Have you been to a meeting where you pretended to understand what you were listening to, and did that, quietly, because you were afraid of being ridiculed? Have you held back your questions because you thought they are bad questions and will, if anything, serve to expose you as an imposter, a swindler of the first degree?

Great video! What I’ve learned is that when you ask questions, people like explaining because people in general like to feel smart

4 days into an Assistant Controller position and I am definitely feeling this imposter syndrome, despite majoring in Accounting and having an MBA. First time at this position and there are days I feel like quiting because the work/duties are overwhelming and I feel as if I should already know everything because "thats ehat I was hired for". It's hard to balance out pretending to know what I am doing and feeling like I am pesting the controller with what I feel like is stuff I should know. I'm going to continue chugging along because I truly love the company and position, but at the moment its just overwhelming learning all the new procedures and what all the job entails.

This is why honesty is important. Lies can create false belief and false expectations and by lying you you can make others feel the imposter syndrome.

So happy I watched this before my first day as an entry level accountant. Its assuring to know that askng questions and behing honest when I don't know something will help in the long run and create a better relationship with my coworkers.

This is really great to hear. I took up an Accounting role (Financial Controller) after a 5year career in audit and its been the most challenging 9monthz of my career. I have battled with self doubt everyday. I've considered even taking another non management role because of the pressure (mostly internal) to perform. I wonder sometimes if it was too much of a leap to FC

I decided I wanted to study accounting in 1975. Over the years, I explored other fields and decided to stay in accounting. However, I didn't take a career in accounting seriously until 10 years ago.. However, I learned very early I didn't like auditing. It takes a special breed of accounting professionals to work as auditors. Auditing is essential, but it is one of the most boring areas of accounting. Unfortunately, i have met auditors who didn't know debits and credits very well. I would explore other areas of accounting. A financial controller job is usually difficult when business owners want to do crazy things and working with folks who don't know basic accounting rules as well as debits and credits.

Thank you very much for this video. I was worked as an accountant for going on 25 years in my home country. But when I’ve moved to the USA a couple of years ago I couldn’t persuade myself that I am valuable because of law level of my English. I couldn't find a job, and my self esteem has taken a blow. I realized that I can't sell myself at all because I was doubting at myself, at my knowledge. I am afraid to look silly or unprofessional. I began my career from scratch, and I know I can do more. Your video really inspired me.

This was such a self confidence boost for me, with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and years of experience now finding employment has been very tough, such that I started doubting my abilities. Thanks for your honest feedback over your experience! Now, I feel like, I am not alone in this path but fortunately there are ways that help with becoming a better version of ourselves.

The timing of this video is a Godsend! I started my career in Corporate and then went into a Government job as a Controller Assistant. I was offered a great opportunity in manufacturing, but have not had exposure in cost accounting which this role will entail. My mentor said it would be a good move for my career. This advice will help me ask questions and avoid pretending what I don't know. Thank you so much!

It's reassuring knowing others feel this way too. I felt in my previous career in retail I knew the job well inside and out, but switching to banking and now schooling for accounting is a little overwhelming at first too. While I am nervous for it all It is exciting to be starting something new and I know with time more knowledge will come!

i've been a silent viewer of some of your videos; this time i appreciate your honesty when sharing your previous experiences in the early days of your career. i agree that it's better to acknowledge that as a person, one surely has limits with regards to what one knows and doesn't know. what's important is that one knows where/what one lacks and should address such accordingly. learning should be part of one's daily living... more success to your endeavors.

My last boss was the company FC and he was really harsh on me. He was discouraging and he often set me up to fail. I was provided a lot of support from the company to learn but I just felt alone and felt that I had to be someone I’m not to survive. Now I’m looking for another role in finance and I can’t help but think that I’m not enough. He would say that he thinks I should go in another field as he doesn’t think that I have the analytical mind for accounting even though this was my first job after uni. I just wanted to add, when you’re at the start of your career the management that you have will often shape your outlook on yourself until you make a decision to change it yourself.

A few years ago when I got my new job it was in a field that was a bit new to me and all around were persons who have been in the industry for years. I kept doubting myself that maybe I really don't belong there and they'll see I might not be good at the job etc.. Just a few months later those thoughts are completely gone.. despite still being 'new' I'm freaking killing it. Y'all wing it. Learn it and be confident..

Thank you so much for sharing, my biggest insecurity is not knowing how to utilize various software programs that accountants use, I been feeling very anxious and a desperate feeling of just not knowing where to go with my journey in accounting, ig it’s okay not to know everything.
@henryp218

I found most recruiters tend to put emphasis on job applicants' experience in using certain software programs. What I've learned thus far in my career, most software is quite similar when it comes to day-to-day accounting tasks. Once you are trained in using 2 accounting software, it's quite easy to transition to using the others. And in this day and age, even the software goes through different upgrades all the time to keep up with industry standards, so please believe that it's normal to not know everything.
