shipping liquid, glass and cans is very heavy and expensive. Much of the meats, eggs, and vegetables are likely grown in perhaps southern Alaska.

Most of the meat, eggs, and vegetables are grown in other states in the United States, then shipped to Anchorage, before being shipped to Barrow. You do get some local stuff in Alaska, but most of it is from out of state.

I don’t know how many of the fresh items came directly from Alaska, but I agree that the weight is where the cost is because flying in goods is expensive.. hence the 40$ case of water

They don't keep the engines running so the car doesn't cool down, they keep the cars running so the engine block doesn't freeze! We did the same thing when we lived in Fairbanks, and at night we had to plug in an engine heater so it wouldn't freeze over night.

@@Psyche0delicgas doesn’t freeze but water in the bottom of the tank will, that’s what fuel additives are for. It’s the battery that freezes and the oil gets really really thick. A block heater keeps the oil loose not the gas. Diesel fuel will gel up.

To manage the high costs of grocery shopping in Barrow, Alaska. Flying Groceries Residents take advantage of cheap airfare to Anchorage, buy groceries (including from Costco), and transport them back to Barrow. Alaska Airlines allows up to 150 pounds of cargo per person, significantly reducing costs. Annual Barge Shipments Once a year, typically in August, barges deliver ordered goods to Barrow. Residents order staples like flour and soda in January or February, saving nearly 50% on shipping costs compared to flying goods in during other months. Mail Order Groceries mail-order groceries with free shipping to rural Alaska, including Barrow, providing access to a wide range of items without personal travel. Local Strategies Residents plan carefully, considering shelf life and cost per pound. Buying in bulk and using annual barge shipments for staples help mitigate the high costs of perishable items like milk, eggs, and produce. These methods, when combined, help Barrow manage the high costs associated with grocery shopping in such a remote location.

I met an older retired man, that for 20 years would load up a delivery truck with cheap fresh produce here in WA and drive it up to Alaska and sell it in a parking lot. He said people would meet him there and buy everything at once. Then he would just do it again.

I used to live in Haines, Alaska, at the top of the Inside Passage. Our one and only store didn’t have prices quite as high as Barrow, but damned near! There is no such thing as cheap groceries anywhere in Alaska! Everything that arrived in Haines had to be brought all the way up the Inside Passage by barge. Everything. But what always got me was whenever the barge was late (which was every time the wind would blow), the very first thing that our store would always run out of, was milk. I have no idea why that is, but about half the time I tried to buy milk, there was none to be found. I also can’t believe you two went up there without something to pull over your face and Eric didn’t even bother to think about gloves. What were you guys thinking? 🏝🍹🌞

@@chilkat_river Well hello there! It was near zero where I live in Montana last night (near Yellowstone National Park). Haines doesn’t get too cold (unless you live up at 33 mile or Klukwan). If your last name is either Hotch, or Tabler, I probably know who you are. 😉 I’m guessing if you have lived there for 25 years (when I left there), I probably know you. In my comment, I was referring to Howser’s (Jeff’s store), but when I lived in Haines, we also had an A&P (Alaska & Proud). That was torn down about 25 years ago. Do you remember that?

@@chilkat_river I actually saw photos from the Quick Stop fire that a good friend of mine up there had taken. I’m also glad that I missed the landslide on Mt. Riley and all of the flooding. Haines has had its share of bad luck the last couple of years. I used to live up on Muncaster Road in Highland Estates (we called it “Highland Mistakes”). Believe it or not, I moved to a small town just outside Yellowstone National Park (Gardiner, Montana) which is almost as pretty as Haines!…..Almost. 😉

I had a friend who got a temp job welding in Alaska. Stuff was so expensive that he would send me money and I would go shopping for him in Florida. I would meticulously pack his groceries into the largest USPS flat rate priority boxes available. Keep in mind that the largest flat rate boxes at the time were 9.99 to ship anywhere within the United States. It is just insane that he saved like 75% - 80% having groceries shipped from Florida via USPS. The post office even got it to BFE Alaska in the guaranteed three days. He would even send extra money to make it worth my while.

In the deeper parts of the winter. * Cars most of the time aren’t just running while people shop. Most of have long range auto start, and fire up the car from inside 16-20 minutes before leaving so the vehicle is safely warmed up… I hope you enjoyed your visit 🙂

It made me think how the locals live and they must be literally cooking from scratch, growing food from hydroponic seeds, storing and stocking all year round! Plus the pay wage in Alaska is much higher since the higher cost of living so maybe it kind of balances out, too.

Back in the early 60's when my cousins lived in Anchorage, they said that just a plain hamburger was over $5 back then, can't imagine what it is now. They thought that was horrible back then, but they were military, so they had the base to buy their things. Then when my husband's brother and his family were stationed in Anchorage in the 70's. They also said that if it wasn't for being able to buy everything on the base, they couldn't have afforded to live there either. Of course, the salaries are some higher there from in the U.S. for regular people, not that it would make a lot of difference.

While I don’t agree for a domesticated dog to spend ALL its life outside. Most people in AK care very deeply for their dog. In this instance it is unknown how long the owner planned keeping his furry friend outside, but it is well above zero there during this shoot. That is not “extreme” for Alaska at all, at 13 degrees ABOVE zero, is not extreme, and that dogs coat is more than capable of keeping him warm. He is ok… -❤

As for leaving the engine running when you’re in the store or restaurant, it’s to keep the engine from freezing up. At home, we had to plug our car in overnight to keep the engine from freezing.

We have been looking for a new washer and just recently at Menards in Wisconsin we found a brand new top load for $680 it was a little fancier (see-through lid) than the one that is in that store but $700 isn't bad

Hi Adventurers!! I did look up that Amazon Prime delivers there. Don’t know if the prices are the same for those pricey non-perishables like soups and pasta? The delivery may be longer than two days, but if the prices are the same as Michigan or Texas…🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm surprised at the prices and how cheap take out is compared to the grocery store. I like how most of the healthy food is cheaper than the unhealthy food.
