Personally I think even the shown example of nuclear plant was a bit telling. The "unskilled" workers outside were shown doing hard manual labour, with heavy objects, versus the unskilled labourers insides were tinkering with smaller items. Perhaps there jobs really are more similar, but from this video it was easy to see why the former would be paid more for increased physical risk and endurance. I think implementing paternity leave would help "level the playing field", since the forced implementation of maternity leave has certainly made companies view female candidates as more of a financial risk. However, forcing up costs on companies across the board is going to be met with things like cutting wages and hiring less workers. It will be interesting to see what the results of these school programs are. It is a well known fact that the biggest contributing factor in the gender wage gap is the different career choices made by men and women. Where women traditionally go for more empathetic people oriented jobs like nursing, teaching, etc, and men tend to work more with things (and more with dangerous things), like construction, computers, etc. I'm interested to see the results of their experiments and whether or not it has a statistically significant affect on career choices. There have already been several studies conducted on monkeys that show they make these same "gendered stereotyped choices" in play and exploration when left to their own devices. These same results are also seen in >1 year old human babies. Surely no one would argue that these subjects have been "socialized" by gender norms presented in society.

In this kind of financial environment it's difficult for most families to afford the woman staying home even when she actually wants to. I find the debate men have on this topic really interesting. I have heard men call housewives leeches and criticise women who work the very next day. Perhaps the male gender should have a meeting and pick a struggle? On that note I will say that if a woman CHOOSES to stay home that society (and this includes a healthy amt of the male population) need to not shame her for it. Similarly a woman whom works should not be shamed for it. What should be criticised of both genders is lack of work-life balance.

I believe it does. I studied in a girls school for 12 years. Girls from girls schools tend to be more assertive, independent, empowered, and aggressive. When I went to a coed college, I had to “tone-down” my “strong personality”. Apparently being a girl meant that I’m suppose let the men dominate the conversations during group discussions. Sometimes I felt I had to suppress a part of myself to fit in with other girls who were more docile. I’m doing well professionally and I thank my girls school upbringing. One benefit is that most girls from girls schools tend to succeed professionally since we’re more assertive and decisive than other women. The sexism and heightism I’ve experienced in the American workplace left me frustrated so I went back to Manila where I was able to quickly rise up the corporate ladder.

If they were going to actively fight gender stereotypes, they wouldn't be paying their (mostly female) indoor workers more to bring their wages up to the level of their (mostly male) outdoor workers. They'd be transferring half the women in the building to go work outdoors and half the outdoor guys to do the comfy indoor work
@Earth2LalaLand5 жыл бұрын
To the arguments that say that outdoor workers should get paid more; the video states that the decision was made based on a point system. So, for example, considering the weather conditions the outdoor workers would get a point and considering say unconventional working hours (the cleaners would have to wait till everyone has left to finish cleaning) the indoor workers would get a point. So, at the end of the day they would both have a point each (therefore equal pay), but for different attributes of their work. Outdoor labour might be more physically intense, but, referring back to my hypothetical, at the end of the day they would go home in time for dinner and help their kids with their homework afterward. While that will not be the case for the indoor workers who get home after their kids are in bed. So, there's always an opportunity cost and it's a trade off. This is just my perspective and two cents. I'm not here to argue, just contribute to the discussion. Thanks for making it to the end of this comment! Cheers!

Dear “Economist”. Economics 101: 1. If it were true that women earn less than men *for the same work*, then Icelandic employers would replace men with women in those jobs to lower costs. 2. Icelandic employers verifiably do not replace men by women to lower costs, even if by not doing so they become insolvent. 3. the real problem is that men think women either dont have any financial responsibilities in life or have fathers and husbands who support them. But women are no longer supported by husbands and women have to pay the same amount as men to have a car, to have somewhere to live but are paid less. A woman's dental care costs the same as a man's. A landlord or a dentist does not give a woman a discount because she is a woman. In addition, women have to spend more money than men .. not only on makeup and hairdressers but also for precautionary safety measures like taking a taxi home late at night. I am not so sure that the erasure of masculine and feminine is good. A neutral world seems unexciting and bland to me. But companies need to realize that women are working to pay their bills and have the same very real financial obligations as men do.

They are trying to distort the market so that women feel more rewarded for what they do, but as a side effect, more men could switch to traditional female jobs. If this works, then stereotypes will be broken. If it doesn't work, then at least women are rewarded properly. If a guy doesn't want to do cleaning while working inside and being paid the same as if he was doing hard work outside, then he will be punished for his pride, and that's fair

Why companies don't employ just women if they are at least 6% cheaper than men then?
@kevins67325 жыл бұрын
Okay we got plenty of problems with the idea that there is a pay gap between men and women in modern western countries. Lets start with the example used in the video where it was about the pay given to unskilled workers. The difference as they pointed out is that the men were working outside whilst the women were working inside. What we see is that there is an element of risk and uncomfort for the men. For the women that is simply not the case. They get paid what they need to get paid in order to do that job. At my workplace we are all salesmen. If I am a larger asset to the company then you bet your ass that im going to get paid more otherwise im leaving. Same goes with the risks applied to the job, if I have to work under greater risk then I better get paid more as well. When it comes to maternity leave we stumble upon yet another problem. Couples usually consists of one younger woman and one older man. The man due to his age is more likely to earn more. So when a kid comes into the picture, who will continue working, the one earning more or the one earning less? See it as you may but families act accordingly to logic in these cases. Untop of that women are also more prone to staying at home with sick kids. These kids get sick alot in their younger years and as the mother is away from work she still gets compensation, and rightly so. But she also becomes an economic liability to the company. This creates a problem for women and the companies. Women are less likely to get the same job as a man if they are in childbearing age. This is unjust and unfair because they get judged by factors they cant control, it becomes discrimination. But on the other hand the companies dont act like a large organism whose purpose is to do harm. A company consists of individuals who wants to earn money just like everyone else and it becomes a problem for them when women are prone to being a liability. So as you may understand the problem is complex and it isnt so easily fixed that you can simple change the wages. I dont know how we are going to fix this but something needs to be done. From my perspective whatever we do some will lose.

@@TomHasVideo They do that in Sweden. When they introduced it, they found that men typically stayed home the first couple weeks, then transferred the rest of their weeks to their wives. They were like, "oh no, we just made things worse, by effectively doubling the amount of time women are taking off work after a baby!" So then they increased the "use it or lose it", nontransferable portion of paternity leave, and found that even having done that, too many men aren't using their full allotment. Men tend to feel that too much time away from work will damage their careers. And they're right--the paternity leave penalty (in terms of pay increases and career advancement) is bigger than the maternity leave penalty (at least currently). But back to the original point--the backfiring of paternity leave in Sweden. No one was forcing those men to transfer their weeks to their wives, and no one was forcing those women to accept and use the transferred weeks. This is not a merely economic conundrum. Having had three kids, I can tell you, oxytocin is a powerful drug, and women's bodies are flooded with it during and after birth and the entire time they breastfeed. I couldn't stand being away from them for more than an hour or two for a LONG time. The first time my oldest slept through the night, I woke up in a panic, terrified he was dead. The first time I left the house without him for less than an hour (he was a few weeks old and in perfectly good hands), I had a passing thought about him and leaked so much breastmilk it soaked my entire front to mid-thigh. Having been through it three times, I can tell you that their father, once things had settled down at home and I was fully on the mend, he had an itch to be economically productive. Not only did he work overtime whenever it was available, but he all of a sudden decided he wanted to take up fishing. He bought a license and a cheap rod, and would spend a few hours on his days off dropping herring off the dock in town. There's nothing like an 80lb (about $1000 worth of) halibut in the freezer to take the sharp edges off the grocery budget. Now sure, this is anecdotal evidence, but it appears to be borne out on a larger scale in the problems even Sweden is having when it comes to convincing moms to go back to work and dads to stay home with the kids. If moms feel an itch to be in close proximity to their kids until they're of a certain age, while dads feel an itch to increase their economic productivity when kids arrive, then we have a much deeper problem than "who earns more is probably going to return to work and who earns less is probably going to stay home." Because no amount of money would have made me happy to return to work until my kids were at least 2 1/2. I'd have done it if I had to, but I would have been miserable. Yet my kids' father happily went back to work a week after they were born, and despite him being a great, cuddly, playful dad who enjoyed being with them even when they were too tiny to do the stereotypical dad/child things like play catch, he felt compelled toward greater productivity outside the home. Any evolutionary psychologist would be willing to entertain the notion that these compulsions may be at least partly a legacy of survival and sexual selection pressures that have existed since before we were even human. And if they are, then dealing with that is going to be a lot harder than artificially equalizing pay and giving dads paid parental leave.
@TomHasVideo5 жыл бұрын
@@girlwriteswhat Sexual selection is a very much overrated factor in human evolution. Overwhelmingly natural selection has occurred in surviving childhood. Anyway it seems like you just view social policy through a lens of it being an attempt to do feminism or something and making people arbitrarily more equal. None of what you're saying sounds like a problem, people are given parental leave and they are using some amount of it. I don't know why you made me read that bit about you completely spilling your own breast milk all over yourself.
@girlwriteswhat5 жыл бұрын
@@TomHasVideo First off, I didn't "make" you read anything. But if you want to know why I wrote it, it's to demonstrate how incredibly powerful women's hormones are when it comes to postnatal situations. As well, I believe I mentioned not just sexual but also survival selection. I would suggest that infants who remain in immediate proximity to the parent who's serving the drinks would see a positive impact on survival, particularly in the age of big game and endurance hunting that existed until the end of the pleistocene. If you want to come at things from a different angle, what's one huge thing humans and the other great apes do not have in common? Fatherhood. Among our closest primate relatives, all the mothers are single mothers, and no significant paternal investment in offspring occurs. Not hands on infant and child care, and certainly not food sharing with females and offspring (at least, not to the incredible extent we do). You think gendered division of labor might have helped with survival of offsrping? Women mostly raise babies and gather, men mostly wage war and hunt? You think maybe the women who left their kids alone for days or weeks at a time to go wage war and hunt might have ended up with dead kids--frozen to death, or starved? What about the men who stayed home because they couldn't bear to be away from baby while mom went out to jog for hours or days after an animal until it collapsed and then dragged it back? How'd you think his baby fared? You think an innate set of biological predispositions might have evolved to keep women near their babies when they're small and simultaneously compel fathers to go out and get 'er done? I agree with you that Sweden's mothers and fathers doing it mostly that way is no problem and nobody's business. The problem occurs when the government introduces such measures with the intention of equalizing things between men and women. What Sweden *wants* is equality across the board. It's why they amended their paternity leave policy to force men to use it or lose it (and in the process, took away some parental leave weeks from the parent most likely to use it).
@contentdesignwizardry24585 жыл бұрын
This seems really good. I'm interested to see the results of this. Here are my thoughts: If extreme gender stereotypes affect people and society badly, then challenging them seems like a reasonable way to stop those negative effects. In the video they speak of people growing up stuck in behaviors they've based on their own identity which is partly founded on prejudice and social norms about how certain genders act. On that point I agree that a person that can adapt without any excuses that are based on their identity, and that also has an understanding for other people's judgmental behavior, is probably someone who is more capable and more valuable to society. Science seems to show that it is working: Amazing keep doing it then! Kids get better understanding of gender equality: Seems like they learned something about being human, cool. The government works to expose and tackle the gender pay gap: Whether or not the gender pay gap exists, that is great, because it means the whole society of Iceland is contributing to probably the greatest study(?) about whether pay gaps are justified or unjustified and if so how much. To get this right, the government, the companies and the people needs to keep track of the relevant criteria though. personally I don't know which the criteria are or how they are scientifically measured, and there is a risk to miss what is relevant at first. But I hope that the people that are being unjustly judged by the system chooses to speak up and revolt so that there is incentive to keep their criteria relevant and accurate. Companies are forced by law to choose who to hire based on facts rather than bias, they will more accurately get what they pay for. People are less unjustly treated, which should bring away bad morale, negativity and spitefulness. The only losers I see are companies that right now pays less than they should for the work they get by their workforce.

So women would just not dedicate time to develop qualities they have inherent disadvantage in. Same for men in synchronous swimming or dancing. When the best most plastic men are wooden compared to most female athletes. So it's right to catch people up in environments where they are at the similar level of capabilities, so they don't give up. Children, especially girls, are extremely quick to give up if they lose confidence and feel at a disadvantage. They just won't play it

I believe that if they are both working in the same environment, either inside or outside, and are doing the same jobs exactly, then there should be equal pay regardless of gender.

obsidianstatue actually I would assume that since there are less male models then they would be in higher demand than female models and they would be paid more
@obsidianstatue5 жыл бұрын
@@rainbowflowerpower4464 nope, there is a lower demand for male models THUS fewer male models in the industry, lower demand also means lower pay, this is simple economics, something modern feminists don't believe in.
@plokijuh58305 жыл бұрын
@@obsidianstatue MJ Fan is probably right. The lower demand for male models probably does not offset the far lower supply, thus increasing the relative wage they earn in comparison to female models. After all, women cannot model male clothes or appear in advertisements for products meant mainly for male demographics.
