1940s cable crane LEFT at a rock mine for YEARS. Will it RUN and OPERATE??

Today dad and I do something we’ve never done before but something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and that’s work on a piece of old heavy machinery. Today we found a 1940s cable driven bay city model 30 crane / dragline. It’s at an old family run rock and sand mine and it hast ran in over a decade so we’re going to see if it’ll run and move. The mine is being sold and this might have to go.

I was hoping you were going to buy it, bring it to your place and hang a huge antique sign on it. Many years ago, I operated a very similar drag line except mine was made by Tonka. Same color though.

I'm 70 years old. When I was 19 an older gentleman told me how to remember the firing order of my 52 chevy pick up. 15 too young 36 too old 24 just right. I haven't heard that for years. You made my day....lol!!

Good job guys. Johnathan W. rescued an old crane. He had to crawl the crane about a half a mile to a low-boy to get it home.

I love the way it sounds in gear, sounds like work being done. Wild how the exhaust is just a hot pipe in the middle of the cab lol. Thing is very cool. Also 24:24 this whole sequence with the outside shot was really cool, I like that kind of detail

Great deviation of content! I really enjoyed seeing this. The in-cab moving parts and engine could be easily closed off with expanded metal, heck, even chain-link fencing would probably work. I would use solid sheet metal immediately by the operator, about operator elbow high. Yep, it should be put to good use somewhere doing what it was built to do!

Had a fuel pump like that in my B1600 Mazda pickup those pumps pump like crazy. Had a switch on it as it would flood the carburettor so i would prime it start th pickup and the switch on the pump

Travis and Richard that’s amazing you got it running and moving.. Enjoyed this video very much. Lots of these back in the day were steam shovels. That would be really more interesting than a flat head engine. But doing stem would be a task. Thank you men. Loved it ! ❤👊👍💯

I’m with you. The ingenuity that went into building something like that back then is cool as heck. I love that kind of stuff. The fact that it still functions is a testament to the times. No computers to tell them what to do. They just built it and it worked.

Great video I’ve always been fascinated by these cable boom cranes since I was a little kid seeing them in story books This would be the first one I’ve ever seen running! Well done to you & your Dad to get this one running. In my country we’d call that mining operation a Quarry , funny I’ve never thought of it as mining but it absolutely is Cheers 🍻

That piece of equipment in order to pass MSHA inspection all the cables would need to be replaced. Rusty and frayed cables are a big no-no and I'm sure there's a whole lot of other things that would need to be inspected. There would be an awful lot of work needs to be done to it in order to bring it back within compliance. I am surprised that. Daryl would have you guys around there without wearing hard hats steel toad boots and safety vests. That is considered a mining operation But it was a lot of fun watching you bring the old beast back to life and see that it's part's are working. The men that use those pieces of equipment when they were new were some tough old boys and safety was not a number one priority. Thanks for the video. Watching you from Yuma

P.s Majority of these old Draglines i've watched all had, 2 - stroke detroits, Hall Scott Gas engs, a Few Contentionals, Buda Diesels et. Gas flatheads like these are kinda rare i think. First one i've found. Btw even if these videos don't get as MUCH views I look at it in this pov. You learn a lot during the time working on things like this and the Journey / Fun part of it.

Travis, I have a 39 ford v8. I switched the 6v to 8 v battery. Lights, gauges still work, better cranking. All old 9n tractors used 8 v batteries. Just some info for you.

Amazing, you never see equipment like that anymore. Stuff was built to work, built to last… now it’s built to last just long enough until it’s paid off, just in time for you to buy a new one. We complain manufacturers build things to be replaceable not repairable, but thing is they only make it that way because our society has come to view everything as disposable and replaceable. I love old tools, old machines, old cars/trucks… things I can fix myself and maintain without having to have advanced degrees and million dollar shops.

I have to have to hand it to you and Rick ! You are becoming one of my favorite channels . I could be partial because I was brought to Arizona in 1966 when I was 13 . I live up in Buckeye . Instead of the rusty mold ridden machines the other channels have . I would much rather see our sun burnt non rusty desert machines . You work on stuff the way I would , Laying on my back in the dirt in Arizona heat ! Nothing better ! Scott 🌵

I worked on an irrigation pump pulling rig. It had 2 cable drums like that has, the band brakes would drag on the drum . That is what that spring was for to help pull it away from the drum. There were cone clutches to engage and brakes to hold.

Your drone skills really help with understanding how each process works. Such an ingenious design! A fine example of how entrepreneurship and determination drive invention!
