A bit I like about this movie is how Ma Ma and her crew have no idea who Dredd is. He's just a Judge to them, a rando. Because they wouldn't know. They run a small corner of an incomprehensible urban sprawl in a dystopian future. But the other Judges know. I enjoy that he's not some cheesy celebrity amongst this mass of decaying flesh and concrete. Only the other Judges are aware this dude is the Grim fucking Reaper. Ma Ma made an honest mistake. Karl Urban did a fantastic job as well, i believe there was an interview where he said he read a bunch of the comics to understand tge character, and one feature he noticed was Dredd never takes his helmet off, so, and i believe it was actually this scene, he was supposed to take his helmet off, but ge refused because it's not what the character would do, and actually got into an argument with the director over it, studios pay for the face, but he wanted to do the character right, and sense they were already behind schedule they just gave up and let him have his way, i learned this a good while ago and heard it all second hand so take it with a grain of salt, but i think there's at least a little truth in to it =P Real shame it didn't do better at the box office.

This was a character driven film, rather than actor driven, and I have infinite respect for Karl Urban for this role, as he's not really going to get much attention for it (ie: having only his mouth exposed, doesn't make for great exposure in an actors profile when advertising themselves for future roles). People like Stallone couldn't help but need their faces shown, but not good ol Karl. He was willing to work to incorporate himself into the role, not the other way around. It's commendable, and he's what you can call a true actor, someone focused on the role, rather than personal accolades
@TwistyMcFisty3 жыл бұрын
Karl Urban was apparently a fan of the comics, and stated that he would not have taken the role if he had to remove his helmet. it was important to him that he stay true to the character.
@InVinoVeratas3 жыл бұрын
@@TwistyMcFisty If only more actors were as willing to integrate, as fluently in a role, and as needed, to make the movie's theming more consistent. That certainly can't be said of Stallone, in the previous Judge Dredd role. This version feels more hopeless and nihilistic, which to me, fits the theming of an apocalyptic future, one in which we're unsure of even who the heroes are, as the rookie discovers at the end, she's left questioning if the judges are even the "good guys" when in the end, there is just morally grey decisions. Did Dredd do a justice throwing that drug-dealing, ex-prostitute who was previously a victim herself? Was she a bad person given the context of her praising? The environment she grew up in, made her into the person we see in the film, so it stands to reason, so, to some degree, she herself was a product of her environment. Though not all decisions were out of her hands, and she did choose to deal drugs, so there is moral ambiguity/dilemma there.

@@InVinoVeratas I doubt if that is the fault of Stallone if a studio pays for a large star they want them to have exposure and that probably means them not having their face covered the whole movie. The original one is one of my guilty pleasures but the flying law cycle was ridiculous and I wanted either to touch on the fact that people walked through mega city one and prayed that muggers didn't pick them and were relived when someone else was mugged instead of them, the second one is the only one that got even close to that feeling. In the first James Remar should have being the antagonist and it should have focussed on a block war kind of story.

It’ll make more sense to think that she had linked them. In that case, she wouldn’t need to send him a message; he’ll have just known that she was close.

So want a sequel for this. This was a true cyberpunk comic book come to life. Gritty, unapologetic, brutal, sad and funny with a sharp dose of satire. They don't make many of these anymore.

Even though Karl Urban would be considered "to old" today, years after this movie. He still could do a whole movie/series/episode/s when he took "The long walk" as a Judge!
@blethigg93202 жыл бұрын
In the comics Dredd is way older than Urban. Unlike most comic characters the writers allow Dredd to age and acknowledge it within the stories.

Lifelong fan of the comic here! I LOVED this adaptation. They got the sheer grittiness of the character and the Dredd Universe right and this lifted Karl Urban to one of my most respected actors, along with Henry Cavil. “Perps were … uncooperative” is such an absolute nugget of a Dredd quote.
@RandomAmerican30003 жыл бұрын
I saw a clip of this before I saw the movie. I originally thought he was asking for another ammo type when he said "two way split". And though it will likely fall on deaf ears, I too will say we need a sequel to this. Assuming they do as good of a job the second time.

Dredd is such a smooth badass in this scene. He lets the other guy talk and waste time but he himself says only what he needs to buy time, not even crying out when he gets shot, which would give away his position. He only reveals his plan after the other guy is already dead.
