A Russian here. I was riding those Urals my entire teen ages 😀 There is no starter motor. The thing that you referred to as a starter is a car-type generator. The "Armor" plates are wind shields for legs. In it's original form, the bike should have an ignition key. I assume, someone replaced it with a simple switch. What you thought is a starter solenoid is an electro-mechanical battery charging relay. That bike is a complete piece of nonsense and it would not start well even when it was brand new. There is a guy in internet, "Saruman" who designed an open source CDI for Ural based on PIC16 microcontroller. With that CDI it works like a dream. Oh, and if an Ural leaks oil - that means there is oil in the engine. You should get concerned when it doesn't leak oil 😅

Dneper is correct . We had them in the UK in the 70’s sold as Cossacks . I had a Voskhod 175cc twin port 2 stroke and a Jupiter350 2 strioke twin The ural and Dneper were 650 and modelled on BMW bikes from the 40s . Build quality was pretty old school and owning one meant you learnt a lot about mechanics . Great video thanks

I fitted Honda 360 carbs on mine. I think the originals were jetted for Yak piss. The Honda 360 ones worked well, straight off. I think this may be a later series than mine, which was 12 volt and no electric starter. If you take the heads off, be sure to fit the head gaskets or, bent valves!! More info as it comes back to me.

I used to own a 200cc Voskhod Tula, it was a single cylinder 2-stroke with a strange large cooling fan on the right hand side of the motor. The Tula looked like a large monkey bike, it had scooter type wheels with wide balloon tyres. The Tula was used by the Soviet Union military for patrolling the Russian border with Finland, the wide tyres made it excellent for riding on snow. Unfortunately mine was stolen by agroup of youths, after they'd finished playing about on it, they set it alight and destroyed it by fire. The Tula was very rare here in the UK.

The bike is a 1976 model. I had one exactly the same in 1976. Bought it brand new, had the brake shoes relined as stopping power was fear rated. Ride that bike 2 up all over Europe (cut the metal plate out under the pillion and replaced it with seat springs from a Yamaha YDS1. The generator was repaired in Germany using 2 parts epoxy resin and my grandmother's oven. The Cossack Deniper was derivative of the Ural which is still being made and sold in the UK and USA. Many were sold to the UN - search UN Ural The air filter is oil filled with a wirewool mesh. The handbook said "when traveling ploughed or rough terrain use only first gear and retard the engine. To start you need to retard the ignition, kick 3 times to prime and the 4th kick will start the motor. It also has a "slickshift" clutch that is engaged using the rocket gear shifter. You may have reverse as well. Message me for more on this beast.

@wannaseethevid Me too. On a side note, we were the luckiest kids in the world for being able to go through our high school years in the eighties. It was also the decade where technology was advancing by leaps and bounds. A 1982 motocross bikes was obsolete by '85, and an '85 bike was obsolete by '88 and so on. This stopped around 1989 where technology slowed to a crawl compared to the earlier part of the decade. They were exciting times to say the least.

have had three of these bikes in the last 25 years, if you don't have a title to one then it is basically a garage queen, a Ukrainian guy in Ohio sold many of these without titles, and most buyers were stuck with them, its a Dnepr, parts are available from a guy in Ukraine, not as old as you might think, not as dependable as a Ural, and is an MT-11 model, the MT-16 was two-wheel drive, the second drive being the sidecar wheel, the one I still ride has all the military accessories, black out lights, spare gas can, ammo boxes, sapper spade, a de-milled DP-27 machine gun on mount, wooden duckboards and in the original Russian military color

I have a 1998 Ural which is very similar. Urals were made in Irbit, Russia and Dneprs were made in Kiev, now Ukraine. The one I have was about 16 years old when a friend bought it. He did not have any problems, other than a faulty ignition switch, in the ten years he had it. He liked it so much he bought a new one and gave me the old one. It is low tech, but it is a lot of fun. I have been riding since 1967, but this Ural has taught me a lot about riding, because although it is easy to ride, it takes practice to ride it smoothly. Mine has Keihan carbs and electronic ignition. It is the easiest starting engine I have ever had.

A good 95% of the comment here are completely erroneous. The bike is a Soviet MT-10 made by KMZ in Kiev. It is most likely a MT-10-36, possibly imported into Canada in the late 1970s. It is not a Ural and no Ural engine or gearbox parts will fit. It is a normal civilian bike. It is not a copy of a WWII BMW as the engine is derived from the Zündapp KS750. It has a plain bearing bottom end, which KMZ used from 1967, 3 years before BMW. The frame is loosely derived from the /2 BMWs. The KMZ plant fell on hard times in the late 1990s and was closed completely by around 2010. Spare parts are not being made and in fact the last bikes made by KMZ were made with a mix of secondhand parts and spares. Though the Soviets captured the BMW plant at Eisenach, they did not dismantle it and ship it to the Soviet Union. They left it where it was to make motorcycles and cars as reparations. Eisenach used the BMW name up until 1952 when control of the plant passed from the Soviet Union to the DDR.

The "armor" that was in the sidecar are shields that get attached on both sides of the frame above the cylinders - to protect the rider's knees from the wind. Great job, Joe! Those carbs look similar to the Delorto carb on the Harley 250 Sprint that you worked on before. This bike was produced in today's day Ukraine under the name Dnepr (as the river name) and is a bit different than the Ural motorcycles.

It was marketed in several countires as a Dnepr. which is a reference to the big river which Kiev is built on. There was a similar bike produced in Russia but this was just similar , not the same, not interchangeable and was called a Ural. USSR produced only a fiew motorcycle models. The most common were Ural/Dnepr (which look almost the same) and Ej (2 stroke 1-2 cilinder bike with/without sidecar). Back than motorcycles were a meen of transportation, because much less people could afford a car. For a lot of people on post soviet terretory these bikes are nostalgic, like a dad's or grand dad's bike with memories of riding on one. So don't be puzzled when you see a lot of comments from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine etc... Also in youtube you can find experts who know these bikes inside out (for example Sanya Chetodel and Moto Sancho).

It's a Dnepr motorcycle, similar to a Ural. Dneper is no longer in business and the parts are not interchangeable with a Ural. You might not be able to find replacement parts for this, however the sidecar is worth what you paid for the entire motorcycle and could be adapted to fit on another motorcycle. Just saying.

I think that every third villager in the USSR had this motorcycle. This specimen is from around the 70s - 80s. 41:06 These are shields that protect the legs from dirt. They are installed vertically in front of the knees on each side. 43:09 Repair kits are always sold for these carburetors. They cost next to nothing.

Super episode Joe! I've got a 1975 M67 so this episode was especially good for me and I'm really looking forward to the next one. Someone may have already said but the 'armour' pieces are leg guards and fasten onto the frame to protect your legs from the wind in winter conditions. I was so pleased for you when the bike started..... been there, done that..... my right leg is twice the size of my left leg.... 😂😂😂

The thing I love about Communist Eastern Bloc vehicles is that they’re super utilitarian. No needless upgrades every few years that introduces more problems. They just keep on refining the functionality and keep those vehicles on the market for years. They sold vehicles that were made in the 50’s/60’s up until the 90’s with little changes because they found what worked and stuck to it.

Sometimes on the old points systems , the screw to hold the point had a fiber washer around it so it would not ground out on the mounting plate

They used to sell similar if not the same motorcycle, a Ural 650, in Costco or Sams Club in the US, 25 or 30 years ago.

this is amazing, can't wait to see this thing running. ive been watching your videos since you were working out of your parent's garage and they have inspired me to start up a small engine repair business. I'm about to finish up getting running my buddy's 1974 yamaha yz80 and I have a 2002 yz450f about to come in as well. had to give up cell towers for now due to having my second back surgery since breaking it racing motocross in 2020 and with me being stuck at home recovering it has been a great opportunity to get started on my dream.

I had a few of these bikes in the UK, a Cossack Dnepr 650 with a BSA Rifle (Box) Carrier sidecar in Black, a Cossack Dnepr 650 with original chair in Red, and a Juniper 350 Two Tone without sidecar still with sidecar tyres which made going round corners ‘interesting’. Loved them all, 650's shaft drive, 6V electrics which were pretty good one I realised the previous owner fitted a 12V headlamp bulb. It was great fun learning sidecar technique on a bike where the chair has no dive (Brake turning Right, Accelerate turning Left). Party Trick, wax the underside of the front of the sidecar, ride fast to a curb, slam on the front brake only, the sidecar tips up, lands on the road and the momentum spins the bike around, get it right you can park like a handbrake turn, mate who had one showed me how when I was in the chair, hilarious! Thanks for the video, brought back happy memories riding through the Lake District chugging no more than 55MPH enjoy the road.

May be rare in USA, but we know the Ural 650 here in Europe. A great original complete bike, especially with its toolkit.

the air filter is an oil bath type , that is a nylon or something fishing line in the air filter , ditch the carbs and make some manifolds to fit yamaha aircooled RD250 carbs and that Dnepr will purr , at least until the crankshaft snaps .

This bike is a prime example of where a bike lift would come in handy. It beats tf outta having to work from your knees for hours on end and aren't nearly as expensive as you might think. Trust me Joe, they're worth every penny.
