I think Americans are starting to understand how much they have missed out on. Also British people understand that we don't have anything like this anymore and that's sad.

just a bit of background, ‘our’ in the north of England can often mean a member of the extended family. So when she says ’our Eric’, she could mean ‘ourEric’ who belongs to her family, but Granville takes it to mean ‘our Eric’ as belonging to them as a couple.

Living close to Canada in the 70's we were able too watch 4 different Canadian stations. They routinely ran many UK shows such as this. Much more entertaining than much of our US series of the time.

lovely bloke Mr Barker. Many years ago I got to see open all hours as an audience member, between filming the sketches he would grab a random jar of sweets, grab handful and throw them to us... they were all real!! lol

Ronnie Barker wrote so many sketches for the two Ronnie’s he was embarrassed to submit them under his own name,so invented a range of pseudo names to cover the huge output of his writing, following his death it was discovered that he had been writing and submitting since an early age to pretty much all the legendary comedians,tv comedy show’s,stand up’s even stage plays, and if I remember correctly DR who a prolific writer of not just humour and satire but also drama.

Hi E.B., it`s always wonderful to see someone else enjoying this show, as much as we did at the time. Sadly, the BBC no longer produces these great programs. Once again, reminded how lucky I was to grow up when I did. So many wonderful comedians/comic actors that I got to enjoy with my family.

In the scene of the old lady and arkwright handed her an once of shagg and 2 pints of exportable i nearly peed myself and I saw you looked bemused, I'd like to explain his joke, it was a northern england thing, the ounce of shagg is tobacco that you roll in a piece of paper to make a cigarette and the exportable drink was only drunk by really tough pitmen and when he said "and does she want anything for your husband" I cried with laughter, at that time in the early 70s up northern England it was frowned upon for a married woman to drink beer let alone smoke rollies as the cigarettes we're called.

So good to see that some Americans get our humour. There are so many stories of it sometimes going over their heads. A few gags perhaps get missed simply because of different names for things n such but so nice to see. As someone else said, it is so sad we are not allowed this type of real humour anymore because of the "constantly offended on behalf of another. Who probably wouldn't be offended at all" WOKE mob who are constantly destroying British life, British history and British humour. Thank you for keeping some of it alive, because we are not allowed to see repeats of stuff like this, even though the mainstream media thrives on the cheapness of repeats.

I enjoy watching old sitcoms with you... nurse is a midwife living with elderly mother, she has a good job and independence, why should she give that up for Arkwright and his miserly ways? She'd end up like Granville... suffocated and taken advantage of. Some of the references to his mother are quite close to the bone. It is what it is. I preferred Porridge.
