I got the M1, gold, 8gb ram, 256gb version today for 15% off lol (part of black week, im amazed that the M1 version was part of the sale). Im super happy, finally Mac`s arent 100 years behind windows laptops anymore in raw specs. This M1 chip is super impressive in every single way, what im most looking forward to is the insane battery life tho.

I’m unsure if I should get the MacBook Air or Pro. I use my old entry level 2013 unibody iMac mainly for school and music production (Logic and Ableton), with occasional Photoshop and Lightroom, and it grinds to a halt constantly with most apps taking ages to open.

Getting 16GB RAM instead of spending on extra storage would've made more sense in terms of future proofing. You can always get an external SSD but you'll be stuck with 8GB RAM.

@@apathak34 Yes - but 256gb storage is a minuscule amount and I’d just need to travel everywhere with an extra SSD. I couldn’t warrant the pro because it was so much money just for 8gb, so same goes for Air. I’m not in dire need for the slightly better performance so didn’t bother :) Also, I use 8gb slow memory on my daily driver Windows machine, so 8gb mac will be more than enough tbh

I’m curious about heating problems. Does it really stay cool. I mean if you have to do video rendering or even just extended zoom calls, will this new M1 Air keep its chill, or will we have the old Air oven effect? Will it just slow down?

Is it worth to go with the base model of MacBook Pro - Apple M1 Chip - 8GB RAM & 256GB SSD. I am not that heavy laptop users and don't perform multi-task. The only heavy application I might use is Adobe Lightroom for photo edit (just as hobby) Other than that, its regular web browsing, watching KZbin videos, checking emails.

Here is a good video -- M1 Macbook Air vs 2020 iPad Air with the keyboard. I'm pretty on the fence.. I have a Macbook 16 inch but looking for a travel/backup/everyday setup while the 16 mostly sits on my desk. Likely will start editing a video on the portable setup and some photo editing too. I figure the heaviest lifting will still be on the 16 with a dual monitor.

Sup Ted! Thanks for the lovely energy and straightforward advice. :) I'd love for you to test multi-monitor support if at all possible, and ideally with a dock. I have the Dell D6000 for my 2017 Air and it lets me attach 2, (maybe... 3 long story) external monitors. I love having my laptop and 3 monitors. Not having multi-monitor support even with a dock would be a deal breaker. :( Is this a test you are capable of running? Thanks! Brian

Help; I will buy a M1 Mac mini within 2 months. When a NEW M! Big Sur computer boots I have read IF a backup drive is connected b4 powering up the M1 I will be asked if migration asst. should move my settings from the old backup of High Serria to the new M1 Big Sur. Is this fact? It sure will make getting a new computer painless.

I would like to see a use case of home videos edition and rendering in 1080p, how long would it take, let’s say a 10 minutes video? For example my 2020 quad-core i5 MacBook air renders a 10 minutes 1080p video in 4 minutes and it uses a bit of fan (measured 42°C right between the 8 and 9 number keys at half of render process) I guess the M1 crushes that time and stays cool.

I am at a toss up. I am an online college student and I am on my computers for hours at a time doing intense papers and research, among other tasks. Will the air keep up? I’ve heard yes and no.
