Ok, Allison's reaction and description of the durian literally had me laughing as hard as I have laughed in a long time. I need to see more people describe foods with the terms, "burnt caramel mixed a little bit with plastic...with some...grass and garlic...but I can't stop..." and "...it looks this way because it's not supposed to be eaten...it's mean" (smiling through it all..:-) Food Network take note: I really think we need to see these guys as guest judges on Chopped, Top Chef, or Iron Chef (when they're passing through the US again). From a fellow traveller and food aficionado, thanks for your vlogs guys and safe travels!

Great video! Thank you for taking away my curiosity about durians. As a former chef, I've been curious about them for 20 years, or more. Now I don't have to wonder and can just scratch them off my list of things to try. Burnt caramel crossed with burnt plastic just doesn't sound palatable to me.

Allison's comments about the Durian looking the way it does because it's not meant to be eaten was spot on. Durian is like custard made from burnt rubber. She always looks cute and funny when she is pulling a face at something she doesn't like. I don't suppose Eric or Allison will ever quite fancy a cheeky Durian after a night out.

Had a Durian Boba Drink in San Antonio. I describe it as a light custard flavor with a stronger onion flavor that tastes as if the onion is starting to go bad. Finished it and knocked it off my bucket list, but won’t try it a second time.

Huge respect for trying the petai! That takes a lot of practice to acquire the taste. Do you guys feel the apam balik is a bit too starchy though? I personally prefer the thin version that's completely crunchy.
@Theendlessadventure7 жыл бұрын
Petai is definitely better within a dish than own it's own though 😄 We'll have to try the crunchy version of Apam Balik next time! We actually really liked the one we had though. A bit sweet, but so delicious!

Totally agree re dish! Try Sambal Petai which is essentially Petai cooked in chili and some other spices. Goes well with white rice :D .

Both the ''apam balik'', thick or crispy are nice. The Hokkiens brought it over from Fujian (just the crushed peanuts and sugar version) calling it Ban-Jian-Gue. I still it call it by the KL-Cantonese name ''dai-gau-min''.... the Chinese community in KL and PJ used to speak predominantly Cantonese dialect but that's no longer the case so most would not have heard of or have forgotten this name.

First taste of a durian might not give you the actually taste of durians. It is weird outside, the smell too strong, and some ppl might not like it. Trust me, if u try another one, try your best to feel the taste without smell it, then you can only taste the true sweetness of durian, it's something like creamy or sweet custard. Most of Asians get used to the smell and they don't bother with that. That is the challenge i think for those who don't like the smell of durian.

They travel, eat like a typical tourist. They should be talking more to locals, find out where they go, where they eat. I am from Penang, born and raised and i can tell you, they've no idea what they are talking about. C'mon! Penang has SO MANY different varieties of food, not just indian food! Backpacking/travelling is fun, but doing some homework before you do something, goes a long way. And one more thing, grow some taste buds! Don't be so bland.
