I thought for years she was Irish but she is acutally Canadian, first time she caught my attention was with her EDM collab with Delerium and the track Silence (1997) which is a club classic.

Fil, lovely track from Sarah. The instrument is a Harmonium which has become synonymous with Indian music. Loving the musical production and Sarah's voice. Wonderful. #QcumberSquad #SarahMcLachlan - Fil, I'm off back to the study.

You are exactly right - she wrote this after a trip to Thailand and Cambodia, seeing the prostitution born of devastating poverty. For me the song means something else, not quite as dark but certainly not... happy. Thank you for digging into the darkness of the lyrics. Physical and emotional, it is about both.

You need release, view Bloodywood's Dana Dan. burns some of the darkness away.

I saw her in concert several times after the album with this song was released (30 years ago about). I believe she said on stage that this song was written after seeing a textile factory in SE Asia. Could be wrong, but that is what I remember.

Hey Fil, I think that is called a Harmonium 🙂 and I think your interpretation is probably on target. Definitely a dark song about accepting less than you want and not getting the emotion you want in return, I think.
