The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Others might have mentioned this already, but this was the song he was performing when he suffered the heart attack that would eventually end his life. He was performing at the Latin Casino in my home town of Cherry Hill NJ in September of 1975. On the line "My heart is crying, crying" he touched his heart, as he always did in this part of the song, and collapsed on stage. People at first thought it was part of his stage act. God rest his soul. We lost a great talent way too soon at age 49.

@Mac Fields Yes, he was quite a remarkable talent. What a voice! There are several books about his life and music out there. His life was somewhat unorthodox, to say the least. He left a trail of women and children-- this led to a battle over his estate and who was going to have the power of attorney to direct his medical decisions. I had always wondered why he was never transferred out of the NJ nursing home back to his home area of Detroit, and this is the reason. A lot of legal wrangling.

I was wondering if he wasn't gonna do the split, but he did. He was a professional dancer. Only a pro or an athlete could get up from the floor with just the strength of his legs. If I recall correctly, this was something of a comeback performance for Jackie in '62. Apparently, he received a near fatal knife stab from an ex-girlfriend about year earlier. He was on the mend for a few months, but man, did he rebound! Went on to do a great live album around the time this episode aired. This very performance was even featured in a BEST OF VHS collection back in the late 90's. I should know, I had that set from TIME-LIFE Home Video before switching to DVDs by 2003.

He was SHOT, not knifed, by one of his lovers. An important difference to note when you realize all of his dancing and active performances thereafter took place with a bullet lodged in his back, so close to his spine it couldn’t be removed.

Saw him in 1975 on what would be his final tour of the UK. It was a young crowd as he'd had some recent chart success over here with ' I Get the Sweetest Feeling'. He was a force of nature on stage and I'll always remember that night and shaking his hand. Sadly many of the young audience didn't know his earlier hits and didn't really respond to his performance. It wasn't many weeks after when he collapsed on stage back in the USA and we lost one of the greatest of all time. For me, as a 17 year old fan it was a privilege to have seen him perform and shake his hand.

@@travelinman Not sure how that is relevant to popular music. I don't think Jackie Wilson comes to mind for most people when reviewing greatest singers. It isn't anything against him, but he was a singer and a dancer. People rate him higher as an all around showman. His singing was almost secondary. Men like Sam Cooke, Ben E. King, Tony Williams, and David Ruffin would probably rank higher in terms of vocals.

Elvis did not "help" Jackie "at his beginning". Elvis saw Jackie in LA in 1966 at a club called "The Trip". By then, Jackie had already had 43 hits on Billboard Charts, including 5 number "1" R&B records. Jackie signed at Brunswick Records in 1957 with his first hit, "Reel Petite". This performance he was really doing the singing no track like others use on tv appearances. You can tell that they used a boom mic for him because you can hear his hand clap and fingers snaps. His voice was truly marvelous! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤️❤️❤️💯

Jackie Wilson was my favorite solo soul singer. When I was in the Marine Corps and deployed to Vietnam, I always had his voice and songs on my mind. Whenever we visited a night club in the Pacific, I imitated his dancing style and everybody else in the club would stop to watch me and the girl I with dance. Jackie Wilson was truly a great inspiration to me and many others. RIP Jackie.

I always put 3 singers together when I mention the finest male vocalists of all time and they are Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke and Tony Williams. No man on earth could touch these 3 guys in the top form

Grew up just blocks from Jackie in Highland Park, Michigan. He knew my brother real well. Our mothers were in the hospital together one year. Everyone knew Jackie. He was a great talent. God Bless you Jackie.

60? yrs later, these songs are as great as the first time he sang them. I am guessing in another 60 yrs they will still be as great as the first time he sang them. R.I.P. Jackie.

What I sight to see! He was overtly talented. Naturally. It doesn’t even look like he was trying. Not to mention, he was incredibly handsome my gosh🔥😮‍💨. I’m young, but I’ve always had an old soul. I know good music when I hear it.
