The major appeal of comics - that you basically have an unlimited special effects budget and that you’re only constrained by your own imagination - is also a major hindrance to live action adaptations. While I like the TV show, I can’t help but wish they instead produced an animated series.

Slight correction, their robot mother gave them their names and 5 rejected his. Some theorize it’s a power play, so that when Reggie calls them by their numbers instead of their names he actually is referring to 5 by name.

You'll notice that Five is not in Paris. My assumption is Mother gave them name shortly before they debuted, since Hargraves didn't care about those things. And Five at that point was already in the future. Edit: I juts realized you meant the series, not the comic. (-‿-")

I forget, was it ever confirmed that Grace named them in the show as well? Because the explanation that Five disappeared before they were named isn't true in the show, since both Ben and Viktor had their names already. So maybe it's possible that they actually picked out their own names in the show? (TBH it would kinda work with Viktor's transition, since Vanya is apparently a masculine name.)

@@SploberrieVanya is a diminutive for any name with the syllable “van.” Usually Vanya is a nickname for Ivan. Ivana is the feminine version of Ivan (Ivanka is a nickname). The usual nickname for “Viktor” is Vitya. It’s not insane that you would use Vanya for Viktor, I think, it would just be confusing. Source: I have loved Russian nicknames for decades. They make names longer as they get more affectionate. Vanya > Vanushka/Vanenka > Vanenochka (if you want to get really cutesy).

Even from just an episode to episode storytelling perspective its incredibly bad. Most of the siblings get nothing to do (Luther and Diego for example spend multiple episodes in a CIA basement waiting for the ending to happen, Klaus exits the plot the second he is given the marigold and only comes back in the end, etc). And lets not to talk about how mean spirited the season is with some characters like, again, Diego, who is repeatedly called a fat useless moron for no reason. Then he gets a shirtless scene where he is all jacked, like did they forget they were calling him fat for multiple episodes?

"Takes place in a fundamentally different universe" seems like a pretty significant adaptational difference. Like writing a fanfic that's a coffeeshop AU.
@timothymclean
@timothymclean 2 ай бұрын
Bad analogy. You can write a Batman coffeeshop AU that still takes place in Gotham City. You can also write a conventional Batman story that takes place in Camelot, the cyberpunk future, Victorian England, the flooded future, or even a world of talking animals. I know this because all of those are real AU Batmen from official DC comics (Earth-9, Earth 12, Earth-19, Earth-31, and Earth C-, respectively). Any setting with crime and rich people who can occasionally be murdered by criminals can have a Batman, and a Joker, and a Riddler, and a Two-Face. Settings inform stories, but many stories can be transplanted into very different settings, so long as a few elements are kept in common.
@DoveJS
@DoveJS 2 ай бұрын
 @timothymclean Yeah but if you adapted any random Batman story and set it on Earth C- for Batmouse, from the Just'a Lotta Animals, that's a pretty significant difference because he's also an in-universe comic book character over on Earth C. Depending on when in the various DC timelines it's set, that could create a canonical interdimensional lawsuit within the narrative (I'm not kidding about that, it's a plot point in the revival plus it's funny AF IMHO.) Bare minimum you're gonna want Captain Carrot as a cameo because it would feel rude to exclude him. I'd hope these differences were significant.
@SimonCallahan
@SimonCallahan 2 ай бұрын
A small difference not mentioned is that Hazel and Cha-Cha switched names between comic and TV series. In the comic Cha-Cha is the one in the blue mask and Hazel is the one in the pink mask. Also, there's a spin-off mini-series comic dedicated specifically to Klaus that is absolutely unhinged. It takes place before the events of the first comic, and it shows Klaus going from heavy drinking (which was what he originally did to deal with his super powers) to hard drugs. The main antagonist is a vampire monkey mafia don.

While yes, kids raised together under normal circumstances are incapable of forming romantic attachments to each other, trauma and isolation reaaaaaally messes with that instinct. Under normal circumstances kids explore romance and sex with people outside their family group, but if you don't have any contact with outsiders those feelings don't just not happen, it's a pretty standard part of teen development unless you're ace and/or aro. So instead of fancying the cutie in chem class they end up fancying one of the few people they *do* have access to. In*est is suuuuuper common in isolated or closed off families who have little contact with outsiders, particularly those that don't educate or socialise their teenagers outside the family. Hence the Duggars boy abusing his sisters

what I find really cool is each volume of the comics actually ahs a single scene used to set up the enxt adventure volume 1 has a scene where Number 5 fights a HORDE of goons sent from the time commission to capture him. However, we are never told WHO these people are or WHY they tried to kill him until VOlume 2. SImilarily VOlume 2 has a scene featuring a vaguely villainious businessman who had NOTHING to do with the story of volume 2 and said scene featured NOONE involved in volume 2's plot, so we wouldn't find out what his deal was until VOlume 3 finally came out to reveal he was one of the main villains of that volume. also random asides: I actually like how one dimensional and vile Hazel and Chacha are. Funnily enough while they're kileld halfway through the volume they're pretty much the main villains of the comic with the time comission being a greater villain of the plot, blowing up the entire planet just cause they felt like it. WHile they're more developed and somewhat symapthetic (well one more than the other) in the tv show, in the comic they're absolutely deranged and terrifying (they also NEVER remove their masks unlike the show) I do find it a shame the show pretty much fumbles the bizarreness of the comics and drops a lot of what made the comics so fun. THey were darekly satirical, a play on superhero comics played to bizarre extremes. I mean while it would've been a budget nightmare you can't tell me you WOULDN'T want to see the fight with ZOmbie RObot Gustave Eiffel played in Live Action. i feel The Horror's power is more able to partially summon many different monsters through his body, not jsut tentacles, he's jsut not alive long enough for us to see that. I quite like the twist that Diego's pwoers were so situational and banal. It's clear they're a reason why his adobtive dad didn't treat him very well and plays a large part in not only why he's SO antagonistic towards his family but also why he continues to distinguish himself as basically his world's batman to show up the old man, as well as shows that he's a badass DESPITE his powers not because of them.

The horror is also overused. He doesn’t show up till hotel oblivion, when klaus has reached is absolute lowest point and ODs to commit suicide. Ben’s appearance is incredibly impactful and crucial to klaus’s recovery… unlike the show. There’s a bit of an issue with Netflix’s number five… they try to make the absolute most of the very limited knowledge we have about him in the novels and as a result his story feels more bland and less traumatic than it actually is. We don’t get to see how it affects him much, and he’s somehow a functional member of society by S4. In contrast, it dictates every single one of his actions in the comics. He’s literally incapable of being normal and he has psychotic breakdowns often. Netflix five is natural killer and was always bordering evil in his very nature, but he strives to break out of it because he knows it wrong. comic five was once gentle and craves the humanity he once had immensely, but he was forcefully forged into a sociopathic killer in favor of his time-jump capabilities. Just to be clear, I think the actor who plays him is incredibly talented and I truthfully believe no one else could’ve played a character like five. this is more of a gripe with a scriptwriting because Gallagher very clearly proved to have the capacity to act like a mentally unstable madman in the classic “I’m the daddy here” episode.

My dramatic take: The final episode was my Game of Thrones. I've watched shows with notoriously bad endings and just found them wildly mediocre or actually fine (I blame aggressive fan responses making me expect them to be so much worse) but this finale genuinely annoyed me. Having the final episode wrap up with "shit, we've got 15 minutes left...umm...okay, everything's wrong because you all exist so you have to kill yourselves," especially after the majority of the show was about these characters fixing the problems Reginald caused and just trying to live happy, normal lives in spite of their trauma felt kind of gross, not bittersweet like I think they were going for.

Honestly I thought season 3 was the big shark-jump of this show, what with all the potential of the sparrow academy being wasted as they all get killed off quickly, with an embarrassingly bad representation of a disabled character, with making Allison into an irredeemably evil person but still treating her as the good main character who gets a wish fulfillment totally unearned ending, AND with doubling down on Luther doing bizarre pseudo incest shit. @@noviatoria2436 I think by the midpoint of season 2, Luther is already over Allison. So him moving on in season 3 makes perfect sense to me. Not only are they not blood related, the Umbrellas and the Sparrows don't see each other as siblings at all, and critically they weren't raised together which is what made his romance with Allison weird. Something that I wish the show adapted was the way the White Violin was defeated. In the comic, before Number Five shoots White Violin/Vanya, Klaus comes strolling in wearing a monocle, apparently possessed by the spirit of Sir Reginald, and proceeds to verbally tear W.V. down. But then it turns out that Klaus was bluffing and tells the group that he wouldn't dare to even try and conjure Sir Reginald's spirit. It was both funny and clever.

I have only watched the show, and I have complicated feelings about it. There are some parts that I absolutely love. From the charming sidestory about how Hazel discovers true love and goes AWOL to the amazing performance of Aidan Gallagher. I really like the setup which starts with a basic getting the band back together to save the world, and ends where there traumatic backstory eventually causes them to fail epically, and the world isn't saved. Although that is a bit of shaggy dog story, a frustrating futile tragedy, which makes it a hard watch. But in a good way. I enjoy the forlorn depression and feeling left out of Vanya as portrayed by Elliot Page. I like the funnier depression and desperate escapism of Klaus (great acting by Sheehan) as well as where the story takes him and his character development later on. But there are other parts of the story that grates on me. I don't like how often people dramatically fails at basic communication, just so the plot can happen. I don't understand why they so often are total dicks to each other, needlessly, as it seems to me. Yeah, I get that they're all royally effed up by their abusive father, but there should have been at least some traumatic bonding - victims together tend to get really soppy with each other. And generally, if protagonists are unlikeable, but not full on villain protagonists, it becomes harder to care about them. The friction between Umbrellas and Sparrows is a prime example. Their fights feel forced, and I don't care about the outcome anyway. The worst offender is Allison who is portrayed as both a moral monster, and also as an entitled immature self pitying Karen: I want her to eat scat and die. But the show very often seems to be written as if I'd empathise and feel pity for her, as if I'd be on her side... That doesn't work, she starts out annoying and unsympathetic, and then she crosses the moral event horizon. I want the others to realize that she is the worst super villain and team up to kill her, that's what I want. When they get soppy and forgiving and try to rehabilitate her, I get annoyed with them too. Anyway. It's an interesting watch. Cheers

i do suggest giving the comics a try. WHile the characters aren't monsters, they are complex, often dark and VERY fucked up. Allison is actually pretty interesting as its left ambiguous if she has used her powers on her loved ones or not, though she's consistently portrayed as being willing to do some bad shit if it means saving the life of Klaus, who's pretty much the sole member of the family she has any decent rapport with. Though the fact the comics are fucking weird may be a turn off.

One of the worst things about Seasons 3 and 4 imo, is that the siblings keep being extremely shitty to each other, despite having spent 2 full seasons reconnecting. Like after the end of season 2, they should really be nicer to each other and trust each other's capabilities more. But the writers seem to think that what worked in the first 2 seasons was the funny banter and bickering, and not the genuine character drama and development. The show feels like a parody of itself having them be so shitty to each other, like you say for no reason. The disfunction starts to feel forced after a while, especially since we've seen them come together multiple times. The show has clear favorites regarding what characters get to be assholes (Five, Allison and Lila) and which don't. Diego is repeatedly called out in season 4 by Lila (& others) for not appreciating his soul-sucking job and married life enough, but Lila who ALSO HATES IT isn't! Lila gets to sneak around and be a spy or something, but Diego is an asshole for wanting that very thing, despite him being set up from season 1 episode 1 as the only one that could never leave the superhero life. Also Five deliberately is preventing Diego from joining the CIA for no reason other than to be mean to him. Diego and Luther spend like 2 full episodes of season 4 waiting in a CIA basement for the last episode to start, just because Five felt like being a dick to them.
@rociohernandez3077
@rociohernandez3077 2 ай бұрын
The reason they often are dicks to each other is because Reginald had them competing constantly, that's why Diego has such difficulty agreeing with Luthor because he was number 2 (in the comics it's even more prominent with Luther being the "golden child" and Diego having weaker powers than his siblings, which force him to work harder I think). I'll say in terms of relationships, I do like how the comics explore their flaws, why they don't consider each other family for real (because they were never treated as such by the Monocle) and so on. Allison is such an example, in the show she starts season 1 being largely a good person who is over using her rumor to benefit herself but in the comic she still struggles with this and we can see how her actions impact the people around her and how they view her. It's not perfect, I also agree the show (at least season 1) did a pretty good job with making the characters feel more grounded and the conflicts be more interconnected. But the character development is an issue because it often feels like the Academy are acting a certain way (being combative with Five, not talking to each other or generally retracing their development) just to make sure we get 10 episodes.

My favorite part of the comics is when *SPOILER ALERT* Rumor rumors the back of JFK's head right off in Dallas that day to preserve the timeline. Blew me away! (pardon the pun). I thought they really pulled their punches with that storyline in season 2.

Here's some more stuff about Gerard way He was a huge comic nerd Specifically for the doom patrol He was interning at cartoon network and even had a pilot made And this a minor issue but surprised you didn't show the full message about Gerard coming out message

Thanks for this! I love the first two comics (haven’t gotten around to the third). I dipped out of the TV show after The Conductor wasn’t, well, The Conductor. I might give season 1 a second shot. I do think the casting was really well done, especially Klaus. I liked how they handled his character in what I saw of the show, even the drugs and Ben following him around. (If you can’t tell, Klaus was my favorite in the comics lmao). The comics have little MCR references, especially in the chapter titles. “But the Past Ain’t Through with You”, “We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals”, etc. You can definitely tell Gerard was working on this while doing The Black Parade. I think that also might be why he wrote Klaus to be over the drugs/booze, since he was getting sober then iirc

The one thing I really noticed and bothered me about the first season compared to later ones, is that Victor went from being super OP to just average powered who could easily be dwarfed with a shot at the arm or by easily being surprised with a hit behind the knees. I wondered why they never explained the de-powering.

My husband and I went from really enjoying the first few episodes of Season 1 to hate watching the rest of the season and not watching any of the rest. What really turned us off was the inconsistency of the characters believing in "weird stuff". Like they have a scene with 5 telling them the world is going to be destroyed and they are all like "Ok - we gotta fix this". _Literally_ the next scene was Klaus going "I see dead people and I've been talking with Ben" and ALL of them responded with "That's crazy". REALLY? Your _other brother_ just came back from the future with a 50 yr olds mind in a 13yr olds body, told you the world was going to be destroyed and you accept that at face value (along with your oldest surviving family being a talking chimp, one of you having a gorilla body, and the fact you KNOW all of you have some sort of powers) yet the idea that Klaus can see dead people is "unbelievable". Family dysfunction is one thing but stupidity is another. Like _believing_ Klaus but not trusting he'll have it together enough to help with the mission, or some other interpersonal conflict makes sense given the family dysfunction. Just NOT believing him makes NO sense.

It kinda does. He’s either high 24/7, or utterly wasted. Witnessing weird shit go down doesn’t mean someone should automatically believe what they’re high as a kite brother is telling them. He’s not exactly the most stable person in the series.

the show is serious and unserious at the same time. i guess thats part of its "humor" thats kind of its thing but i assure you, s2 will be so worth it! its peak. but umbrella academy is probably not your cup of tea since that part still occurs throughout the show. He's taken the least seriously. but overall, its fun, quirky, surprisingly deep. just dont watch season 4. 3 is fine.

@@DaleyKreations They told him to use his powers to talk to their dead dad, then, Klaus himself stated several dozens of times that he was incapable doing so. If I remember correctly, in the comics their numbers were in order of how useful he thought they would be for him. So it makes sense Luthor would claim leadership bc he's " number 1" and why Vanya was number seven bc she supposedly had no power at all

If i remember correctly, in the comics Hargreeves gave them the numbers, and it shows how dangerous they are - no 7 being most dangerous (Vanya in the comics) and no 1 being the least (Luther). But Hargreeves never told the children the reasoning, so Luther assumed he is the best as number 1. Just another way Hargreeves was a manipulative asshole.

It's so amazing to see how different the powers are alone in the comics. Like, in the show they would probably, definitely lose to 99% of any other superhero team, but in the comics, Klaus, Allison and Vanya/Viktor carry so hard they can defeat at least the likes of The Seven or Teen Team or maybe even the Guardians of the Globe

I read the comics first so that's where my heart lies. To me it feels like the world of the Comics is where the Silver Age shook hands with the Bronze Age; i.e. A lot of sci-fi drug trippy weirdness being observed by gritty, realistic and flawed characters. I also prefer the comic book Hazel and Chacha. It's a less is more type deal where not knowing anything about these nut bars other than they like sugar and guns is more interesting than the old 'oh the assassin is bored with his job' schtick that's been done a thousand times. Also Ben was described as 'the boy with monsters under his skin' and briefly in Oblivion we see his ghost with a big booty hole in his sternum lending credit to my personal theory that what ever creature he had contained...got out.
