I remember when visiting Amish Country as a child in the early 70s, but not for the reasons you may think. My parents and I ate in a family style Amish restaurant where people were seated at large table, often with strangers. My father began talking with the man across the table from us. He seemed worried and preoccupied, but was polite. He told us that he worked in DC and intriguingly declined to answer questions about his work. A few months later we learned that we had been eating dinner with Charles Colson, one of Nixon’s inner circle and his “hatchet man.” No wonder he was preoccupied. But by God’s grace, Mr. Colson was saved and began a prison ministry. Isn’t that just like God-setting captives free!

We love visiting Amish farms and here in Northeast Ohio , Holmes County area is home to the largest population of Amish and Mennonites. A beautiful country to visit. There are several types of orders of Amish , Some have telephones in their homes and some drive cars. A ultra conservative sect called Swartzentruber Amish don’t have gas/ propane kitchen stoves , only wood burning stoves. Most amish have and use gas-propane stoves and refrigerators. If you ever get a chance to vacation and see Ohio Amish county check out the villages of Charm, Berlin and Walnut Creek, Ohio. With all the cheese makers, dairy farms and hardware stores.

I live in PA Amish country! I’m so Blessed too bc I get all my bulk kitchen supplies from an Amish store, my plants & produce I don’t grow from their greenhouse/farm stand. Today I made Pennsylvania Dutch ham pot pie for supper. I was raised on PA Dutch food! Sweetest ppl on the planet. Chicken & waffles (PA Dutch way-not southern way) roasted chicken(not fried chicken) in gravy over waffles & mashed potatoes is a very Pa Dutch recipe. I get my bread flour from their store, but they won’t share their bread recipe the store sells. I wouldn’t either. 😂

The smell of bread in the oven baking makes one so hungry. Homemade bread was very common over the years both my Mom and Grandmother baked homemade bread weekly. The Amish way of life my Dad told was the way many people lived at one time. Both my parents went to one room school houses their elementary school years and public high school. Both grew up use to meals fixed on wood cooking stove.

Great video. Having been Mennonite in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, I was raised with the Amish. My closest friends are Amish, and I have lived with them. You were correct on everything, especially the brown butter and the Amish spread. However, we do use wider needles and dark Karo or Golden Barrel molasses. A meal after church is always the same. Always. To the homemade bread and spread, we add homemade pickles, pickled red beets and pickled eggs, white American cheese, Lebanon Bologna, cookies, and Shoofly pie. Also, there is homemade jam and sometimes fruit salad. We never vary. Never. Yes, it is a good way of life. Instead of tv and movies, hymn sings, visiting family and neighbors, and reading the Bible is paramount.

I’ve lived around large Amish communities all my life, so it’s not a novelty for me, but I’m still amazed at how hard they work without tractors or equipment to farm. Their yards are always perfectly tailored & full of flowers. They don’t use banks, except cash only, don’t have health insurance or anything, & pay cash for everything. That’s another lesson we could benefit from learning.

Several years ago we camped about a week in Lancaster Pennsylvania. We loved driving around looking at the neat farms. We also passed several schools and visited an Amish family in their home for a Q and A. It was very interesting to find out the children only go through 8 th grade. Also for their monthly church service, it rotates from house to house where the women of the house spend the week with aunts and cousins helping to prepare pies and such for the meal. A wagon brings the benches for the service in a room that has sliding doors to make more room. We found out a lot of interesting things. Your bread and chicken noodles look good.

The best smells are coffee perking, bacon cooking, bread or hard salami baking! A tip I've learned...I slice through the meat a few times with a butter knife when canned in larger chunks to both break it apart and help it to come out of the jar more readily. I drink coffee every evening.

I have a friend who has a beautiful home they redid. She had a situation where the police had to come in… she was looking at the photos the police took and she said to her husband, “look how nice our bedroom looks. I told ya you should always make your bed up!” Lol she said, see? The beds made lol I need to box up some Christmas stuff and mail it to my kids. I have way more than I need and haven’t put up a tree in many years or decorated. I always wonder if they’d even want them. Everybody has their own way of decorating. It’s good your kids appreciate them. I had a friend long ago in way upstate ny in adirondacks who left her tree up till after Valentine’s Day! She took the ornaments off and left the lights and put valentines on it. Haven’t thought of that in years. Those were long cold winters so I guess it made it happier plus her kids were little.

Farm after farm… they came to our farm to buy horse drawn manure spreaders and equipment and buddy’s etc from my dad. We went to their store and sone of their farms. Kind of became close to them.I loved it also. They are good people. No electricity no cars very basic. The women would come in and sit by the wood comatose in our kitchen in a rocker and it’s their babies where it was warm while their husbands did business with my dad outside. We lived very close to how they did except for our dress and we had moser conveniences but yeah…

Leslie I've had the same fascination with the Amish since I was young. I admire their dedication to what they believe, though I don't share their belief system, and I admire their work ethic! My granddaughter attends a charter school and plays on the 5th grade basketball team. One of the schools they play is an Amish school and most of the parents bring their children to the gym on tractors, some on horses, some walk. The girls get out on the court to play ball in their dresses and caps. Their work ethic spills over into their sports they play and so far we've been beat by them twice! The best part about playing an Amish school is the goodies they sell in the concession stand, like homemade fried pies!

My dear dad would mix karo pancake syrup with pb and eat (with) NOT on bread. Not as a bread spread, just as a treat. I got neighborhood kids to do it. And I raised me kids to have it as a treat. 🙋‍♀️

That brought back a beautiful memory of my grandmother. She would make a big pan of biscuits. She’d get a bowl and put peanut butter, dark Karo Syrup and her homemade butter and mix it together. She’d put that on hot biscuits and oh my goodness, it was DELICIOUS. I sure wish I had that right now. Blessings to you and your family and Happy New Year.

My mom used to eat peanut butter and pickle sandwiches…😳 I admit that I’ve never tried it, but I always thought it was weird. How I miss making loaves of bread!!! Since going gluten free 10 years ago, whenever I make the gluten free bread, there is no kneading involved because it’s such a gloppy, sticky batter. I was imagining the aroma of yeast bread wafting in your kitchen..😉 Bring on the jokes, Pastor Bryant! The cornier, the better…🤣🤣🤣 Your video has been a treat! -Brenda

I took all of my Christmas decorations down today, and put them away. I make my bed right after I get up, every day. It seems like the room is “unfinished” if I don’t make my bed lol.
