Hi John, I was speaking to someone who shot pots out of Nairn harbour in Scotland. He too had issues with scumbags lifting his pots. He put a laminated note in the last pot that read “Thank you for lifting my pots. What you do not know is that somewhere in the string of pots is a tracker. By the time you have read this note I will have been notified that they have been lifted to the surface, the time they were lifted, and if you have AIS, the person who lifted the pots. I look forward to meeting you at your home port, either with the constabulary or a group of my friends who will be happy to educate you”. It worked even though it was a bluff.
@TheFishLocker2 жыл бұрын
Only 1 in 10 boats has AIS. In fact I don’t know any recreational/leisure small boat owners who have AIS.
@colingrant73552 жыл бұрын
@@TheFishLocker that’s true that recreational boats seldom have AIS. Apple do do a tracker that might work. If nothing else it lets them know that they are being watched and should scare them off. Nuff said. Enjoying the channel .

Mr Grant, thank you this man doesn't deserve this. He has very high individual morales. I just found out his first name from your post, "John." In America we have what we call a town watch, they are community members who volunteer and watch the neighborhood. Maybe you good people could form a coastal pot watch. All it would take is a little organization.

I absolutely loved the way you handled that! The times you spend with little James are very inspiring and the family outings are fun to watch as well. And Spargos kitchen is also a very welcomed spin on your videos. Well the reason I actually started writing this comment was to say that with all your wholesomeness., it's awesome to see you get serious on a matter that deserved it! In the Army we called it wall-to-wall counseling. I'm sure it "happened" in John's Navy service too. Someone ran afoul of the rules and their actions splashed on others, so they were 'encouraged' to mend their way without making it official. It was handled in-house, as it were.

My sister works in conservation, and my family has always been very conservation focused. Watching you diligently take the steps you need to take to protect the native populations is exemplary. I live in Ontario, Canada, and here all our local turtle species are endangered primarily due to invasive species (mostly the Red Eared Slider) that people have released into local waterways. I found a red eared slider in.backyard (which was weird because I am nowhere near any waterway) and contacted a local conservation society on what I should do with it. They suggested I release it in any nearby lake or stream. I tore them a new rectum for that suggestion, i can tell you. Turns out this particular turtle escaped from my neighbor's backyard pond where he personally rescues pet turtles that kids outgrew. Wish I had known that beforehand, but i did eventually find a good place for this turtle to be rehomed

When I was a tad my father's brothers and their families would invite us and we'd all go crabbing on Netarts Bay on the Oregon Coast. They'd plan it out carefully so we would get there just as the tide was turning. We'd set out our pots and everyone would go to the peninsula to set up. My mother and aunts would gather wood for a big bonfire. One of my uncles would set up a driftwood tripod over the fire and hang a pot of sea water so it would come to a boil. There would be potato salad, a jello salad, soda pops, chips and other picnic fare, but the main attractions were the Dungeness crabs. I would go out with the men-folk to watch. They had a special measuring tool that showed what males and females looked like, and a the proper measure for taking. No female crabs could be taken. Only males over a certain size were allowed. We would take only males over the size, and only the limit for each family, even though we would throw many of them back. My father and his brothers showed us kids what integrity was by example. When we returned to our peninsula camp with the crabs my uncle's would proudly show off the crabs before plopping them straight into the boiling water. I remember watching the crabs change color from the greenish brown of the live crabs to the bright red-orange when cooked. My aunts would fish them out, let them cool, and then clean them. I loved looking at the big shells of the backs. And the flavor of them was wonderful.

James...One thing you definitely need is a small winch to pull the pots. I know they have to be heavy because you've got some arms on you and you still struggle. That would kill me and take all the fun out of it. Also, it's so rewarding to see someone with integrity that has the vested interest in the sea and its creatures. I'm not sure how many people would throw back their catch if it was a millimeter or two to small. I think that is evidenced by the thieves who stole your catch. They need a lesson that will teach them the consequences of doing that and I don't mean a fine...something a bit more physical! That's where those big arms would come in handy. My mouth is already watering at the prospect of Jim giving a masterclass in dressing crab with one of those beauties, as well as an alternative way of serving crab butter rather than simply on very fresh baked bread. I would happily kill for both methods but new info is never wasted from your site John. Something tells me Hannah already has one or two in her sights...

Good to see you're still hauling it in over there. I know I just recently saw Alaska canceled it's snow crab harvest this year for the first time after a huge population decline from warming waters, and after previous king crab harvest cancelations too. Not looking so good 😕
@TheFishLocker2 жыл бұрын
I just read that today too. Good that they are being proactive like that.

That’s a shame too hear their numbers are down. Especially for the Alaskan folk where fishing is a way of life for many..

The positives are the filming, the explanations, and the effort you put in to keeping your viewers entertained. The negatives are the thieves that just ruin what you endeavor to bring us. I hope one day you catch up with them. I thought it was tourists but at this time of year I think you must be right in your assumption. Don't let the b******s get you down.

I dread to think what those claws could do. Once, rockpooling at Whitley Bay with the kids I decided to winkle a little shore crab out of a hole by letting it grab my thumb. This worked like a charm, it was about two inches across (if that) and it REALLY HURT.

You need an organised “Pot watch” like Neighbourhood Watch between yourselves to catch the thieves and then some naming, shaming and retribution. I would suggest keelhauling followed by sinking their boat.

Shame about the pots, perhaps a small and cheap GPS tracker in a waterproof box so you can see when they are being lifted. If you make it public that you are doing it hopefully it will be enough of a deterrence.

It wouldn’t stop them and unless they were stolen and I found them in their van it wouldn’t catch anyone.
