Hey brother, I am back and was patiently waiting for this Part 2 and THANK YOU for the amazing explanation and comparison, I love how you specifically did the ProRes RAW comparison between the Panasonic and Sony, and side by side comparison between the internal XAVC recording with ProRes RAW as well. I thought something was wrong with my style of colour grading that I saw more noise on ProRes RAW compared to XAVC, I thought it was "my fault" that it was noisy, hahaha and your video has given me the peace of mind knowing the fact that its because there is no internal correction of denoising since it bypasses that, All in all, thank you so much for your amazing explanation and looking forward to more amazing content from you my friend, thanks for the corrective LUTS too, gonna test it out PS: I humbly believe that the people here who are following your channel are nerds as well so I don think you should put any disclaimers in your videos as we ARE NOT going to skip to another part of the video and will watch through all your amazing explanation ;). Take care and stay safe mate

Hey bro... yeah this one took some time as I got busy with work. Thanks for your patience. Yeah I wanna work on a dedicated A7SIII Vs S1h episode to explore more differences. I already found many interesting findings. So will try and work on that soon. And as I told you before, RAW is usually noisy, that's the norm in RAW. And yeah... I give those nerd warnings just in case, I've had comments before of people saying they had no idea about what I'm talking about.. So it's a safety measure LOL Thanks again Adam for watching.

Dude, thank you so much for figuring out the hue shift. I had a huge problem selecting for reds in resolve in the first project I did with the A7S III and I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Hues being universally off with inconsistent saturation values explains literally all of the wild issues I was having making hue vs hue adjustments. Thanks for putting in the time and great work!

Always...ALWAYS ... hands down the best insightful videos... best production... highest degree of knowledge and truthfulness ... Sadly this last thing is pretty lacking in alot of YT videos about cameras. Finally someone who is a pro points out what most of us knew for some time. Sony has always had a high level of noise reduction in their cameras and circumventing that noise reduction path does show the camera for what it is... Plus... if someone one day decides they will now be using RAW and think it's a cake walk and will be the best thing since sliced bread this video shows those people that it isn't so easy and you need to routinely use noise reduction to deal with the noise that is inherent. Some people don't even understand what LOG really is!! It simply is a means by which the image data is remapped to keep information within the range of the sensor ... designed really to help preserve highlights/shadows and increase dynamic range. Very different from RAW... raw is just data whereas LOG is part of a video format.. any number of them. The lack of ProRes Raw really is due to the fact that BM has their own RAW format and, if I am not mistaken, that came out a long time before Apple released PR Raw. Very unlikely we will see BM put Apples competing raw format on their machines BUT you will likely see some company come out with a plug in that DOES allow Resolve to work with that data. Another key point DP makes is that some LUTS are just there to bring the image to a balance position of accuracy. That is really color correction. Color Grading is designed to add looks and styles and grades are usual put on as a second third or higher level after the initial pass to correct. This video looks like it was a ton of work and clearly done by someone who knows their sh#$%. Great and accurate content not fluff and BS. Excellent work ... but clearly a little too dense info for most of the viewers on YT. This is par for the course I am afraid.

THANK YOU so much Michael for your awesome words and supportive comment. EVen though as you said "a little too dense info for most of the viewers on YT" it still really makes me happy to find people like you who appreciate the effort put in it and who understand what I' talking about. Thanks again for the support. Hope to hear from you in my upcoming episodes.

@@THEDPJOURNEY Yeah it is obviously a ton of testing and THEN you have a ton of work for the video. Interestingly you seem to be as creative as you are technical... so that's pretty rare. Impressive. Huge Thank you. The charts helped me fully comprehend the pace of your video. Your intro perfectly sets the tone for viewer. FYI: I had virtually no previous exposure to this topic. Explaining flow and manipulation of the data with the graphic animation (for me) allows my memory to recall the discussion with ease. Some of us see the memory first and this triggers the concept being presented. I taught jet flight management systems in a previous life, where I discovered the different ways people recall the exact same event. Who cares, right? Please keep doing you young man. You are very good at it!

That Simultaneous recording is really a big Pro. Not only because it helped you create this awesome video for us (Thank You!). But can also help with that lens distortion (flipping back and forth and correcting the same clip shot in both ways). And also becase, as you said, you need to be selective when choosing which project you want to do in RAW, because of the time it needs, but that doesn't stop you from shooting both RAW and XAVC. Then you decide when you do the Post. Maybe you even use both: XAVC for the bulk of the work, but RAW for those tricky shots that need more correcting, VFX/GreenScreen or other adjustments that benefit from RAW better. It's also a business opportunity, asking a client for more money if they want a redo on some shots, but with RAW (because now you have both files).

I really appreciate those videos as we approach our first project to be shot in ProRes Raw. One question I need answered is whether there’s a difference between boosting gain/iso in camera and doing it in post. Also, whether there’s a difference between changing WB in camera vs in post. Alister Chapman seems to be saying there’s a huge difference and you still need to get both right in camera. Maybe this could be a topic for the 3rd video installment of this series! It’s so good! Thanks so much!
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. About the ISO and WB... well I didn't really test that on the SONY since there's no WB control in post except for Scratch, which is already inaccurate, so not sure how Allister tested it honestly. In theory, if there's any difference, then the one coming out of RAW on the computer should be the more accurate one IMO. Same applies to ISO... there shouldn't be any difference. I personally didn't test it though since internally you have a denoiser that's applied which will screw up all your results anyway, so there's no way to properly test it either. Again... not sure how Alister tested things when it's not really apples to apples

16:40 you can actually record ProRes RAW with a Ninja V on the FX6. It requires you get the SDI adapter and SDI Raw license from Atomos' website, which is only a $300 total cost. Combine that cost with the Ninja V its $900, still cheaper than the $1200 Shogun.

Thanx man for this very detailed insights and superb technical graphic explanations! Next week me and a friend are releasing a A7SIII ProResRAW lowlight shooting tutorial, and we had the same findings about noise, even at base ISO640. Premiere Workflow isn`t there already, maybe Final Cut gets it all better done. And yeah, it´s a nightmare to denoise in post. The missing GYRO infos in RAW was new to me and something we didn`t test out. Maybe it might be possible to export the gyro data from a parallel recorded H.264 clip in catalyst browse and apply it to the ProResFile somehow in the near future? We did a greenscreen test and couldn`t find advantages in ProResRAW over 10bit internally, it was even the opposite, because when only using a basic Keyer like Ultra-Key in Premiere, the noise from the RAW Files tended to be slightly visible after chroma keying. Of cource, you could denoise before, but you know... processor nightmare... :p So, the only real advantage of ProResRAW for me is the little bit more amount of detail due to the higher resolution, but honsetly thats not enough for me to deal with the big file sizes and all the other cons you pointed out. Hopefully someone will built an external RAW Recorder with another, really efficient RAW Codec (maybe Blackmagic? ;) and is smart enough to implement some really dope ass AI denoise algorithm that cleans up the image before burning into the RAW Codec. ;) Another thing to mention: We like to point out to your Episode for all the technical stuff we didn`t cover in our tutorial, hope that´s ok for you. ;)) Cheers!
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yeah I tried to export the Gyro data from Catalyst Browse, but found no options there. The funny thing is that XAVC has MUCH MORE metadata than RAW when opened on CB. The green screen, I ddi test it through a VFX friend of mine who compared both and found a HUGE difference. And yes, please feel free to tag my video, would appreciate if you credit the channel. Thanks again for watching and for your valuable support

16:13 You should check what exactly sony a7s3's integrated screen resolution is. japanese camera makers tend to write their display/evf resolution with dot, not pixel. In modern display technology, usually, a pixel is made by 3 different dots, red/green/blue dots. So in many cases, 1.44M dots screen in camera actually means 0.48M pixel resolution. Thus, Ninja V's screen resolution should be marked as 6.22M, when using dots. I love your videos and learn various things from you, but little more detail would polish their perfection.

Can you please make a video showing how to correct the lens distortion when shooting and how to work with the prores raw clips overall
@Slettador4 жыл бұрын
You'd have to shoot grids and evenly lit surfaces to fix lens distortion and vignetting properly, but you can probably get away with using a plugin for correcting lens distortion and eyeballing the paraments. For vignetting, that depends on the f-stop so that makes it much more complicated to correct for across a project

What Slettador said is correct... But that won't really matter unless the distortion is so bad that your eye catches it. Or if you're working in VFX and your VFX artist is asking for that distortion map

Very informative, espacially the part on the color accuracy. Would be nice to have this same analysis of color comparing with the S1H. Thanks for the video!
