I always sow double what I want. Extra seedlings are an excellent form of barter currency. I post on FB farm groups that I am up for trades. I have traded for seedlings of different veggies, baby chicks, ducks and rabbits. Plus stuff like fencing, tools, quilt material, future produce, and labor! You could trade your extras for those cattle panels!

May I just say that your speech and verbal skills are so very elegant and articulate! I’m watching your videos, I have never seen anyone with the kind of poise and grace and fluidity that you have in your movements and how you express things. In my mind, this is how royalty should sound. You are a real lady ma’am😊❤️👍🏻

We layer grass clippings and wood chips between rows. It really works well to hold moisture. The material breaks down and works wonders to feed our soil for the next year. It stinks having to bag the grass but its so worth it. And its free. Our grass is sparse and we get lots of sand but still worth the work. Our sandy plot is finally looking like soil and the worms love it. I also use cardboard to block weeds. When we start a new bed its always no dig, cardboard, grass clippings, wood ash, a little compost leaves and wood chips.

Shaye, you have great hands! Strong, imperfect woman's hands, that are filled with skill, strength and gentleness! While we haven't had the farm life that you all have, we've had our share of gardens and dirty work, that always makes my hands look sorta ugly... Stains, chipped nails, cuts/nicks etc... but those hands tell a story--a much bigger and deeper story than fragile perfection....

I love how Stu is calculating the spacing for tomatoes very precisely and Shaye is like "I just want all the tomatoes!" I always start way to many tomatoes and peppers and end up giving tons of starts away to friends. I also have a tendency to plant way to many every year, and by August we are drowning in tomatoes. We should do a seed swap in the Cooking Community!

This year I'm utilizing weed barrier and cattle panels in my garden. Several cattle panels have been arched for vining plants to grow up and several (six) are just held up long ways with t-posts to support my Amish paste tomatoes. I've got those in already (I'm in GA!) and I'm anxiously awaiting my April last frost date so I can transplant my indoor starts. This crazy lady has over 500 seeds started inside! That may not be as many as some, but it's a major feat for me!

Oh my goodness you hilarious with your garden planning on the fly. I spend weeks planning how many of each plant and where and then do math to figure out each seed based on their percentage rate of germination and even plan out each tray. Then I measure out on stick for the exact depth of each seed. Then I measure out and mix my seed starting soil recipe. You guys did everything in like 2 minutes while throwing pre-made bagged potting soil in your trays. Lol we are on opposite spectrums of garden planning and starting. 😂

I love my cattle panels for trellising! They're ugly as can be, but SO functional! 11panels in tomatoes, 5 for a bean tunnel, one for cukes, one for limas etc. Looks like I'm growing T Posts and cattle panels :) Man, Stu, that was a mean little tease she pulled right there at the end. We use the cattle panels for cucumbers and pole beans. Growing vertical gives more ground growing room for other crops. Our best success for tomatoes (and we have tried them all) is cement rebar wire, cut in lengths and made into cylindrical cages. The gages are now going on 20 year old and still holding up. Each cage is staked up on the inside so the wind doesn’t blow them down. The tomato plants are off the ground and grow taller than the cages. Huge success! Panda cotta is the best. Have you ever made coffee panda cotta? It’s worth trying!! Love your channel.

though "err" and "error" have the same latin base word (so does erratic, erroneous) and in some contexts very similar meanings, err and error are not always interchangeable per se especially in this particular usage as "err on the side of" is an idiomatic expression. The proper title should be "err on the side of more" not error... food for thought :)

Patricia, the orchard is on the neighbor's property and I believe Shaye mentioned on her blog that they're cherries. 😊 Now, as for the rest of these replies, I don't mean to be rude, but the responses on here are a bit selfish. The Elliots have four kids, a homestead, Shaye runs a blog and has a doTERRA business, has to homeschool the kids, is probably writing another book, and has her cooking community program. Not to mention she cooks homemade meals multiple times a day. I don't know if Stu still works outside of the home, but I'm sure he pitches his fair share in with family life and has more than enough to work on around the homestead. And somehow, they find time to create these videos. Shaye is relatively active and responsive on instagram, and shares all the information she can about products and her property on her blog. This family is not here specifically as entertainment for us and they certainly don't owe us anymore of their time or anymore information than they choose to share. We don't have to agree with it, but they have more than enough on their plate and don't need to be reading comments under a video they spent time creating just to see people say they aren't doing enough.
