You know, speaking as a helicopter pilot, it was hard to watch that scene where the helicopter crashes in the forest. They lost their engines higher than 1000' AGL (Above the ground, basically) and started freaking out over it. Cry me a river you first day student-permit flier. Most helicopters with good forward airspeed can auto-rotate below *100'* . At that height, you can auto-rotate and fly without engines really easily down. And further, you'd be so high you could basically choose wherever you wanted to land-- that being ideally not the wall of a mountain.

Resident Evil 7 reminded everyone that you don't need to be COMPLETELY defenseless for something to be scary. Just the opposite: If you unload your entire ammo clip into an enemy's head and all he does is complain that now he needs to get a new hat, that's even worse. Having defenses that are ultimately futile is a hundred times more scary than being forbidden from defending yourself. The former is true horror. The latter is just aggravating.

How is having a useless gun not aggravating? Take RE2: shooting a whole mag into a zombie that falls down and gets back up then you shoot another mag into his face and he falls down is boring as hell. Having to run away might definitely be the pussy option, but at least its something intense and engaging, unlike standing in 1 spot and clicking at the same zombie for 5 minutes straight.

I said the same thing: Resident Evil 7 has MURDERED the "all you can do is run and/or hide" horror subgenre simply by reminding everyone that it's nice, in an interactive medium, when faced with a fight or flight response, to have the fucking option to *fight.* Trying to play this or even just watch let's plays of if after RE7 was frustrating beyond verbal or textual explanation; a feeling best characterized by pissing on a crying baby while screaming "WAH WAH WAH!! Everything about Outlast 2's story is explained in a single paper off the beaten path where instead of taking the obvious raft you are suppose to swim along the side of the lake to find it in an abandoned camp site up a hill. Yeah. Nice storytelling Outlast 2 devs! /s This game screams trying to hook in all the Game Theory youtube channels to explain it's story. Trying to be the next FNAF, or whatever.
@TheTrueDeadFingers

At least the original Outlast explained itself by the end before Whistleblower came out. Even if the ending was lackluster, even if you didn't find all the notes or read all of them, you knew why the asylum went to shit and why there was a spooky scary ghostie floating about, even if it was just thanks to exposition master Dr. Wernicke. Here you have to Game Theory the everliving crap out of it, and if you don't happen to go out of the way and brave the waters of the lake (which Blake specifically says he isn't going to do because something's fucky) and find the single note that ties the whole thing to Murkoff, then you're shit out of luck. Yeah you can put together a rough estimate of the whole picture, but it generally comes down to "everyone's hallucinating", and that doesn't cut it.

Ace cameraman, brings one battery. You can understand most of the story but the main reason most people get confused is because there is no ending for the game. Most likely it was cut for the DLC. Another aspect is that outside of a foghorn, a giant fucking light and a river of mercury water the game doesn't delve into what causes people to go off the tracks and go bat shit crazy.

The main problem with this game is that it was clearly set up for DLC to explain its ending. Outlast one was also set up for a DLC but it at least gave a complete story about why everything happened and just gave the player an unsatisfying ending. Whistle blower did a good job building on the current story and filled in some gaps from the original story, but it wasn't necessary to have a general understanding of what happened in outlast 1.

At least give a good reason that the player character can't fight back. In Slenderman you're an unarmed person lost in a forest and just looking at Slenderman makes the player go insane. These are just a bunch of anemic lepers and there are always at least half a dozen farm implements within reach that could function as a weapon. But the game decided we're just not allowed to defend ourselves. The fucking Kobayashi Maru is a better horror game than Outlast 2. It's impossible to win, but at least it lets you try.

Blake kicks and punches people along the way. Thing is, he's scared shitless, has no skill fighting at all, and there are no guns in the place. I think we should have been given the opportunity to use weapons, but they should have been 100% innefective. If you ask me, I wouldn't bother to fight back if I was in Blake's situation. He barely ever gets to get the jump on things.
@DnDorBust
@DnDorBust 7 жыл бұрын
Darker but that's thing as you control him you can make him sneak around be innovated or whatever. He's scared shitless but why bother going after your own wife then. What was he gonna do when he got there ? It's one thing to be afraid but the game constantly chases you and the only time you face a monster is in the flashbacks. But I'm pretty sure a quick stab behind someone's back could have killed them there is a way to keep it scary too and have weapons, it's called atmosphere and they had plenty of that in the forest the river lake and even in the flash back. But they ruin it with the chases and if you get cornered you can't always push them back because it's not scripted and so you just try to run past them getting stabbed. there's no even attempt to put in a shove button.
@Darkerxz
@Darkerxz 7 жыл бұрын
FoxFireGirl1 He has no choice, he's not gonna let her wife live. The game tells you right at the start how much of a wimp Blake is. Plus he's afraid of commiting direct murder, he gets chances to kill people many times, at one point it's even clear he could do it, he doesn't want to because he's not like them. He's a christian man who will not kill.
@DnDorBust
@DnDorBust 7 жыл бұрын
Darker I wouldn't say he's a Christian man. Yes religion affected him in younger life to the present but he holds a lot or resentment because of the religious figure in his young life making him bear a heavy burden. Other than that, it's still bull. In direct game play it's one thing to do it in a cutscene that he does nothing or sometimes is able to do something or in a quick time event it's another thing that you're running around and get stuck and attacked and you can't push them back. It takes you out of any idea of horror and instead leaves you frustrated. Added to the very little waymarkers (yes some lights show you the path so follow the lights) it's not easy to really see since it all happens in one night, and after a while anyone, in his circumstance would pick up a weapon to at least defend himself. It's one thing to keep running away, but again, what was he going to do when he gets to his wife he couldn't do shit he was easily taken down and only the other group finished off Val. Basically the game comes off as this main character keeps pushing his luck of not doing something else.
@Darkerxz
@Darkerxz 7 жыл бұрын
FoxFireGirl1 But you can push them back. I was surprised by the amount of kicking people in the face (as he runs) Blake does. He does at least try to push people away when he gets caught, like in QTEs where he punches people.

Played with what? I only see two drawbacks to it. Level design is ass in early levels (gets better later on, part of the idea of the game is to disorient you) and the ending is REALLY trippy and hard to understand. I still don't know if Blake survived in the end or not.
@Kobratero
@Kobratero 7 жыл бұрын
Darker I mostly don't like that stealth was butchered, enemies always seem to find a way to me unless I hide in barrels. The level design sucks balls, if it was meant to disorient you than it did an excelent job, but being disoriented throught the game is not very fun. Another thing is unfairness and chase sequences, unless you start running the moment you gain control you are dead and finding your way around the level is just trial and error. The most unfair moments to me were when you first encounter Martha, you are new to the game, going through a foggy forest and some bitch just starts screaming and kills you in one hit. Another one is when you are chased by the arrow shooting guy, you go through some bushes and some jerk grabs you so you do the QTE and then your character turns around and goes straight into the guy chasing you. The ending was kinda predictible if you played the first game and read some documents but it was lacking, newcomers probably think that the apocalypse just happened but players of the older outlast can put the pieces together rather quickly.
@Darkerxz
@Darkerxz 7 жыл бұрын
***** That initial scene with Marta was awfully made, a terrible first impression if you ask me. I doubt a horror game is _meant_ to be fun, as well. The stealth was very much butchered, or the AI was just really good. A real person wouldn't look at a lump of what clearly isn't grass in the dark and just dismiss it as grass, even less when you're looking for a specific person. I'm looking at you, Metal Gear Solid 1-4. Depends on how you look at it, really

Okay, just for the hell of it... Knowledge dump! There's an obscure clump of information from the first Outlast that handedly explains all of this. Naturally, that isn't something you'd just learn outright, because it's in all those files you run around collecting while in Mount Massive Asylum. Nevertheless, here is the basic skinny: So, you know how the asylum was secretly a facility for testing {A} brainwave transmission gear that's made the inmates even more bonkers and {B} a breakthrough design of nanites created by an old German scientist that leads to the creation of {C} Project Walrider, a sentient nanite ghost controlled by poor Billy Hope, then later Miles Upsure? Well, during the initial testing of all of this equipment that eventually led to the madness at the asylum you're stuck in, they had some pretty weird effects. The obvious one is how all the inmates were definitely being affected by the mind stimulation machines even when they were not the target. It made their problems worse, stressed out a great deal of the staff, and even made some people on the actual project snap. However, there was ANOTHER weird effect that happened, and they didn't know WHY. Members of the female staff started getting reactions in their bodies like they were suddenly getting pregnant, but nothing was there. They birthed nothing, there WAS nothing...that anybody could see. But when you realize we have nanites responding to brainwave transmission technology, it doesn't take much to realize that the blasted things were looking to replicate somewhere where life is born. It may have even worked and caused the Walrider to become more powerful when it was unleashed or enhanced the mental effects of the brainwave devices or whatever. ANOTHER file in Outlast, however, pertains to a doctor stating "Hey, this technology might be used to actually control human behavior, to manipulate them on a broad scale. We should look into that.". So! Here we are in Outlast 2. There's an isolated community of seemingly backwater people, all of whom seem to be going completely out of their mind with religious or paganistic fervor regarding the end of the world and the anti-christ who will ring it in. Everyone is completely unstable and paranoid, and the main antagonist is obsessively killing all children in fear of what they believe to be a soon-coming prophecy. It's all crazy, and what's weirder is that Blake's wife is supposedly pregnant, thus becoming a target for them. During all this time, there is this light-sound effect that seems to have precipitated Blake's hallucinations, and it seems to affect the other people. Now, anyone who hasn't seen the above files wouldn't think this, but between that and spotting some strange building that seems to be in the distance that could be a power facility or a transmission hub, it is possible that the Mount Massive experiments are continuing, focusing mainly on the mind control transmissions. Why not? People are out of their gourds, the light makes it worse, and we're watching Blake lose his shit. Seems to fit. Alot of focus shifts onto the meaning off the hallucinations and the so-called pregnancy, where Lynn is certainly feeling like she's pregnant during a supposed apocalyptic storm, but when she gives birth, she doesn't see anything. The big question is, then...is any of this real? Some of it is really hard to tell, because potentially everyone being mind-controlled into nightmare hallucination is sharing the same rain of blood or they're all having their own separate hallucinations. It doesn't matter. Some of it is false, but some of it is REAL...but in a chilling way. Mount Massive's containment was for shit, especially since they lost control of the Walrider and we don't even know if Miles was dealt with or not. I would say no, and I would say that the fixation on preventing an anti-christ in Outlast 2 is due to a rash of false pregnancies...like there was a spread of those nanites that got loose and were trying to birth a new Walrider. Think about it a second: They want to stop the birth of a monster, somethung they're unconsciously sure will come, if not believing it down to their souls. The Walrider is a monster. Blake's little adventure leads to the birth of a baby that isn't there, which he believes is perhaps a reincarnation of his dead school sweetheart. What do I think happened? I think a new nano-ghost was born, that it was seen as a devil child by all but Blake, whose repressed past saw it as someone he once knew, and may or may not imprint some of that ON the thing.

I know I'm like 3 years late but it's implied in the game that the reason Blake hallucinates his school is because he for some reason is also affected by the loud foghorn you hear every 15 minutes or so. Near the beginning there's a scene where the foghorn goes off and all the people around you start having headaches or something and Blake isn't affected by it this time, but then every time after that he inexplicably is. I think there's a document or something that tries to claim the foghorn is connected to the Morphogenic Engine from Outlast 1 and that MURKOFF is still somehow also behind these peoples' insanity but it's a really obscure document and it still doesn't make much sense even if you find it. The fact that you spent half the game wandering the school for little to nothing to come of it just makes it more frustrating. It's a shame, the setting had potential to be a very cool game, but as he said in the video, the "scariest" thing about it was the excessive gore that was also confusingly sexual.

I think Outlast 2 is the unfortunate result of a game trying to outdo it's prior entry in all the wrong ways. IT's fine to want to up the stakes of a sequal. But it tried to up the gore and horror factor even when the first game already bordered on the traumatic with how F'd up it was. So the sequel tries to rape, child murder, and beating you over the head with commentaries on cults but it all just goes way too far that you just numb to it. It just feels like a game trying to freak you out rather than a world you're imersed in naturally making you feel disturbed.

I can't stand non-combat horror games. I feel the opposite as others, I feel no horror when there is no combat because I know the game is never going to put me into a fight or flight situation. It's always going to be flight... a combination of amnesia and Dead Space 2 would be the perfect horror game. A combat game where you have to hide/run sometimes, but well made enough that you never can be sure if this is the moment or not...

Yeah, my favourite Horror-Game to date is Cry of Fear. You can fight back, despite the enemies being supernatural. And it's free. Not being able to fight back against clearly human enemies is just silly. Even if you don't have the strength to fight, you should still be able to lay traps. The crazies aren't the only ones lacking common sense in Outlast, it seems.

It works in some cases, such as Amnesia where you can shield yourself futilely with boxes and punching them is obviously the worst idea you can do based on their monstrous presence. It makes sense for the most part in Outlast because you do in fact have no weapons and you are up against men with blades; I know I'd run from Chris Walker cause there's no way you can imagine winning. FNAF is a unique game with it's own style, it had a nuance game mechanic for the time and it is a subgenre all in it's own in what is known as micromanagement/horror so that one also gets a pass. In short, it makes sense. However with Outlast 2 you are fighting people where you obviously can punch back and pitchforks are lying ever where. I agree that it is overused but that doesn't mean it is done poorly all the time. Also Alien Isolation balances it out perfectly out of any game by far.

I saw a Let's Play of this, and to be completely fair, the idea was that the village was being experimented on, and the tower in the distance was sending out signals that fucked with their brains and made them religious fanatics, and that those same signals affected the main character and that's why he kept seeing his old school. It doesn't REALLY make sense, but it's not quite as obtuse as Yahtzee made it out to be…

Horror game protagonist: oh we’re over the scary forest full of murderous cultists that might have demon magic I certainly hope our helicopter/plane doesn’t crash for no reason.

boring git here but yes flashbacks to past trauma can be triggered by even mild stress. The events don't even have to be that related

Guy Harrington when it comes to story telling either in books movies tvshows games, it's bad story telling if one thing has nothing to do with the other regardless of some connections. Maybe one can say it has to do with him feeling like a kid again that he can't save a girl. But that's a bit over reaching, there was too much going on in out last 2 that none of it was really necessary. Everyone basically dies. It's like telling a story about going to the store but reminiscing about a time you had to kill your dog, and how it's connected because your dog ate eggs and you're on the way to buy eggs. Oh and then there's a cop asking you for directions to a murder scene and a bat shit crazy lady screaming sprinkles st a fire hydrant. When the game was almost quiet no story telling just the atmosphere alone as you tried to make it to one place was a lot more terrifying. But the game felt as if it needed to ram into your head gore sexual abuse crazy cult mystical shit a loud noise your elementary school your crushes your probably not pregnant wife two random priests a monster that only exist in your mind but not out in the real world. It hardly gives you a break to just breathe and take it all in to make any sense of it

I feel like they were trying to show his determination to not be helpless this time but it's sorta...I don't know. It's like if I'm getting charged down by someone about to try to kill me and I have a shotgun, I don't need to flash back to all the memories of getting my ass kicked by bullies in high school to pull the trigger, I just need to have the drive to not be a casualty of natural selection. Similarly, if your wife's been abducted by a bunch of batshit insane death cultists, you don't need to have failed a childhood friend getting abused by a religious asshole, you just need to have the normal human desire to well, NOT LET YOUR WIFE BE MURDERED BY A GODDAMN DEATHCULT

outlast 2 is a load of wank, its lazy with explanations, its too fast paced, and hiding might as well not be an option, since the enemies path finding skills are insane, its like they hastily slapped things together and hoped we'd like it, well too bad, the first one has the second game beat by a landslide, fuck outlast 2 all it left me doing, was going 'wtf' ever two minutes or less, that should be its title outlast: wtf, that at least would have made more sense than the game itself, plus the first game had silent protagonists for a reason, the one in this game made us want to find the mute button all the time, because he kept breaking immersion with random crap and stating the same thing over and over tediously, seriously, what were they thinking
