@SherrifOfNottingham6 жыл бұрын
It's a poorly designed system, it's initial conception was meant for 3RD person. The controls for it are clunkier than Arma, and figuring out which way you're holding your weapon requires staring at the crosshair... which ultimately pulls your eyes off the enemy. It's also based off of stage fighting, the 1/2/3/4/5 system which is not quite how fencing works, and NOT how actual fighting works. Making your camera having a seizure every time you get hit is also a major crime. Basically they implemented an idea without thinking about how that idea even interacts with their controls, subjectively you can still like it, however objectively it's flaws are quite glaring. You're allowed to like it, but comments like "I never get why people who like easy games feel like they need to bash hard ones" are ignoring the actual problems with the System. You know how Yahtzee railed on the combat system? Did you know his favorite game is Dark Souls? It's not about people liking easy games, it's about people that want a good challenging experience. This combat system is just a load of artificial difficulty, and like the lock picking mini game, it has little to do with actual fighting.

I never understood, how people deemed the combat terrible, all it takes is to pay attention for more than 3 minutes while it's explained and to actually learn, how to fight. It took me a while, sure, but real life fighting isn't easy either. You're no Ezio Auditore, you have to work your way up the ladder, wich makes the game even more satisfying. Sure, it has flaws, like escape. You try to run, but as soon as you turn your back to your foes, no matter if they're 3 meters away from you or stunned, they pull you into their weapon with the freaking Force. But I've never had the camera problem happen to me, because of a simple mechanic explained not 5 minutes after starting the game. *Lock on enemies* Another point he made was you being forced to play a certain way. Dude, it's the medieval times, where danger was as common as ignorance these days. Of course you need to know, how to defend yourself. Or better, how to fight. You can't work in a construction job and expect to get through it with charisma alone. But I also understand that people don't have the time like I did, to sink into a game like this, so maybe that's why people hate it.

@@OrangeDragon04 Because they try to kill the initial Cumans with shit stats and without even knowing how to block. Even the scripted Cumans (scripted to be terrible, they have far lower stats than any other Cuman...otherwise you would get pummelled, even if it was just one) of Capon´s hunt mission are difficult if you don´t care to learn the combat. It´s a game that heavily leans into the Roleplay part of the RPG genre, since you are a nobody with no battle training, but people tend to forget that and try to roleplay as a veteran warrior chosen-one...and fail miserably at it. Also yeah...the mid-game bossfight is a dick-move for anyone not combat-oriented but you are explicitly told it is going to be a siege-like battle, almost as if fighting was a thing you´d be doing.

@@OrangeDragon04 The control issues were probably fixed during the interim. But Yahtzee is right, going all in on bows and having the game throw you into a melee bossfight feels like shit.
@hughJ Жыл бұрын
@@gagagero That's fair -- the game definitely isn't an equal opportunity class-builder style RPG. It's melee combat focused with some archery, stealth, crafting, and speech bits added on. I'm not sure if the game could have been any other way given the budget and scope of the game, as they'd have needed tons of more story content and mechanics in order to make speech, archer, thief builds viable and equally satisfying for the campaign. The game has enough rough edges as it is that warranted a good deal more QA and playtesting than what it probably got. I think the game's general approach to combat is one of a few key attributes that makes the game step outside the shadow of the likes of Skyrim or The Witcher. Walking on a forest road at night feels dangerous precisely because of how unforgiving the combat can be. In a world where difficulty can't be conveyed via bigger monsters with bigger health bars you need to have other systems and mechanics in play to deliver the moments of "I can handle this" or "Oh I'm fucked." Unlike most/all other open-world RPGS, in KCD you can never be so over-leveled that you can't be overwhelmed and cut down by a large enough group. I think the crux of the issue with the combat is that early in the game it feels bad and you don't know if it's the fault of you, your character, or the game. That question only gets addressed by the player learning the combat by 'feel', and that means deliberately seeking out the trainer and spending some time learning it. On one hand that feels very unRPG-like, but on the other it fits well in the genre of immersive sims; you learn how your character learns. Treating KCD like an action game is very reminiscent of what it felt like playing Deus Ex the first time expecting just another shooter. It's the gaming equivalent of reaching for your glass of milk during morning breakfast and mistakenly getting a mouthful of orange juice.
@gagagero Жыл бұрын

I love this game and while I totally agree about the save system (Thankfully on PC I can fix that with a simple mod), the fighting system really hasn't bothered me. I appreciate what they went for by making your character physically feel shit at fighting at early levels, but I think if they did even 1 hand-holdy thing in this game they could have put something in the game saying "Hey numb nuts! Go fucking train with someone! You're a shit son-of-a-blacksmith!" Using the sword and the bow both gradually feel smoother as you increase your character's skill level. However, one big complaint I have, is that once I got to the first big boss fight, fighting Runt, is that I died several times trying to put up a fair fight with my sword and shield, and then was just like "fuck this" and I pulled out my bow and INSTA-KILLED him by shooting him point-blank in the face with an arrow. Realistic? Yea, i suppose so, but holy shit was that anti-climatic and even comedic when it immediately went to a cutscene of my character valiantly fighting him with a sword and doing all these cool maneuvers before beating his skull in on the floor. Lol.
@Sorain16 жыл бұрын
I like to think your 'shoot him' tactic is what he actually did, and the cutscene is the story everyone tells about it back at the tavern.

"Hey numb nuts! Go fucking train with someone! You're a shit son-of-a-blacksmith!" I mean... Sir Radzig doesn't send you off to train with Captain Bernard because he thinks the Captain can learn from your peerless skill with a sword.
@sachigame9246 жыл бұрын
TwoHeavens Well yea, you have that FIRST quest to go train with Bernard, but then after he does one bout of teaching you the basics they don't really say or suggest much to you, it's all on you to be like "Maybe I should go talk to mister tutorial guy again?" Because that's what the average person will think of Bernard as, "Mister tutorial man" and then never ask him about training again. But the reality is that Bernard is meant to be a more realistic means to train your character who came from a non-fighter background. For better or worse this game emphasizes realism and in the real word, a dude isn't going to run out into the wild with a sword to find "weaker enemies" to train a skill he doesn't even have, because in the real world, all you really have to fight is other humans and we're all within the same strength range. We either have skills or we lack them. A person like Henry in the real world would find someone who doesn't want to kill him and TRAIN with them until he HAS enough skill in the first place to not get himself killed by someone who actually does want to kill him. How much do you want to bet Yahtzee didn't even learn about Ripostes in the game? Because the game NEVER tells you to talk to Bernard after the first time you train with him so you can learn that, and while the game does say stuff like "You're shit with a bow until skill level 5" I think it might have gone a long way for some people if the game had started with some notice early on that said very clearly "Yo dude, your character will physically FEEL like shit at fighting until YOU make HIM a more SKILLed fighter" I too hate the hand-holding nature of a lot of modern games, but to be honest, a lot of modern gamers kind of are about as dumbed-down as a lot of developers think, and at the very least, adding in a couple big bold statements like that to get people to understand the point of your game might help.
@kalashnikovdevil6 жыл бұрын
Sachi Game that's fair enough mate, and maybe my opinion will change once I fucking finally find a copy of this game and try it myself, but I found most of that communicated to me by the mechanics, to the point of it making me frustrated with the streamers who were slower on the uptake. So for me the mental thought I have is "Who can teach me to better apply this sharp metal stick to yonder rapscallion's villainous floppy bits?" But I might be biased, because I've done training in various martial arts, and my first thought wasn't "I should go punch wolves in the woods" for obvious reasons. So this may well just be me catching the Dev's logic train for whatever reason.

Beeecause if you apply the critical thinking skills RPGs used to foster until people realize that you always market to the lowest common denominator you can, you can either break the limited save item system wide open through capitalism or looking in the forest or just go to the specific places where the saves are, in fact, unlimited. Seriously, game tells you you can save in a bed, and people act like they need Morpheus to show up and give them a goddamned pill. I've seen a few legitimate complaints about the game, especially the early glitches, but most of it is that games have taught people that ignoring tutorials, not listening to what NPCs tell you, and just sprinting for the quest marker while reminders of your objective flash on the screen often enough to remind a goldfish what to do are all hallmarks of good game design.

Because the devs don't want people save scumming. Otherwise the game has no risk. F5, pickpocket, fail, F9, pickpocket, succeed! F5 is not the game loop they want people getting used to. They want you to live with the consequences of your actions, fail or succeed.

Damn, usually on the same page as Yahtzee. But I loved Kingdom Come. I get the save system being a bit pissy, but then again, it's main purpose is to stop save scumming in combat or major plot decisions. You can just sleep in a bed to save as often as you want, at most you loose an hour or so if you forget to sleep, which is hard to do considering Henry gets tired, which causes debuffs. The combat is genuinely one of my favourite combat systems I have ever seen in an RPG. I get why people might not like it, but I see KC:D as one of the most immersive games I have ever played.

Just make saving not possible during combat? and have only one functional save that gets saved over once you make a major choice?
@Calico_Crow6 жыл бұрын
Oh no, a game I actually thought Yahtzee would appreciate! I feel like one of the biggest falings this game has is the lack of quality tutorials for its strange concepts. Once you figure out the rhythm the game is designed for, it's really enjoyable but it does fuck all to try to show you how it's wanting to be played. Combat requires real hours of practice, which is a pretty fringe idea, but pretty satisfying to start getting decent at. And the save system is supposed to give you this whole like... rest, go off on a quest, get your shit kicked, come home with the plunder, sell, rest, start again kind of motion. It's like that band that all those weird people you know like, and one day you're listening to them and suddenly you just kind of get why people like it, and then to your horror you find that now you gotta be obnoxious and defend it.
@aquamarinerose54054 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can understand the angle of a somewhat clunky combat system that takes time to master, but once you DO start to master it it becomes really satisfying, so kingdom come is on a list of games I'm curious about But if I wanted that experience I'd just buy a longsword and find an ACTUALLY HEMA instructor, because then I could at least brag to people that I could ACTUALLY kill someone with a REAL longsword, rather than some kinda smug satisfaction of a skill in a single player game that I'll basically never be able to show to anyone else.

It's definitely a weird situation cause if you're playing just the main quest and neglect to spend an hour training in combat with Bernard or whatever his name was you will by default get into a no win situation with that mandatory boss fight. @MadWatcher2 ай бұрын
That's my main problem with the game honestly, masterstrikes become this crutch move for both you and the enemy you're fighting, and it's not really a super duper fun move, otherwise that the combat is great for the most part. The combat was certainly rough, at least until both the player and the character get the hang of it. It was quite cathartic going from a weakling, who couldn't make it one round through the Rattay tournament, to winning the tournament every single time. It was even more cathartic hyping myself up for raiding the bandit camp to face the ironically named boss "Tiny" (who crushed me like a bug in our first encounter early in the game) trade a few minutes of chained "perfect blocks" back and forth with him, and then quite suddenly one-shot him with a perfectly timed longsword stab to his unarmored face all without losing a shred of my own health. While everything Yhatzee said is absolutely true, it is all overcome with skill and perseverance. Once the devs patched out the game killing glitches i hated so much, KCD really stepped up its game. The thing is that the game doesn't do ANYTHING half-axxed. The good parts are REALLY good, and the frustrating parts are REALLY frustrating. There is no middle ground.

The combat system can be genuinely enjoyable under the right circumstances, the problem is that the game HEAVILY punishes you for being flanked (which is realistic), and quite a few enemies will deliberately try to flank you (which is realistic), but because your camera is utterly stuck at one enemy, with rather dodgy target switching mechanics, it means that you can literally get killed because a bandit you were targeting accidentally runs past you, thereby FORCING your back to the rest of the entire gang, it literally feels like the camera wants to kill you at times, the enemy via the lock-on sometimes literally control your movements more than you yourself as a player... The combat system could function similarly but with free-look instead thereby removing the problems, with games like Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, the Mount & Blade series, Mordhau and War of the Roses (to name a few), and to a lesser extent even the Soulsborne-Sekiro series, showing that it certainly can be done. That being said, the game is still great and the combat system still has its moments, it aspires to look like genuine European martial arts of the time, which adds a lot to immersion, and the very concept of directional block and real time strikes is great in my opinion.

I didn't like how they over utilize masterstrikes. They are solving this problem for the second game which is good, because the first game combat system is like having a nice cooked steak, only for someone to come in and pour a lot of salt on it.

What makes the limited saves shit even more annoying is the fact that you have a limited amount of hours you can sleep and you have to wait in order to recharge it. So if you slept to pass the night and got into a big fight right after then you can't save in order to not have to do the fight all over again if you happen to die. Limitations for the player just for limitations sake is bull shit.

im gonna be shit on for this but i actually loved the combat in this game for the most part....ist just not enough of a game to withhold more than 100 hours of gameplay

People forget that Henry isn't skilled at combat and has to learn and so do they.

Yeah it was a steep learning curb but I also found it quite satisfying (well untill it didn't matter that much because I got ganked by four muggers in armour). Although I played it very late on after some patches so maybe they had made it a bit easier by then.

Agree. It's not perfect, but for the most part fun and complex in a good way. Definitely not from "fucking terrible".

Oh god. That's the reason why I could never get into Daggerfall. Too Human was the worst offender of mouse-sword controls though.

That must be awful if the combat was worse than Daggerfall.

If you do all the sword training with Captain Bernard, which doesn't take long, that boss fight is extremely easy.

So, its Medieval Europe Smith's Son Simulator 2018? I was wondering what all the fawning was about...

Hey, that's not entirely true, you forgot having to sit through a loading screen every time you want to talk to someone.

Actually the limited save system is a thing, but it doesn’t matter. I just hit escape, save and quit. Done. Come back later hit resume and you continue from the exact place you were.
