Hey Travis, old transmissions and old diesels is what makes a mechanic know that he’s a mechanic or a parts replacer. 42 years ago we were taking that stuff apart like a hot knife through butter. I'd love to see you tackle a 62 Cad transmission. That's a jetaway hydramatic. 59-62 are the same. I have a 59 and I used to be afraid of them, but now, I'm willing to dig into anything, especially when I see the quality of most mechanics at paid shops today.

I have my parents 58 Cadillac they bought in 1960 from a Doctor friend of theirs. Mom gave it to me in 1982. I was born a huge car nut and mom knew I wanted it lol. Lifelong Southern California car. In 2011 the minor transmission leak suddenly became a gusher! I easily obtained a complete rebuild kit from kanter automotive, But I had a hard time finding someone who would rebuild the 4 speed dual coupling hydramatic jetaway...everyone said they would have no idea how to do it. Finally, I found a place only about 15 miles away that said they could, and had an elderly gentleman who knew how to rebuild old automatics that they would bring in. They had it about a month, charged me 1200 dollars. Very nice people and 13 years later its still shifting fine, and no leaks! 😊

Overheating/plugged/rust filled cooling systems. Apologies if I've posted this before Travis. I also understand you don't want to spend money you don't have to. For machines you care about that are suspected of block cooling system corrosion especially if exhibiting overheating and you want a non-invasive method to help clear it out rather than freeze plug removal or dissssembly. I can vouch for a product called "Thermocure". It's made by the same company as Evaporust. No disassembly of the cooling system is necessary. You just drain coolant and pour in the Thermocure and then top off with water. Vehicle can be driven while it's in there and the heat will actually help the chemical process. It's not a acidic process, but rather a chelating process so there's no danger of damaging softer metals like rads, etc. It also breaks rust and corrosion down to a powder level rather than chunks so there's no worry of clogging rad passages or thermostats. After two weeks or so of being in there it can be drained and flushed with clean water until it runs clear. If you collect the water coming out it is very obvious of the work it has performed. Observing down in the rad post process or if a cooling passage is exposed on later part removal will confirm how it gets you back to bare metal so that he cooling system can work the way it did when new. Take care.
@billywird
@billywird Ай бұрын
When he was putting in the chemical he used I was thinking of Evaporust. Thanks for the tip "Thermocure". Unfortunately those cleaners also uncover radiator core leaks but one has nothing to lose when the core itself is just too far gone. Sometimes replacement cores are available and if one is patient enough and can properly prepare the surfaces the tanks can be resoldered to a new core. I do realize that it is probably cheaper to just install a new aluminum radiator but some of us are purists and a recored radiator will perform as new if properly serviced. That is if the tanks are in good shape and the transmission cooler is in good shape to begin with. I have bought replacement radiators that have different neck sizes and there would be sleeves provided to shim up the difference in hose sizes and they seem to work OK. This sort of goes with the territory in the aftermarket replacement parts world.
@ElmoIsBold

I like what Thermocure did for my 54 Olds Super 88 a few months ago. I tried it because I was already a big fan of Evaporust on everything else.

All Cadillacs from '49-63 and some models in '64 used some version of the 4-speed Hydramatic. Not a turbo Hydramatic, not an overdrive. Those shift using "dump and fill" operation of the fluid couplings. You normally don't feel 1-2 when the linkage is adjusted correctly because it happens at only a few mph. I urge you to research how to correctly adjust the throttle rod on a Hydramatic. You tightened it the first time, which will result in the transmission thinking the accelerator is depressed further than it is, and the shifts delayed. That newer carb may have something to do with it also. Good luck.

Perfect timing, Travis. This is the first time I've seen your channel. I own a 62 Fleetwood with transmission issues so I'm hoping you decide on doing an overhaul. I live in Scotland so options are limited. Buying a kit and rebuilding it myself seems to be the way to go. I've rebuilt a TH350 before but there's plenty of info for those. Not so much for the old Hydramatic.

Travis, Caddy Daddy is one if not the most expensive places to buy parts from. Please investigate Kanter automotive. MUCH more reasonably priced. Also hate to tell you but the 365 and 390 engines which is really a 365 just larger bore, are prone to cracking heads, and blowing head gaskets when over heated. Us owners know if it starts to get hot, shut it down NOW. Your engine there got horribly hot. I'm so hoping you haven't got those issues now. Fingers crossed.

I got a cleaning tip for oil stains on your concrete pad. When I was a flunky private in the army, I helped the mechanics at different bases we were temporarily visiting for maneuvers. We were always given concrete pad space to work on our vehicles. When we left the base we had to clean those concrete pads . Soak the stain in white gas (naptha stove fuel) and torch it (be careful! not too much fuel!) The flames burn off the oil residue, and the white gas is clean.

Okay, so now there are trans problems. This isn't your first rodeo and you and dad are sharp enough to know that a 65 year-old car sitting in the desert with unrevealed issues is going to test all your skills and patience. You've already gone this far and you're past "committed." Finish the work you know you have to do and sell that car off as a runner so you can get top dollar. Use those skills and frustrations learned on this project so you can be more discerning on what you work on next.

Travis, just a lil' knowhow from a 77 year old mechanic here, if ya think you have a plugged engine block, drain the water or coolant out, close all entrances & outlets & close the petcock, pour about 1/2 cup of old fashioned cutting oil in the radiator & fill it with water, cap the radiator & let it heat up to full temp where it needs to run at temp for about 1 hour. Drain all rad & engine holes, refill you coolant and you'll be amazed how clean the inside of the radiator & engine block will be. Cures 90 percent of overheating or coolant problems on old cars.

I'd LOVE to visit that yard. I saw an 80's Mercury Capri that likely had items I need for mine. As for the 60 Pontiac, my dad had one of those in the same green color when I was a little kid (early 70's). My first car was a 60 Impala 4 door in turquoise/white. I was stationed at Luke AFB 01-06, retired from there.

Hi Travis. Did Pima county approve your permit for the new light pole? Lol. Just picking. I'm dealing with their ridiculousness currently. Enjoying your channel. See you guys at Duct Tape! 😁

Travis... I hope you wired that pole correctly. You know, mains electricity in a steel pole. BTW that phone booth looks British to me... with the crown. Although, typically, an old british one would have eg GR or ER with the crown... denoting the monarch at the time... George Rex or Edward Rex.

Travis, love your perseverance. I'm glad you changed the freeze plugs. I was concerned that might get "overlooked". Keep working it!

I'm glad that Cadillac body in the junk yard didn't crush you. Probably not as precarious as it appeared. Always satisfying when you get the part you need.

Man oh man that car was knocking like a Jehovahs witness lol. I noticed when you were parking it around 49 minutes it will need a rear suspension. This is a cool car. I would love to own one like it. I used to work with a guy from Quebec who has a '62 coupe I believe... Love that sign!! Please show the trammission rebuild!! Great video Travis. Thanks.

Telephone box. They used to be everywhere here in the UK. Not many around now, just in tourist villages!!…and the occasional front garden!

Been there with the pump machining. Had the same on my 59 Cadillac. Had to take it to a machine shop £400 or about $300 total later. Although it’s a much better design than factory once rebuilt.
