My Husband was a Combat vet, He didn't get Arlington, but he got a military site like it, the only thing my Husband didn't get, was the Horse drawn carriage! He got the 21 Gun salute, He got that damned Folded Flag! He got the whole shabang! What he got that was rare, was, His CO in Vietnam presided over the entire service. His Brothers that stood with him in combat, were his Honor Guard! He had one hell of a send off! Not many are blessed like that!

My father is buried in Arlington in section 69. Both my ex and son can be buried there. So this song hits real close - too close - to home. If you aren't aware of the history, Arlington was the home of Confederate General Robert E. Lee (through his wife's family) and was appropriated by the Northern troops during the Civil War. There are only a few civilians of great renown buried there amongst the thousands of military heroes. I've stood at the Cenotaph in London and the feelings of great respect and honour are similar to the f÷elites evoked just by stepping onto the hallowedgrounds of Arlington. Thank you for your tributes to our military. It means a lot. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸😪

I joined the Marines at 17. My parents had to sign for me to join. Prior to my departure to Vietnam as I walked through the Atlanta airport a young woman spat on me and called me a baby killer. I served 18 months in Vietnam, one month in Granada, and 8 months in Desert Shield / Storm. On my trip home from the last, my plane stopped off at Dover for refueling. We were required to disembark and driven to a hangar to freshen up. When we walked in we were greeted by hundreds of civilians forming an aisle to the far corner where a vet stood waving our flag and the started playing "I'm proud to be an American ". All of us that had endured the treatment during Vietnam and a few of the others were in tears to witness such a change. It is great that even today with our politics such as they are, our military personnel still get their due respect from most.

My father fought in the war and a couple brothers served also. As a high school student in the early 70's I remember some of the disturbing things I saw on TV and had an awakening as to what was happening in our country. It was truly a shameful part of our country's history. I am so thankful that valuable lessons were learned from that time. Whether you agree with a war or not, the men & women fighting are not our enemies. They are defending our nation and each & every person's liberties & freedom. For that alone, we should be respectful and thankful. If you have a problem with the politics, take it up with a politician. And, might I add, if I were ever to spit on any soldier my father & brothers would have, at the very least, given me a tongue-lashing, a field day on my a** if I even thought about doing it a second time. lol. Thank you for your service, sir. Since we are on the topic - both my dad & mom had military burials at sea.

This is one of my favorite songs by Trace Atkins. I always cry when I hear it. Growing up both of my parents instilled in me the importance of the people who fought for our freedoms. Without them our freedoms would not exist. My dad told me my veteran grandfather would take him to vet events and memorial services to pay respect to them. The USA and England currently have great respect to service men and veterans. My dad was a teen during the Vietnam war. He did not serve, but he did see how horribly the returning service men were treated at the time. They had actual trash, and also vegetables, etc thrown at them. They were called unspeakable names. This was nation wide in the United States at the time. They were not thanked for their sacrifice or service. Even USA celebrities were horrible towards the Vietnam servicemen. The stories I have heard about the treatment are nearly unspeakable. My mother told me that due to how they were treated back then a lot of Vietnam vets would not tell others about thier military service, what war they fought nor wear the veteran hats and labels. It has only been in the last 30 or so years that Vietnam veterans talk about thier service, wear the veteran hats, etc in public. Thankfully how the US public treated Vietnam veterans has changed drastically for the better.

A challenge for all: if you ever see a soldier or veteran sitting by themselves eating or at the park, ask if it's ok to sit with them. Ask them how their day is. Give them a moment of normal interaction. So many military members and vets feel alienated from the civilian world. Giving them a moment of normalcy is a huge gift for them.

8:15 I think we as a nation reevaluated our treatment of our service members after the horrible treatment of the returning Vietnam veterans. My dad was just young enough to miss being drafted but saw many of his older friends leave and only a couple came home. He says that he always felt bad knowing that our nation sent them off but when confronted by the visual of war welcomed them home with hate. many of those veterans are there at the airports to welcome the new warriors home so they are given the respect they never had. Now we can hate the idea of "conflict " but separate our feelings about the war from the people we are sending to fight it.

It surprises me that many don't realize that many of our fallen are buried at Arlington. My sister-in-law is buried in Kentucky and had the full military honors. Twenty one gun salute and Taps is not something you can ever erase from your mind. I know it's tradition where our POTUS goes to pay tribute but I and many others would like that to happen for those that are buried elsewhere....they deserve that honor also. I have been to Arlington...it is beautiful and heartbreaking. But I won't find my family members buried there but I deeply appreciate the sacrifice of those who are.

I've got a few family members laying in that hollowed ground. This song brings goosebumps and tears every time. Much love and respect for doing this, and your respect for our great country. Its pretty sad that people from other countries have more respect for our country and our men and women in uniform than people who live here. ❤💙🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸

It's fitting that today on memorial day I found this. I've been to Arlington and seen the rows and rows of stones, my father fought in WWII when we buried him we had the military service with the folding of the flag, gun salute and taps, it was very moving. Thank you Don

My grandfather landed at Normandy Beach on D - Day and returned for the 50th Anniversary. My uncles and a cousin later went on to server in the US Armed Forces. In addition to very dear friends of mine. I'm very luck all of them came home. But I will ALWAYS honor those that have served. Because I know anyone of them may be called upon to make the greatest sacrifice of all, so that I can live in the land of the free.

I'm very proud of our military members past and present and the sacrifices they willingly take upon themselves for all Americans, including my late father a WW11 Veteran and Purple Heart recipient. May I say to you sir that I have massive respect for you and the way you give respect and graciousness to our Armed Forces! I admire and appreciate your heart and spirit! What a fine man you are! Thanks for doing this reaction brother, it truly hits home. Also you'll be interested to know that there is a house on a hill in Arlington National Cemetery (if its still there) that was Robert E Lee's home and while he was off fighting the war the union army were burying bodies around the home so no one could live there after Mrs. Lee died. Because she was in a wheelchair she couldn't go to court to pay her taxes and surrendered the property to the government. Later Lee's son filed a lawsuit against the government for taking the property without due process. Now here's the kicker, if memory serves me right, it was Abraham Lincoln's son that represented the Lee family in court. Cool hey?

I think you might also appreciate Welcome to Hell by Trace Adkins. There is no official video because he only performs this song on the 9/11 anniversary. There are a few live videos of him performing it, in the one from Ramstein AFB he explains how he wrote the song on September 12th and what he was going through those days right afterwards. Another great one is Til the Last Shots Fired. I love the respect you pay to all military servicemen and women. I live in the Washington DC area and volunteer every year to place flags on the veterans graves on Memorial Day and wreaths at Christmas at Quantico National Cemetery. Walking through Arlington National Cemetery, seeing the Tomb of the Unknowns and JFKs eternal flame and nearby Iwo Jima Memorial are all sights I recommend to anyone visiting Washington DC. I also recommend going downtown to the Vietnam Memorial as well.

My husband is interred at the Veterans Cemetery in our state. On the day of his military memorial service one of the 7 veterans who were to perform the 21 gun salute was sick. So he only got an 18 gun salute. They gave us the casings from the bullets and of course the flag. I am really moved by this video and the song.
