I live in the United States but my job frequently requires me to assist people from all over the world and last week I had my first encounter with an Australian. Since I'm obligated to make small-talk with these people, I usually attempt to break the ice by mentioning something that I enjoy about wherever they're from. When I heard the guy's accent, I immediately wanted to scream, "HOW AWESOME IS YAHTZEE?!" But a part of me was worried that either A.) he would think I was some kind of crazy boardgame fanatic or B.) that he would actually know who you were and judge me for being a grown man who was obssessed with video games. So instead I just said, "Australian? Awesome. One of my favorite authors is Australian." And of course he asked, "Oh, really? Who?" I swallowed and replied, "Ben Croshaw?" And without skipping a beat he went, "Oh, Yahtzee? Fuckin' A."

All his co-hosts on his various other projects are Australian. So we've sort of adopted him as our own. The only criteria most decent Aussies have for being Australian is that you want to be one.As Yahtzee doesn't look like he's ever going back home, we get to keep him. :-)

Mad Max actually is a very well written character, at least in my opinion. He's not angry for the sake of being angry, he's angry because he seen the fall of the world. Everything he loved was taken from him and everyone he tried to protect ended up dying. It was pure chaos, and as an honest police officer he was trying to help out everybody he could whilst keeping his family alive. He seen the nukes fly. He survived countless fights, he's seen many things. The world went from rolling fields of green, to rolling fields of green in complete chaos, and slowly descended from there until nukes were launched and Earth was rendered a barren wasteland. They don't call him "Mad Max" for no reason - he's insane. He roams around searching for the plains of silence; a place where everything is calm and the voices in his head stop talking. The thing is that the plains of silence doesn't exist, hence him being insane. In his mind is a cacophony of audio and visual flashbacks, not the dramatic kind movie-cliche kind but the PTSD kind. To further illustrate my point, the guy who upgrade Max, who's named Griffa, doesn't exist either. Again, it's a hallucination taking the form of his creepy pilot friend from Road Warrior. The hunchback, Chumbucket, notices Max is crazy as well. He wanders in pursuit of the plains of silence, and does what he can to survive. He doesn't fight because he likes fighting, he fights because he likes silence that comes after the fighting. He is a great character, with a reason to be pissed off 24/7 instead of just being a beefy edgy guy for the 14 y/o's to cling to. The thing is that he barely talks cannonically, which adds to his mystery and makes him seem like less of an edgelord. In the game, he doesn't stop fucking talking about what he's been through and how much he loves Linkin Park. Leave it to video game devs to turn a character into an annoying edgelord.

Some people managed to get hope throughout the wastelands and not get insane, by their own religion. Chumbucket has his own weird-ass religion where the almighty heavens told him to get outta here and build a badass car and wait for "the saint" to come, while Gutgash said "Hey, what if we live there in the wrecked ship and just float when the seas come back?" and everybody trusted him. Deep Friah had the religion of fire of something, and they were happy. The thing is, Chum, Friah and Gutgash kept going because they had hope, meanwhile Pink Eye just wants to leave and quit. While Jeet, his people were starving and kinda insulted Max, but _then _*_somebody_* comes and saves everything. They kept going because of hope, and did _not_ go crazy even in the hardests of situations.

@@jackgardere8458 I have a stupid fan theory about that. I think Max is far, far older than he appears, and has simply ceased aging. Why, we don't know. Part of the fucked up apocalyptic setting, maybe. It would explain why he still has knowledge and memories of the old world and everyone else doesn't.
@Gatsby_OW4 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize Griffa was the pilot from Road Warrior, that's sick On the other hand, Max barely talks in-game. You hear his thoughts when he's alone, but the game doesn't make that clear (The church mission for example. Why TF would a seasoned warrior talk out loud when he knows noise attracted the Buzzards. He's thinking to himself. When he does talk to others, his voice is gruff from disuse, and he keeps it short, straight to the point. Chumbucket is the only one Max talks to in longer sentences bc he needs to. Even canonically, Max talks when he needs to, keeping it short and to the point. In 1 he was normal. 2 he talked less, but still some. 3 was more of the same. It's assumed the game takes place before Fury Road since he has the Interceptor, and he wouldn't have been alone for very long. The time between Fury Road and the game isn't too long, hence why he sees Hope and Glory in the sewer scene (and the pilot, idk about Chumbucket). He just lost more people he cared about, so his go-to is to just go mute, hence why it was mostly grunts in Fury Road Granted, the game doesn't do a perfect job of portraying Max, but it does a damn good job none the less.

Butterworthy Yeah, it's as if the reason WHY we liked the open world games that came out in the first place was because they had good writing, characters (mostly), and play. That is, GAME play. But then they decided that what we really liked about those games was that they were huge and phisically expansive. So they then did that with the games.

I actually have a lot of fun playing the game, its probably the first game in a while that has had me itching to get home to play more of it. and when i do play it time speeds past me like I speed past people with clipboards. Even though, yes the constant combat can get annoying, after a while, maybe about an hour of play time, you unlocked a powerful enough grapeling hook so you can just take the tires off of almost any car leaving them unable to follow you, making convoys a dream, plus i know its picky, but when ZP said the convoys still have time to come fuck you up, car holding the precious material still drives off, but the scouts and defece cars that are with you are the ones that attack you. to stop you attacking the main car. Over all its a game that i find addictive, but then again im the kind of person who loves to spend hours going out of their way to find all the viewpoitns in AC

That's a dark thought... "Open World" is the new go-to game mechanic of generic games that don't have much else going on, the role FPS and Platformer served for so long. I really liked Shadow of Mordor because it was well-designed, with a powerful driving reason to be out in the world. It wasn't just tons of phoned-in completion quests, "hundreds and hundreds of hours" of them. I also loved Fallout 3 for the same reason, and I'm looking forward to Phantom Pain. They may have paved the way for a new generation of laziness, though. But maybe that means FPS games will be left alone to heal and find themselves again, the way platformers have (ala Rayman Origins, Super Meatboy, Freedom Planet, Shovel Knight, etc). Or maybe once you've been pinned between AAA companies and Steam Greenlight, you never get to leave. ;)

don't see why people bash games like mad max for having generic gameplay yet they go head over heels like generic games such as the last of us.
@Derah_OG9 жыл бұрын
+wait a minute that card Its because while the gameplay of "The Last of Us" isn't exactly otherworldly, its story is nothing short of spectacular. Same reason why Spec Ops: The Line is such a critically acclaimed game. Its gameplay was also generic as fuck, but it had what I consider la cremme de la cremme in videogame storytelling. Usually, good videogames have either a meh story with a great gameplay, or a meh gameplay with a great story. Shit videogames have meh on both accounts. And legendary videogames are those rare shining gems of the industry that manage to have both a good story AND a good gameplay. And those last ones are very rare and far between.

+Daniel Hale The Phantom Pain is good. It isn't a classic Metal Gear storyline though. The characters are great, but there are not enough cutscenes. The gameplay though is awesome, it's the best gameplay any Metal Gear has had. The AI is better than MGS4, and the enemies' equipment actually adapts to your playstyle, so don't stick with one method for too long. I would highly recommend it.

Meme Master 400 Faster Blaster I'm still not following your logic or intent. Fallout 3's gameplay was a lot of fun, and it nicely fed into the player's growth in the world (e.g. finally being able to take on the Legion soldiers in NV with a mix of stats, equipment and strategy). What specifically are you trying to say about Fallout 3 in terms of this topic? It feels like you're just here to vent and this was the random place you landed. :(

I liked it. For a movie IP game the perfectly adequate sandbox was wonderfully adequate. The convoy battles were on occasion exhilarating. The dust storms that once trapped me while trying to take a stronghold or whatever kinda shook up the gameplay and felt very interesting. The limited resources made it a tough feeling survival of post apocalyptic australia or wherever for the first five minutes, until you get some upgrades to make everything last 5x longer which is a shame. And the haunted by your past story, especially relating to romantic partners, always hits the spot for me.

The dust storms for me was just an opportunity to get a shit ton of scrap within a very short amount of time. I'd pin them down with a harpoon so that when I got close enough to hit the bloody crates they would not bugger off somewhere else, forcing me to get back in my Magnum Opus and chase them down again. Course even with that things proved interesting cause while in the process of busting open these crates and collecting the loot I had to play dodge ball with the shit the storm regularly flung at me which would do substantial amounts of damage and smack me back a few feet. It often left me questioning if these storms were sentient as they kept flinging debris and bolts of lighting at me as if it had some sort of unknown blood feud with Max it wanted to settle. Biggest trick I learned is that while during the looting process point your camera towards the opposite direction the wind is blowing so you can see the shit the storm is flinging at you ahead of time and dodge out of the way.

I think the trouble with most Mad Max-type games (including miniatures games) is that they're missing a pretty crucial piece of the action. They get the ramshackle cars, the rough and tumble melee and the shooting but the miss the fact it's all happening on cars. The characters are always climbing around on the outside of vehicles, doing parkour shit and everyone always seems to miss that.

Oi, Mad Max is frikin gold, mate! No, but seriously, after I upgraded the shotgun to third person shooter level, it was this one thing that bothered me: buddy, I just shot your friend there next to you, why the hell are you still throwing rocks at me instead of making dust behind you? But I don't think there's anything to be frustrated about in this game. If you want to roam around the map, raid, pillage, and destroy stuff for scrap (which I enjoyed a lot, maybe too much), you can do that, otherwise you can just follow the main plot and/or side missions and have no trouble about it. However, despite what some reviewers say, the game gets a thougher towards the end, and there is a reason for upgrading. In my opinion, it's a wee above just "meh", but every opinion is subjective, so... I loved 007 Blood Stone. There!

ahtzee, here a fun fact (that you may not know) Mad Max, "The Road Warrior", was an influence on the 'entire' Fallout series ( that count for fallout 3, New Vegas fallout 4). Anyways I think this was game was mindless fun ( kind of like Sanit Row is)
@Nixel859 жыл бұрын
I think he just meant Mad Max as a video game model. Max may have influenced the desert apocalypse theme, but many games already used the theme to death before Mad Max joined the party.

+The Pickles This guy's talking about the original film. Many items and/or props and scenery (such as the Sawn off shotgun, if I remember correctly) in the Fallout games have similar appearances to their counterparts in "Mad Max: the Road Warrior".
@JunohProductions9 жыл бұрын
+The Pickles Mad Max has been using that theme since the early 80s(I don't think the first movie counts, to be honest). What games came out before Mad Max 2 which use a similar theme? Wasteland came out in 88 and that's considered one of the first post-apocalypse games out there.
@Megafreakx39 жыл бұрын
+Junoh Productions I haven't really gotten into/ into of Mad Max before I started playing FO earlier this year and even than i didn't give it much thought before I heard of MM:Road Fury. Yeah I kind of forgot about Wasteland ( I am still new to the FO games).

In a storm you can find 3 large boxes with scrap flying around. If you use your hock and drag them behind some rock so you can open them without getting hurt you can get in total 1500 scrap from all 3 boxes. So sand and lighting storms in Mad Max means "cashing".

@semimad1002 жыл бұрын
I'm sure someone else already stated this but, if you are playing this game. the reason for the sandstorms besides just a random cool event is that there are these boxes you can break in them. if you break them they have like 1500 scrap inside(i dont remember exactly how much actually. maybe its just 500 per box and i normally get 3 per storm). its deff enough tho that its worth doing. its good to hook the box with your harpoon thing and drag it to a wall or cliffside that it cannot blow away from and then either break it there and get out quickly and get the scrap OR just leave it and get as many boxes as you can to that same area and then break them all after the storm passes. its by far the fastest way to get scrap in the game.

It's only held up by the fact that it _isn't_ a shit movie licensed game. If Mad Max was never a movie, and this was a wholly original world, this game would suffer far more harsh criticism

I kinda feel like this game's only getting the _huge_ attention it did because of how well-received the *movie* was. If _Fury Road_ wasn't such a big hit, would anyone actually _care_ about this game..?

+Paradox Acres I haven't watched Fury Road (yet), and I bought the game and had a bit of fun with it. Not game of the year standards or such, but still pretty good. (I have watched the older Mad Max movies, btw)

MrToonChamp OK, fair enough.

+Paradox Acres Honestly there is one thing that differentiates mad max from other sand box games which is its heavy focus on car combat. For you see other open world games like Batman Arkham Knight might have car combat but isnt nearly as heavily focused on it nor is the customization and upgrades as deep. The closest comparison is rage yet I'd Mad Max has the advantage of being less linear and more focused
@fuzzygreen36349 жыл бұрын
+Paradox Acres Having not seen any mad max movies I think it's still a good game. It reminds me of post game GTA, a solid open world to mess around in for a little bit.

+Paradox Acres I certainly would. But yes, without Fury Road, Max's fanbase would remain pretty small.

I'm enjoying Mad Max in small doses, It's that sort of game, I'm now 20 hours or so in and I haven't played for a week. I never completed Rage until about 3 years after I got it. And this is one of those games too. It is similar in so many ways other than the obvious..

I actually really loved this game and got quite invested in it despite looking back at it and realizing how repetitive everything was. I've never like the idea of " Car games " and I wasn't sure how this would play out, but the solid game play and rather interesting characters got me hooked, as well as the idea of literally tearing down a warlords territory. I played and finished this game well before I had seen fury road ( which has since become one of the all time favorite movies ). Yet, as much as I loved the game including it's flaws the main thing that really let me down was the boss battles. The very last boss battle was one of the biggest let downs in gaming that I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Totally destroyed the game for me. Despite that though I can still boot it up from time to time and have a great... well, time.

The storms are a good way to get scrap; It's dangerous, but fun =3 Gathering scrap, while lightning strikes just beside you, just before you get hit, square in the noggin with a huge (and probably really sharp and rusted) plank of metal. The game doesn't have a USP; However, I think it takes a lot of good things about sandbox games, and serves them up in a good way. The story is awesome; And it really captures the feel of Mad Max - At least I think so.

+I'm Old Gregg At least tell me if there's a "Big Bad" really hard boss at the end that makes the grinding feel rewarding. That's all sandbox games really need; a distant, hard-to-reach final mission that justifies the plot &/story, but I guess I can't expect much story for a guy riding around a wasteland looking for his next can of dog food to eat.
@EvilExcalibur9 жыл бұрын
I'm Old Gregg I did listen to him. And if you had an ear for subtext you'd see where I'm going with this The game is standard by all accounts. Nothing more. It's not trying to be an experience, but rather a time sink. While other sandbox games try to bring something to the table, this one brought absolutely nothing. Even mediocre sandbox games like prototype 2, red dead redemption and Batman: Tank Wars at least tried to bring something memorable, be it in writing or game play. Disturbed Mel gave us nothing

I spent so long clearing the threads and collecting shit now that I've started the story missions I hate the game but need to finish it to justify wasting so much of my life :P My biggest gripes are that the top dog camp bosses are all identical, when they could have made those really exciting, unique things (that would take intel more useful than having someone point out that a guy is weak to being stabbed :p), and the greatest foe I've faced thus far is the fucking camera that insists on dicking me over constantly if there's a wall anywhere near or if I steer the car more than a little bit.

It's Metal Gear Solid we're talking about! The franchise with bondage lover mind reader that can tell if you're a Castlevania enthusiast, the *multiple* cyborg ninjas and were looking at ennemy soldiers's ass is a legit gameplay mechanic! Even if you haven't played the previous Metal Gear Solid, have you not seen the flaming unicorn that was in practically every single trailer ever? How could you thought that it was supposed to be some sort of down to earth stealth game a la Splinter Cell? Or did Tom Clancy's writting really changed during his late years and nobody told me?
