Meyer did actually write some interesting characters she just lacks the skill to get it across or the wherewithal to know when to present certain things as negative. Take Edward. He's a telepath so he knows everything someone is thinking. He spent the first decade or whatever of his life drinking the blood of humans who were about to/ did commit terrible crimes, and justified his murder of those people as such. But in doing so, he would obviously have such a god complex, deciding who lived and died. He eventually stopped because he didn't want to kill anymore, but that's such an interesting idea l. Now in the books, he has, for years, been surrounded by teenage girls fawning all over him and teenage boys being jealous, so he hears all of that unfiltered adoration or hate knowing that he wouldn't be able to fit in with any of them anyway, so he gets a superiority complex and you see that with how he treats Bella- as a child because compared to him, every teenager he meets is. If he could read Bella's mind, I don't think he would have been half as interested in her, he would either have killed her or just left Forks because by knowing her thoughts she's just as vapid as the rest of them but extra tasty. Being a telepath, no one has secrets from him. He isn't allowed a boundary because he can hear everyone's unfiltered thoughts about him, so I'm sure he would eventually slip into not thinking boundaries were important at all. So now you've got a character with a god complex, a superiority complex, and a complete lack of understanding of boundaries because of it all. What a fascinating character this could have been if Meyer had gotten Bella to make Edward realise these things and be a better person because of it.

One of the most baffling things about the Twilight franchise is that every single vampire who isn't Edward has a much, much more compelling background than him. It's almost as if Meyer threw in some murder so his past wouldn't be completely uninteresting compared to, again, literally every single other vampire.
@pedrovallefin84062 жыл бұрын
I feel like he was made to be uninteresting. Partly to match with Bellas blandness, and partly because hes the archetype of "the Beast". You know, the cool asshole that has done horrible things becomes better after falling in love with some beautiful girl (nevermind that Edward dosent really change all that much though the story).So, because he has to fit the archetype he cant have a particular complex story like the others do.
@noelbernabe87042 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't believe Edward is uninteresting. I think his backstory as a mind reading vampire who went on a vigilante period is as interesting as anyone else. Really the difference is we got 4 books and 5 movies focused on him, to the point where he was ramemd down our throats. THat in contast to characters like Carlisle or Jasper getting 1 chapter exploring their history. If Twilight focused on Carlisle instead of Edward for 4 straight books, we'd probably see people argue Edward was more interesting and deserved more focus. I think the only character that is legitimately uninteresting is Bella... but that's sort of by design. Lead female protagonists in YA fiction are designed to be blank slates, so teenage girls can self insert themselves.
@coiler_119 Жыл бұрын
I dunno, dying in a pandemic and not getting the chance to join the army to fight in WW1 is pretty interesting. It also explains to some extent why he's stuck in a permanent state of sulk -- though he quite literally dodged a bullet (and mustard gas) by not joining in the fighting, there was still a sense of extreme patriotic duty for men to enlist and a social stigma against those who didn't. That, and it seems like he embodies the nihilism of the Lost Generation, although I doubt any of this was intentional

One of the BEST things Meyer added when writing midnight sun is that in the baseball scene when James, Laurent, and Victoria are chatting with the Cullens, jasper is subtly shielding Bella and Alice from them by controlling their moods and making them seem utterly, mind-numbingly boring so the nomads will glance at them and move on quickly. It only fails because of the gust of wind that blows Bella's scent towards James but wow I thought it was such a good detail for her to include Also I loved that Charlie's thoughts are hard to read too, like Edward can only see abstract feelings not specific thoughts Otherwise that book was painful to read and I'd love Dom to give it a crack 😈
@MarianFK3 жыл бұрын
Huh, have to admit, I like that thing about Charlie's thoughts too. In other hands maybe you get novels and novels of fan fiction or something that gives credit to these characters. "Not seeing the world that way" As like, a half defense of Meyer here, I also grew up as a Mormon in Utah, ingrained in that specific culture and history, so I can say with certainty that statement is absolutely true: we aren't taught to see the world that way. It's absolutely horrible, inexcusable in the current era, and is something I had to consciously change within my worldview for several years. While the group of people five years younger than me are actively fighting against that notion, the people five years older still cling to the idea that everywhere is like Utah (which is a HORRIBLE thought). So like yes, Meyer has that worldview because of life circumstance, but also none of those things are good ideas to have.

i grew up protestant so please correct me if i’m wrong (bc tbh i’m not sure if meyer is a fundamentalist where this could potentially be seen as normal or even if her mormonism is to blame here), but could her incredibly narrow perspective on the world based on her upbringing also explain why all the cullen siblings are dating? i always saw it as a strange plot point, but after learning about and researching the flds and other small sects of religions, i figure nothing is impossible in the world of cult-y theism. i’m so sorry if this sounds ignorant, i’m just genuinely curious if it could have been a factor, if at all
@tinahawley3203 жыл бұрын
@@later_babes Incest is indeed taboo in Mormonism, so I doubt her upbringing was a factor. I suspect a more likely reason is she wanted all the other Cullen siblings to be in relationships so that there was no chance of any of them competing for Bella's attention, and she didn't think through the implications, as she failed to do with many other aspects of the plot. She also might have thought that she made it clear enough that they were adoptive siblings, though personally I still find that squicky.

Bella's instinct reaction is that it's a small-town mentality to be scandalized by that, then immediately admits to herself that even at home that would've caused gossip. I think Meyer was trying to imply that because they were TECHNICALLY different pairs of siblings, it wasn't weird, and it was just them all living under the same roof that would be questionable. but.... you know.... still.

Is 14 agents rejecting the early draft for Twilight really that unusual for a first time writer? As I recall, Pierce Brown said he was rejected by over 120 agents before finally someone accepted Red Rising. I really loved these books back then because: 1) I was a literal child. 2) Because there was so much manipulation, emotional abuse, and gaslighting I had to deal with from my own mother. I never saw the actions of the characters as problematic because a lot of it was pretty normal to me. I also think I rationalized their behavior because that what I had to do with my own mom. It’s been over a decade since I considered myself a fan, but I wasn’t until your videos that I realized I had forgotten SO MUCH about these books. It was really shocking to listen to your summaries about the books I used to love as a child, through the eyes of an adult. I definitely agree that the books were wish fulfillment for people who had bad self esteem. I used to dream about running away from home, and starting over. Plus, finding a hot dude who was obsessed with me would’ve been a nice bonus 🤣🤣🤣 I’m sure my experiences don’t apply to most people, but I’m sure there are others out there who can relate ✌🏻

According to his wiki, Taylor Lautner *does* have some native ancestry from at least three different tribes on his mother's side...
@asgharabbas21933 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I never confused him with being white. He always seemed native to me. He has other issues though. Like being a terrible actor .
@StardustWhip3 жыл бұрын
True, but I've seen an interview with MTV where he mentions that his family found out about their native ancestry through preparing for Twilight (specifically saying "I am part Native American. We learned that through [preparing for] this film. I'm French, Dutch and German, and on my mother's side, she has some Potawatomi and Ottawa Indian in her.") So it did luckily work out, but the studio still cast an actor that they didn't know had Native American ancestry, for their hot Native American boy.

Have you thought to fo Pratical Magic? I've just read the book and it's perfect for lost in abdication and if the bones of the story wasn't there I would say it's an In Name Only candidate. It's a beloved halloween and comfort movie in my family and I was excited when I learned it was a book but was a bit disappointed with how different the two were, especially the ham-handed romance thrown in at the end, the book is definitely a product of its time but it's mind-boggling how they cherry picked details and made a(in my opinion) descent movie.

The explanation they could've used to explain Edward's stalky behavior could've been that as she's his singer - her blood sings to him, him keeping tabs on her was something he couldn't literally control. Does that make it better? No, but it would've made it interesting if Edward was trying and failing to stay away from her. Or make it so that Edward, due to being able to mind-read can't really shut off thoughts he hears so he's always bombarded. When Bella shows up, he feels peace when he's near her for the first time since becoming a vampire, so while he's actively stalking her and he knows it's dangerous for her, he just does it for selfish reasons.

There's a book I remember reading as a teen, before twilight was out, called 'ill come to you by moonlight'. They started off quite similar, teenage daughter goes to live with father, meets vampire boy, falls in what she calls love. But it becomes pretty obvious that the vampire is only stringing her along and is going to kill her eventually. It's a cautionary tale about abusive relationships. Anyway, the first time I read twilight I really expected it to end the same way. Edward and the rest of the Cullen's just seemed creepy.
@dhsf59374 ай бұрын
I couldn't find the book that you said,maybe isn't "look for me by moonlight"?
@person.probably4 ай бұрын
@@dhsf5937 It might have been, this was a couple of decades ago now, and I only read it once. I thought the title came from a scene where the vampire spelled out "ill come to you by moonlight" during a scrabble game with the girl and her family. The girl chose to interpret the first word as "I'll" due to scrabble having no punctuation. This also changed it to a line from a poem called "the highwayman". (Extra info if you want to check it against the book you mentioned.) Edit. The exact line from the poem is "Then look for me by moonlight, Watch for me by moonlight, I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.” So the title you mentioned would also make sense. I knew the poem long before I read the book, so that's what stuck with me.

Speaking of book 2, it was especially bad about this. I knew from the book that the second film was primarily about a moody teen love triangle with a side-trip to Italy tacked onto the end. But the trailer prominently featured the stuff from Italy. Much like the final book itself, it built up the Volturi as this great and terrible threat that fizzled out after a few a strong words. My dad, who had only seen the trailer, was sorely disappointed and even a little miffed at the false advertising.
