Grimes: Art Angel a documentary
Back in November, Grimes released her technicolor new record, Art Angels. During The FADER's cover story reporting back in the summer, we sat down with Canadian producer/singer Claire Boucher in her Los Angeles home to find out how she's evolved the Grimes project, the misconceptions she has to deal with as a DIY artist, and what's she learnt touring the world.
"At first, I guess, there was just Grimes," she says in the documentary. "I don't technically have control of her narrative anymore-she very much exists in pop culture now. Grimes as one person cannot represent more than a couple of ideas. That's why I started developing some of the other characters, like really abstract from who I am and how I am."
It's a sound plan, and one that resulted in a fully realized album that details her growth with invigoratingly bold strokes. Last month, we caught up with Boucher once again at her headline Terminal 5 show in New York, where she performed with Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes, who features on Art Angels. Watch them perform in Grimes' FADER Documentary above, and stay tuned for more behind-the-music videos like this one in the new year.

she’s so fascinating but i don’t think she’d go for it unfortunately, she likes her privacy and her long time fans from when she started learning how to make beats and instrumentals as a hobby while getting her degree in psychology. now she collabs with the new artists she likes and makes them beats, her new song cry by ashnikko is so good imo :)

About the art angels characters: "Not everything has to fully reflect you." Funny, because I was thinking the same thing about the way I hear popular music now as opposed to when I was 20. Back then I probably would have loved all the visuals in these videos, but I would have been alienated by Grimes' vocal stylings and the over-the-top club kidism she presents when the videos include a lot of people. I used to want to kind of live *through* the music I listened to- It had to speak for me, and I had to be able to put myself in the shoes of the artists. Now "not everything has to fully reflect" me. Rather than landing on Grimes' world and being engulfed in it, I can stay in my comfortable spaceship and orbit around Grimesworld. I get to pick and choose what elements and traces of all sorts of music that I like, and I'm not so constrained or annoyed by stuff that doesn't help me define myself to other people, or make me feel like I'm somehow a part of the crowd that has an artist or group of them as it's leader and idol. I turned from a follower into a wandering explorer. So it's pretty cool to hear Grimes say the same kind of thing, especially at such a young age and as an "idol." If she follows through on that instinct, she might even be able to popularize the kind of performance art that is now trapped in the museums and art schools- never seen by any but a handful of people- because it's too damn confusing, even for people who are trying REALLY hard to understand what's going on. Maybe we've found our EDM version of David Bowie? At any rate, I'm going to keep checking in to see what she's up to.

I agree, so many people just flame musicians endlessly. I really love Grimes/Claire/c and have loved her music/art for years now. Watching these interviews has made me respect her and follow her work so much more. I find it sad seeing so much extensive hate when, generally, "smaller" artists like her usually have tons of support from their fanbase. She's a human and she seems very kind. I loved the interview.
@catwhisperer9524
@catwhisperer9524 2 жыл бұрын
For those complaining about her use of the word "like", It seems her use of it might be due to using filler words to occupy what would otherwise be awkward silence while trying to gather racing thoughts. You can tell in every interview she struggles to find words. Also if you listen closely, along with the "like" is and idea, thought, feeling or belief she really really really wants to get across. I believe it's more like a cue word. I use "You know.." and "like" a lot also bc it triggers my brain to stop long enough and it buys myself enough time to form a coherent sentence.

***** I mean I could see where she coming from. It's like if people refer to you as cute they don't take you serious. Almost like when you call a baby cute even when it has food smeared all over they face. But she has a very beautiful face.
@anxietyminx
@anxietyminx 8 жыл бұрын
+cannibalholocaust I dont think she means she hates being complimented on her appearance. I feel like the word "cute" has two different meanings here and in the industry, they use the meaning that is almost belittling of her character and craft. Hence why she said "a cute kitten" in the definition. When you're trying to make a point, or whenever you're very serious about something, the last thing you want to be called is "cute" because it sounds like you're not being taken seriously. I think that's where she's coming from. I could be wrong though.
@AlonsoMontero

I've always thought she's cute, but after watching this I understand why she hates the term. It just sounds condescending when you get to know what she's been through as an artist/producer.

@I'm talking about a musician, her talent, the influence she has on her fanbase and comparing her to a different musician. But hey, don't mind me, I'm just a 'fool people' and apparently need some growing up to do. I guess her boyfriends, tabloids and possible offspring are much more relevant. Thanks for the information anyway!
