Thank you for this, it's really helpful. I really wanted my first drive on my own to be short, but unfortunately the car I'm collecting isn't going to be from the place that was originally agreed and I'll have to drive 15 miles home instead. There's no way around it. Fortunately, I know the road well but it's not an ideal scenario. The car is the same make and model to one I learned in, but it may all feel so new. Top tip: if you are collecting a car at this time of year, do it in the morning or early afternoon so you don't have the pressure of needing to get back before nightfall.

I'd definitely recommend getting your car a few months before your tests and having a few drives, not even proper lessons, with family or a friend. Just so you can get used to actually driving without someone trying to teach you so you can put your own music on and get used to being in your own car, it really did wonders for my confidence and ability

Can I also suggest... be aware of weather. One of my first drives on my own was in torrential rain, and I had no idea how to handle all the condensation. I was on main roads and it was very scary. Know how your headlights work (especially if they don't have an 'auto' mode) and how to use the fan on hot to clear the inside of your windscreen. And allow plenty of time for journeys, in case of random stuff like your car needing defrosting or you getting lost or something.

I agree completely! I had this exact situation happen to me in my maybe 3rd drive on my own. I got caught out by torrential rain, condensation which i didn't know how to deal with, in a completely different car to the one I'd learned in. It was absolutely terrifying! I very nearly called it quits there and then but after that I re-read the handbook step by step and used Google for different scenarios before heading out again.

Take your time and self talk through the steps can help couple of little things many of use will be 18 starting to go out friends will be drunk and want a lift .some will be ok and others will be an absolute nightmare nightmare. Don't be frightened to throw them out if needed or stop and tell them to stop and behave. I had 1 mate who would knock the car out gear pull the handbrake on Definitely the nightmare passenger. The other option if nervous on your own either have someone follow you or you follow them cam help on certain situations. The next day I tried to drive to my work and I couldn’t even remember how to get there (even though I had been walking the exact same way for years) so I used a satnav 😂. One thing I’ve found is that older people who pass their test like me (I was 25) seem to have a lot more anxiety about driving than people who pass at a young age.

Driving solo. First ever thing I ever gotten was a Phone holder (Mag lock from Quad lock) So I can use Googlemaps for directions and a Tomtom (similar one my examiner used on my test). Armed with such guidance, You can literally drive anywhere. My only issue is the fact that I passed on a modern manual car with the electronic Button Handbrake that auto-disengages when it thinks that you are at a bite point with the correct revs. Cause my current car is the Lever Hand brake and it takes getting used too trying to pull that stiff lever while balancing the gas and bite point lmao.

A couple of sketchy moments which I hadn't even come across in my driving lessons. I realise now I was using my amazing driving instructor as a crutch. I got myself in those situations honestly and came out of them well too. Practice makes perfect and I am out practicing myself everyday and getting better in my own car. It is still scary though

My tip: take a car knowledgeable person to view a car and dont buy the first you see out of excitement. I passed and bought my first car from a high reviewed dealer the next morning. I brought it home (1 hour drive) and then went out with my friend and puppy to celebrate and the driving shaft snapped on the duel carriageway as we were about to pull onto a roundabout. Felt like baptism by fire, was scary and because id just taxed it the AA were treating it like it hadnt been taxed (not on system yet) and the previous owner was also still insuring it and they didnt have breakdown cover (yet i did) which added more complications to the mix because my insurance company got confused who we were. Ive bought the same type (nissan note) because i liked it from a private saler and took much more time looking around the vehicle. Ive also taken it to a garage (my second tip for used, first time, budget car buyers) because i wanted to be certain it was safe (the car needed two new tyres and a new battery (i decided to replace all of her tyres with mid-range). This is despite the car JUST passing MOT. So be vigilant (because the dealers are just trying to sell you a car no matter what), if you can take a car knowledgeable person to view with you, check the car MOT history (if it has a lot of fails then its not been taken care of), if you end up buying private then get the car checked out ASAP by a well reviewed garage.

Passed about 3 weeks ago, not UK but in Estonia. I had a lot of self-doubt before solo drive, even if I tried convince myself that I wouldn't have passed the driving exam, if I'm unable to drive. After the first drive around the block, I got rid of most of the anxiety. For the 2nd drive I wanted something bit more challenging, so I drove to a mall in different city area, and after that it sort of became more natural. Rest of the drives so far been good, little mistakes here and there, but nothing dangerous. I also checked live traffic cameras to see how heavy the traffic is and waited for a good time to drive. If I think about driving now, I get excited like a kid again, it's much fun.

Francis my man! Nice to see you again! 🙃 Just to double check with you, most bus and cycle lanes have a broken white line where you’re legally allowed to enter and cross the lane but if the white line doesn’t become broken and remains solid then I must not DRIVE along the lane or PARK in the lane but I’m allowed to CROSS the lane to enter for example a driveway or a lay by or a car park or a supermarket or a petrol station, is that right?
@DrivingSchoolTV8 ай бұрын
lol... i gotta ask. mr cheeky tulip! are you winding me up with the lines questions every week or does crossing cycle lanes genuinely keep you up at night 🤔 i can't tell but i feel like this is more tongue in cheek than a serious motoring issue at this point hahaha
@WayneTulip-zm9gw8 ай бұрын
I’m being serious mate, I need to know for when I take driving lessons in Leicester.
@DrivingSchoolTV8 ай бұрын
Ok lol if the line doesn’t become broken it’s very likely a junction you can’t turn in to. They wouldn’t have accidentally painted a solid line across a junction. If you’re trying to enter a property on the other hand though you can cross the line to get into it. Signal early to let the vehicles behind know you’re doing something they won’t be expecting and double check your left mirror to make sure the left lane you’re about to cross is definitely clear 😊 as a side note you can sometimes cross a solid bus lane to park in it. Check the times on the parking box inside the bus lane or check the times the single yellow or red line is in operation. If it’s not in operation you can cross the bus lane line and park next to the kerb.
@WayneTulip-zm9gw8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the reply mate, I appreciate it, sorry for repeating myself, I know it’s annoying when someone repeats themselves. ☺️ That’s true, they wouldn’t just paint a solid white line by accident across a junction so you probably can’t turn down there, I’ve read so many stories online about people crossing the solid white line of a bus or cycle lane to turn into a supermarket car park for example and they get a fine so I think I’ll play it safe, of course if there’s a broken white line that shows points where you’re allowed to enter the lane but if there’s a solid white line then I’ll only cross it if it’s outside of the hours of operation. 🙃

I have been watching at least 5 other driving instructors videos for months as a learner currently. This is the first video of yours I have seen and I have to say, I’ve noticed you aren’t checking left blind spot several times during this video. I don’t think you checked either blind spot when you moved off from the car park. Please watch it back I think I’ve seen 4 missed blind spot checks which means you would accumulate a serious fault and fail a test. Us students need to see all mirror checks done to avoid picking up the same bad habit.

Well timed, my other half passed 1st time on Thursday. She was a really nervous learner in the early stages and I'm hoping she won't regress with that now moving onto the roads proper

As soon as I passed I got sent out on the motorway for work in a van, it was a big step up from a car and the road’s however motorway driving is some of the easiest out there and isn’t worth the stress about it!

Great advice about the phone. Just not worth it I know someone who got points and a serious fine for being on their phone. I also nearly crashed when I first started driving due to the phone distracting me.

All being well next week (please, park on the right and reverse two spaces!) I might be in such a situation. The bit that was sort of skipped was the process of buying your first car. I'm currently looking online and there's a likely prospect that my first drive would be from the dealership to home, which might be anywhere up to 50 miles on unfamiliar roads, including motorways. I've heard that if you haven't got the pink card yet, dealerships are within their rights to deny you a test drive; is that correct?

Best of luck! I bought my first car last week after passing the week before. The man who sold it to me insisted on doing the test drive, which I think was a good thing because it was completely different to the car I learnt in, and I was very nervous. I brought a friend who is an experienced driver with me, both for the test drive and for when I had my first go in the car after buying it. I had to drive mine back home, quite far on my own (no motorways), but first my friend sat in with me while we went around the block to help me figure out how to work the car and stuff. I stalled repeatedly for the first few days. My advice would be to try to make it as easy as you possibly can on yourself when you've only just passed, because it really can feel like learning again from scratch - although you get used to it pretty quickly :)

Passed 2 months ago ..Driving my car feels so different from the instructors ..One thing i have realised since passing is that , parking is a whole new learning curve now .. Used to park so well with my instructors car but struggling with my own . None of the reference points work plus in a busy car park you don't actual get the time to apply the methods/references taught whilst parking . So been going to empty parking lots on my own and practicing .. Hopefully will get there soon.

regarding the P plates, I've used them for a month after passing. it's good to use for local driving because people are more understanding of you stalling at traffic lights or struggling to park. But i would advise against using them on longer journey's or faster roads. Often found people overtaking me on the motorway from the left even when i was leaving only 2 cars lengths space from car ahead and going over the speed limit. Without the P plates my driving exactly the same on the motorways but very rarely does someone try to over take for no reason

this is good advice, but when does the fear that I’ve broken 80 different road laws and will have 80 NIP’s in the post go away?

Not only did I go straight for a motorway, I did it in a much bigger powerful car than I learnt in. I know people who passed before me, who still haven't been on a motorway.
