This song was not written for the series. It was already released in 2015. To quote from wikipedia: "The song quickly got a huge amount of success after being featured in 13 Reasons Why, and it was "subsequently confirmed platinum nearly two years after it was released".[..] The song has been streamed over one billion times.[..] "The Night We Met" immediately turned into the band's most well known song." There is an audio track on YT (261 million views), the official lyric video (210 million views), but I chose this version for you, because of the beautiful instrumentation with the harp. The harpist is the wife of the singer Ben Schneider. In an interview Ben said about this song: "On ‘The Night We Met’ I wanted to tell a story of love, but the feeling of regret at the end of a relationship where you’ve gone through so many wonderful things together but you feel like it wasn’t worth it. You wish you could go back to the origin of the relationship, and instead of commencing it, go another way."

I usually am not a big fan of live music but this was wonderful. I'm pretty sure the song pre-dated 13 Reasons Why. My quick impression with lyrics like 'I had all of you, most of you, some of you, now none of you', going back to "the night we met" simply means a longing to return to a time when happiness was ahead and two people were destined to fall in love as opposed to now no longer being together.

IIRC, this song is about regret. The singer (in L.H. universe -- Frankie Lou, I believe) sings about wanting to go back to the night her and her former lover met so that she could have a do-over and not start a relationship with said former lover, hence the lyrics "And then I can tell myself not to ride along with you". Hope this was helpful.

Hi there! I'd love to hear what you think about Corvyx's version of this song, I bet you'll be amazed and couldn't stop listening to his version of the song! The song itself is a masterpiece of sensibility, but go see what Corvyx brought to the table!

When the pain of losing your Love is too much. It hurts too much, so much, it turns your world to ash. When it happens, and your broken heart is shrieking. I would make that deal. To go back in time and never fall in love in the first place. All the good memories just can't balance out that pain. When it gets that dark. When I can barely stand because everything is pain and sadness? Yeah..............yeah, I would make that deal.

Great reaction to a great song. I may be alone here, but I prefer the live version on KEXP or the studio version over this. This performance was beautiful, but one of my favorite parts of the song is the build up during the chorus, which is missing in this version. This one’s a little slower too. Still great, just my take on it.

Man when you said that it was relating to suicide my jaw dropped cuz thats thay exact reason they chose this song in 13 reasons why

Truly if you haven’t seen 13 reasons why , I can’t recommend it enough, if you watch one episode you’ll binge it , I watched both seasons inover a weekend I was so into it. I think it’s a movie everyone should see. When it came out it was very “controversial” a number of religious faiths actually spoke out telling their members not to watch it which is so sad because the events throughout the series are reality today, there’s S.A. , there’s horrific bullying using social media that does result in suicide in many cases. I think all parents and especially Highschool aged, maybe 9th grade should see the series , it was hugely popular among youth but becasue a bunch of religions instructed memebrs not to see it a lot of people missed it and I think EVERYONE, especially kids near that age need to see it to see what bullying , lying about someone , using social media to humiliate someone can actually do. In the series there are characters that didn’t do anything to perpetuate the problem but didn’t step in or step above it either which they feel terrible guilt and regret for , I’ve raised my daughters the way I was raised , you NEVER participate in bullying , NEVER make fun of some one or exclude someone , always leave a group immediately if they engage in it and most importantly look for kids that are struggling , that don’t have friends or aren’t treated good and become their friend at school so they have a friendly face. there’s only 2 seasons but at least watch the first. It follows a bunch of individual kids at the high school and their acting is amazing. I’m a 44 year old dad of 3 daughters and I bawled my eyes out multiple times. You can’t help but ache for this girl while also wishing you could enter the screen and beat the piss out of a couple of the boys. Being a dad of daughters the movie hit me hard becasue I know how terrible boys and girls can be towards classmates . I’m greatful my girls haven’t experienced bullying but still a fear. The song was wrote for the series which is about a Highschool girl that takes her own life after some horrible boys at her school take and circulate some photos of her. The song is being sang from the boys perspective that had a longtime crush on her . He met her on a night when things were really bad thus the night of terror . He wants to go back to the night they met because he could have helped her then, stopped the domino affect that ends up leading to her suicide .
