sharing your fish knowledge with us.

Fish can remember faces for 5+ years, can learn tricks, and show affection, so the question is - why don’t more people care? Pet Stores are as bad as breeders, and have no business operating an industry based on abuse, so why do they get to continue operating? Why do we support this, and turn a blind eye? We should care about EVERY creature. It doesn’t matter if they are fish or cows, dogs or birds - they all deserve compassion, a healthy environment, and most of all, love. To the kind souls who helped these dear creatures, thank you. I truly hope your actions inspire others to do good, and helps to pass the kindness on🙏 ❤

The way that chain pet stores like Petco and Pet Smart treat Betta fish is horrendous. I can’t walk into their stores without my heart breaking. Bettas need at least a five gallon tank that’s kept around 78°F, with plenty of plants to hide in. They need a cycled tank too, most of all, like all fish.

Wow, I didn't know that they could do surgery on fish as small as a beta. I'm so curious as to what the procedure was that this one got. it seems obvious that these three women have a level of knowledge and skill with aquatic life that is beyond the average. These are three lucky little creatures, and I hope this sort of thing is happening all around the country. They really should be stopped from selling fish in these big pet supply and department stores. It's atrocious the kind of suffering they just allow to happen.
@mortalclown381211 ай бұрын
I'm fascinated - and moved - that folks care enough to make this kind of difference to a little fish. See a few folks are complaining, but the micro tells its own tale in this world. Learning more every day... and I'm old.
@AnimalisMD11 ай бұрын
I'm not an aquatic veterinarian (just dogs and cats) but I know that they can do things like growth removals and removing an eye that was diseased/injured. I can't see anything externally on the video, however. There are also tests you can do under sedation/anesthesia to determine if there's a parasitic disease (skin scape). They can also biopsy the fins and gills. That's about all I know when it comes to fish medicine. I do agree with no allowing sales of fish in pet stores and department stores. All too often I've had to point out sick looking fish to employees/managers. It also makes me angry to see Beta fish being kept in tiny containers.
@alisong232811 ай бұрын

@rosewangler688611 ай бұрын
@@AnimalisMD Well, it's a whole lot more than I knew, thank you very much, that's quite interesting. Yes, extremely aggravating, the beta thing. I had to quit going any place I would see those. Thank goodness I think that Walmart stopped doing it a while back, and maybe Petsmart too, I just avoid the fish department at Petsmart so I'm not sure. If you bought every beta that didn't look like it was doing well, you'd probably end up buying almost the entire batch every time, and then you wouldn't want to leave a few behind just because they aren't sick yet, stuck in those small containers. I also do not have the level of expertise as the young lady who rescued this one, so they might not fare any better in my care. One would certainly have to start finding them homes if one wanted to do "Beta Rescue". I'm so curious as to the different sorts of responses, you've gotten when you point out sick looking fish to managers and workers. I just really think that if they cared about the fish at all that they would notice for themselves. You probably get a wide spectrum of responses. They probably act concerned sometimes for your benefit, but I wonder if they ever actually do anything about it. Maybe they do, they probably have some basic medication's that they can try to use at least. Probably not what the fish needs, it probably needs a better environment and better nutrition. Speculation.

Wonderful work on behalf of these kind humans! When I was a kid, Mum was chatting to a neighbour when the cat across the road came sauntering down the street looking really proud of himself. He had something orange in his mouth. So mum went over to see, the cat panicked, dropped the thing and ran. He'd found a goldfish from somewhere (we never figured out where) and has carried it home. She was still alive, so mum threw the fish into her sunhat and ran into the house. We got a big basin of water and put the fish in it. She wasn't looking good..kept trying to float to the surface. She was missing tons of scales and her tail and fins were all ragged. We spent hours swirling the water around to help force it through her gills and it seemed to help, she wasn't floating to the surface as much. Then mum put a capful of whisky in the water (she'd heard some story about this working and we were desperate). You've never seen a dish perk up so fast! She recovered wonderfully after that. She grew her scales and fins back, and we had her for several years after that.

Eighteen years ago. My life was just two cats and a simple job at a local community college. But then one day. Something went odfdly wrong, and something went right. "Oh yes. But he's only a fish." Was what I was told at a garage sale. I was offered a tank, all its gear and six fish for free. I said sure. He dropped it all off and my family and I took in six sick fish. Along with all their kit and stuff. This took my life to a whole new level of insanity. And six very sick fish. I could have let it go south and let it all end there. Or I could go to work. So I named them all after Babylon 5 characters and got to work. They all lived for several more years with the last. Mister Garibaldi passing about six years ago. Some day these six fish were only just fish. Yet these six fiosh brought me hours of happiness. They looked after me and I looked after them.
