The worst thing is when someone buys a dog not knowing their temperament of the breed, what the breed was made for, and then wondering why the dog is completely acting up if the life style doesn't stimulate the dogs mind and natural drive. The whole "guard dog" thing is just silly. Most people would be be better served with a retriever at most instead of a working line/ breed of dog. Great video. People just don't know how much these dogs require, especially Belgians.

So many Malinois end up in high kill shelters before a select few are pulled by Malinois rescues or adopted by people like me who have the necessary training skillset to manage potential behavioral issues. This is why it's important to add the following to not discourage a potential Malinois owner who might enjoy a lower drive dog. That said, everyday pet quality Malinois absolutely do exist, some of these lower drive dogs just want to nap next to you while you read or watch TV. There are a more medium drive Malinois, these dogs are often better suited to scent work activities or other sports like dock diving, agility etc. You still need to keep the dog mentally stimulated and work them with physical exercises even though they're not the high drive over the top working line prey drive type that are typical of the breed, they all need exercise and engagement work. This is why if a person can't handle a Malinois exhibiting a high prey drive then please adopt an adult from a Malinois rescue, they will match the dog's personality to the reasonable expectations of the human. With an adult dog, you will know exactly what your dog's personality will be.

For years I was on a search and rescue team that trained search dogs to pass their IPWADA Test (International police working dog association) We had a blue heeler come through the training who could do something I’ve never seen any other dog do. We would work sometimes in heavy snow and the little heeler would launch into the snow and completely bury herself, then start tunneling like bugs bunny digging her way to Pismo beach. The thing was the dog stayed exactly on scent, like she could somehow smell the search subject through all that snow. Amazing!

We need to work on recall for our Malinois / Dutch Shepherd Mix. I think she jumped on the FedEx guy when she was a puppy...she ran around the corner to greet him...then I heard a yelp and she came running back...the FedEx guy obviously did something to hurt her. Now, whenever the FedEx guy delivers a package to our house (we live on 20 acres), if we are outside working and we can't get to her, she will chase his car all the way down the driveway and half way down the private road. She won't chase the UPS guy or the USPS delivery person...just the FedEx guy and no amount of calling or yelling or anything works.....not even the E collar works when she is chasing him or a deer or squirrel. Our Border Collie - same age - 1 1/2 years old - will come right back to us when called if she starts to chase the deer or a squirrel. I am not sure why she listens and the Malinois mix does not since Border Collies typically have a high chase drive as well.

Training a working dog is about 90% training the handler and 10% the dog. Also, be prepared to spend several hours a day working with your pup. If you have a high drive dog and you DON’T work them. They will find ways to work themselves. Often in destructive ways. Consistency and repetition are the name of the game. By building a good solid foundation you can get to this point you see. My guess is what we are seeing is the result of literally hundreds of hours of work.

Have you ever been in a situation when a dog in training skips hitting the sleeve and goes for some other body part of the stimulus person? Seems to me that smart dogs might try that. Nice video for dog owners - too bad the ignorant ones who don’t know how little they know will probably never watch it. I have an Australian Cattle Dog who is reactive to certain things. He is not a fighter but has no dog or people friends - very territorial. I used to have Bouviers which were great - they pretty much trained themselves and me and taught me most everything I know, plus doing a lot of reading in the days before the internet and KZbin.
@cherylmillard2067Ай бұрын
Bite work is a gradual process, from tug work they graduate to a wedge then to a sleeve, usually they are trained to bite only on the sleeve and only on the bite suit worn by a decoy, they most often bite only on those items. Decoying is a learned art and requires an intense level of athleticism, this prevents unintended bites.

Bahahawa, you gotta keep those dogs busy. My pittie is mostly a couch potato unless she gets the zoomies. I am not a trainer either but neighbors have asked me to train theirs. Teaching your dog is best done when young and takes time and patience and most people have neither. My pittie walks every night off leash. She ain't no guard dog but will alert me to outside issues and her bark and looks scare lots of people, especially Black males in our neighborhood. Go figure. We are on our 4th pittie rescue and they are the best dogs ever even though when we walk I am their guard human.

The only thing I disagree with in this video is having a need to walk his dog on the lead with the prong collar while attached to his waist. Prongs are a wonderful tool, but should only be used while directly attached to the handlers hands. I've had Mal's for over 30yrs and realize different dogs need different techniques, but one as well trained as this one should be able to casually walk with a flat collar. Otherwise he's spot on with his pup.

Should be a requirement to watch this video if you want to own a dog! So many people have horribly trained or untrained dogs. Especially small dogs. People think because they have a small dog they don't need training. I've seen so many cases of the smaller dogs creating HUGE problems in public and setting off larger dog fights. Also PLEASE stop anthropomorphizing your dogs! They are dogs not humans! They need discipline and structure to be healthy members of your family. These things protect you, strangers, and your dog.

Everybody wants a dog, but most everybody is too damn lazy to commit to the responsibility of having a dog of this caliber. This whole MAL owning situation has been sensationalized by the military and police officers and retired military veterans and most of these dogs end up in a kill house or imprisoned in a facility until they die. Furthermore, nobody wants to pay to get trained because they don’t like the idea that the training doesn’t stop with the trainer, it requires them to commit to the animals, well-being at the house, and in public, and taking responsibility for the dog’s actions. Most of you just need a damn poodle….
