So, in 2014 the Recording Academy who is responsible for the Grammys changed one arrangement category. That category had been had been Best Arrangement - Instrumental for eons. In 2014, they decided to change that category to Best Arrangement - Instrumental or A Capella. I am convinced they did that because of Pentatonix. I can't prove it...but Pentatonix did win that category 2 years in a row. And no other A Capella group has ever won a Grammy. 😉

They have three Grammys. The first was for Daft Punk, which you have reacted to. The second was for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, an instrumental by Tchaikovsky. A band that doesn't use instruments singing a song that doesn't have words. The third was for being Dolly Parton's backup band singing Jolene.

I love this song, but the lyrics I feel are often misunderstood. You're right, it's an indictment, and I think a lot of people see it as as a celebration instead. "Hallelujah" as an exclamation gets used as a word of joy and affirmation/celebration, but this song celebrates loss and grief. Done properly, it will bring you to tears as you find that sense of despair/loss ("It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah.") They do it right!

I've been waiting for SOMEONE to realize this is a song about the pain humans cause each other...the pain of the betrayed.. and the betrayers' triumphant shout of "Hallelujah!" is perverse when used in this context. The lyrics are heartbreaking.

@ms_scribbles
@ms_scribbles 3 жыл бұрын
You mean their original song Sing? Well, it's got a bit of rap in it from Kevin, but it's mostly singing. Still, it's so much fun and puts a smile on your face. But yeah, I second the suggestion of Can't Hold Us. Everybody but Avi raps in that one and they're all fabulous. (Avi doesn't need to rap, he can just rattle your soul with his bass. That's good enough for me.)

I could see how emotional this was for you. I could tell Avi gave you the chills as well. I have to say that's how 90% of people who reacted to this song. Some cried more and some have more chills all over. I cried when Avi sang the part about Samson having his hair cut by Delilah. The emotion Avi sang it with was so strong. Samson broke his vow to the father by chasing an unclean woman who cut his hair off. It's painful because, our father cut his power and connection off too. That's why it's a broken hallelujah. He cried out to heaven and was not able to be heard anymore. This I imagine was how the fallen angels felt when they disobeyed their maker. They could no longer connect to the love they once had. It's a very touching song and PTX I feel did it the best. I loved your reaction to this. I love to see how others react to this song because, I love to see the build up on their faces.

Hallelujah was my introduction to Pentatonix in March 2020, right as the pandemic was kicking into high gear. I'm actually kind of embarrassed to say that because they are from my home state of Texas and have been together since 2011. I'm not sure how I missed them all of that time and I was VERY late to the game, but I have been making up for it ever since. I have listened to EVERY song, watched EVERY video and downloaded EVERY album, and I haven't gone a single day without listening to or watching something Pentatonix or Pentatonix-related. I am a proud Pentaholic now and will be from now on. BTW, songwriter Leonard Cohen never intended this to be a religious song. It's a song of break-up, loneliness, isolation and heartbreak...but Cohen also intended for each listener to draw his or her own conclusions about the meaning of the lyrics. I've heard unconfirmed reports that Cohen heard this Pentatonix version shortly before his death and called it his favorite ever.
