I know you said you don’t think anyone is clambering to hear you talk about murikami but I would. I find a lot of the fantasy channels are an echo chamber of the all the same books and the thing I like most about your channel is I hear about books I’ve never considered. Now I’ve read remains of the day and cloud atlas with demon copperhead on deck. Keep being original brother!

Glad you read A Pale View of Hills, Jimmy! Especially before Never Let Me Go, because I think with at least Pale View and Remains under your belt, you're primed to not be wowed by Never Let Me Go (don't mind me, I'm just bitter because I think Never Let Me Go attempts similar things to both those novels but much worse which is why it bothers me that it's his most famous and Pale View especially is so underrated compared). But seriously, A Pale View of Hills is so good, written so subtly and with a deft hand that if you miss a single, crucial sentence, you might not even realise there is a "twist", per se. I especially love the dialogue in that book, the way characters talk past one another, repeat themselves as to say so much more than their actual words convey. Don't skip out on An Artist of the Floating World, either! Great chat, as always.

Happy wedding anniversary! First Bookish and now Talking Story! I'm enjoying these Texas booktubers. You haven't read Vonnegut yet! 🤯 Now I don't book shame but I did assume with this lit fic kick of yours that you had already read Vonnegut. I'm kinda jealous. I wish I could read Vonnegut with fresh eyes in my 30s. You are gonna love his stuff. Talking Story is right about Slaughterhouse Five. It is so different for every person that reads it. But I think you should start with Breakfast if Champions of you are going to read Vonnegut. That is a Jimmy book. I need to make time for some GGK. I have a copy of To Ride Hell's Chasm and I really want to give it a go. This was a great episode!

I thought the plot twist for A Pale View of Hills was fantastic, just wish I got more from it along the way. Kinda put me in mind of the movie Lake Mungo in that regard. Definitely a great read for any writer though just by how much you can learn from Ishiguro blindsiding the reader even while using such simple and clear prose

I’ve seen you (Jimmy) mention that you want to read War and Peace several times now. I read it not long after reading Stormlight Archive and it reads fast and is super easy to get through despite its length. It felt like a Stormlight book in its epic scope and pacing (pacing is probably actually closer to a faster paced Stormlight book like WoR) and I never wanted to put it down. It helps that the chapters take about 5 mins to read, so I kept saying “just one more” until I had binged it in 10 days or so. I don’t think it warrants the daunting feeling everyone has before they start, the only caveat being that Russian names can be a bit confusing with their different variations. It’s WAY easier to read than Malazan, for instance, which I’m reading now. I’d say you should take a crack at it and I think you’ll love it based on everything else you seem to enjoy.

@@thefantasynuttwork The Anthony Briggs translation from the penguin classics edition was great - I really enjoyed how he did the notes and the internal French translation for easy readability. I’ve also heard really good things about the P + V translation.

Jimmy so happy to hear your thoughts on Swan Song was exactly like mine, there are not too many of us that feel the 2nd half was cheesy!! I loved the first half. John convinced me to read Speaks the Night Bird too. I loved 3/4th of the book… again a cheese factor in the form of a bear ruined the ending for me. But the first few chapters are so truly scary I wanted to cover my eyes.😱

​@@thefantasynuttwork Yeah that obviously fine even I don't love all of his humor; he's said that he purposely tries to write different kinds so I don't think all of its going to work for just about anybody - but I find it strange when people say that ALL of its horrible - like, do you really think Wit isn't at least a bit clever? And I've never seen that opinion (that all of his humor is bad) outside of this little sphere of booktube, but it seems to be pretty common here, and I don't know why that is.

Jimmy check out Martin McDonagh's In Bruges. A dark comedy about two hitmen (Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell) fleeing to Bruges after a botched job and anxiously (well, one of them is) awaiting further orders. His brother John Michael McDonagh is also a successful playwright and filmmaker in his own right with stuff like The Guard (starring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle), I'm not sure if it still is but it was at one point Ireland's most successful indie film.

In Bruges is a contender of best film for me, and Martin's always got something unique to say - would love to find his plays. I've started getting into John Michael's films to; the Gurard was enjoyable, but Calvary (with Gleeson again) hits you like a ton of bricks, it's up there with his brother's work.

Ok is great way to put how Swan Song is. That's how I felt. It wasn't horrible, but it is not great. I am glad I read it, but I will never return to it. The weakest McCammom I have read.
