To manage the high costs of grocery shopping in Barrow, Alaska. Flying Groceries Residents take advantage of cheap airfare to Anchorage, buy groceries (including from Costco), and transport them back to Barrow. Alaska Airlines allows up to 150 pounds of cargo per person, significantly reducing costs. Annual Barge Shipments Once a year, typically in August, barges deliver ordered goods to Barrow. Residents order staples like flour and soda in January or February, saving nearly 50% on shipping costs compared to flying goods in during other months. Mail Order Groceries mail-order groceries with free shipping to rural Alaska, including Barrow, providing access to a wide range of items without personal travel. Local Strategies Residents plan carefully, considering shelf life and cost per pound. Buying in bulk and using annual barge shipments for staples help mitigate the high costs of perishable items like milk, eggs, and produce. These methods, when combined, help Barrow manage the high costs associated with grocery shopping in such a remote location.

I used to live in Haines, Alaska, at the top of the Inside Passage. Our one and only store didn’t have prices quite as high as Barrow, but damned near! There is no such thing as cheap groceries anywhere in Alaska! Everything that arrived in Haines had to be brought all the way up the Inside Passage by barge. Everything. But what always got me was whenever the barge was late (which was every time the wind would blow), the very first thing that our store would always run out of, was milk. I have no idea why that is, but about half the time I tried to buy milk, there was none to be found. I also can’t believe you two went up there without something to pull over your face and Eric didn’t even bother to think about gloves. What were you guys thinking? 🏝🍹🌞

I would meticulously pack his groceries into the largest USPS flat rate priority boxes available. Keep in mind that the largest flat rate boxes at the time were 9.99 to ship anywhere within the United States. It is just insane that he saved like 75% - 80% having groceries shipped from Florida via USPS. The post office even got it to BFE Alaska in the guaranteed three days. He would even send extra money to make it worth my while.
